4 | Airships (aka Zeppelins, derigibles, blimps, aerostats) | Technically, airships are not VTOL, they still require a patch of runway along with airflow and lift to take off and land, but for the purposes of OpenTTD they are classed like helicopters. Airships use a lighter-than-air gas for lift and then use rotors or jets in to maneuver forward. Airships come in rigid, semi-rigid, non-rigid (blimps), hybrid aereostats (powered balloons), dynastat and rotastat variants. Early models mostly focused on trasnporting passengers and mail with some cargo. World War I and World War II era models were largely used as bombers. Post-WW2 use is mostly for either slow-moving heavy cargo transport or eyecandy advertising, with some potential use as passenger cruiseliners. | ||||
