50which digital skills do you suggest for low level learners to first engage?
Traci Cullins-Clark
Keep it simple and break larger tasks like 'open whatsapp and send a message' into many, many smaller steps. I'd try sending a simple text message to a friend. From getting out your phone to sending the message, there are probably at least 20 smaller steps there!
7
51How have the study circles worked? How has it helped build technology skills?
Deborah Launey
The learning circles have helped practitioners answer simple quesstions about using zoom and other tech while practicing in a group, with a more experienced facilitator to answer questions.
8
52
What advice or ways do you have to help provide a safe space to try ? I agree trying something new is emotional.
Melissa Perry
Great question! I would practice any new tech before you use it with learners, even if it's something that seems fairly simple like using breakout rooms in zoom. I'd also try and find peers facing similar challenges you can talk to, so you feel you are not alone!
9
53Comment: I think that learning circles would help me.
Christine Gertner
Great, we are so glad!
10
54
How did you help students that did not have access to technology such as computer/internet? Did you have funds to assist the student?
Sandra LaRocque
I think that depends a lot on the program. Check out NDIA for the latest on free resources during COVID. https://www.digitalinclusion.org/covid19/
11

How can our field ensure that leaders support this collaborative approach to professional development, so that such activities can be carried out and so participants can then use what they learn back at their programs?
Paul Jurmo
Great question! I think reinforcing that the process of inquiry is just as valuable as positive learner outcomes! Jillian had a great comment that went out with the webinar follow-up to address this as well.
14
58How can we see the questions?
Paula J. Williams
Technical -related to webinar
15
59
Have you found a resource of easy, slow "How To videos" about loging into zoom/ google classrooms/ other platforms for students who don't have English Language skills? Or how to create them?
Deborah Launey
I wish there was more out there like this and I had more suggestions! I'd try breaking things into much smaller steps for your students. gcflearnfree and northstar digital literacy assessment might be good placres to start.
16
63
With technology, It mighht be a good idea to have an idea about what you wantto do, then find out how to do it. Rather than just have a pool of knowledge about new technology and try to find uses for it
Frederick Mitchell
Great comment! I think developing specific, answerable research questions can help with this.
17
67
What level of English did most of your students have? Did those at Beginning Literacy have success?
Deborah Launey
They had a huge range. Check out our Technology Resource Toolkit for more info.

Sounds like you do not have continuous enrollment??? How do other programs handle that. Just keep plowing through some lesson series even though some students had been involved for months and others were new.???
Lissa KleinSome programs do have open enrollment and have ways to manage this.
