The Steelers draft was defined by 3 words - attitude, passion, and leadership.. they did not trade a single time and when they were on the clock, they took guys that fit what they do to a tee.. in the 1st, TJ Watt could have easily been a top 20 pick, but fell into their laps at 30.. no brainer pick, you get a Watt at a position of need and great value - one of the few actual value picks in the 1st.. in the 2nd, they nabbed the youngest player in the draft, USC WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, who plays with such passion and toughness that he's been compared to Anquan Boldin.. he should provide a reliable target opposite Antonio Brown for years to come.. key word being reliable - something the Steelers have been seriously lacking at that position after AB.. in the late 3rd, they got a versatile DB who will work best in the slot, which they desperately needed, then picked the most inspirational player in the draft and local hero RB James Conner, who will provide a great backup to LeVeon Bell and possibly even work at FB to get both on the field at the same time.. in the 4th, they got an ascending dual-threat QB talent out of the SEC that many thought could go in the 2nd or 3rd to develop behind their aging superstar QB on a playoff caliber team.. sound familiar? Hint: it worked out pretty well for a similar player in a similar situation last year.. I'm not saying Dobbs is Dak Prescott, but there are to many similarities to ignore.. in the 5th and 7th, they took high upside developmental guys and in the 6th, they reached a bit to make sure they got the best long snapper in the draft

Being a win-now team coming off of a playoff berth, they paid a steep price to move up for their QB of the future, Deshaun Watson. If he continues to be the leader and winner he was in college, it was worth it, but there are legit concerns about how well his game will translate to the NFL.. they got great fits and value with LB Zach Cunningham in the 2nd and D'Onta Foreman in the 3rd, but didn't address their big OL need until the 4th, where they opted for a small school guy in Julie'n Davenport out of Bucknell who needs a lot of developmental work over a more plug and play guy I really liked in Will Holden or big school developmental guys like Jermaine Eluemunor or Roderick Johnson, who at least have experience against high level talent

Dedicated themselves to the power run game with the additions of Fournette and Cam Robinson in the 1st 2 rounds and battering ram FB Marquez Williams in the 7th.. reached in the 3rd on DE Dawuane Smoot and took a big character risk in the 4th with Dede Westbrook, but got great value on day 3 with LB Blair Brown and DB Jalen Myrick.. perhaps most surprising, passed on every QB, even Dobbs in the 4th to take Westbrook, and decided to pick up the 5th year option on Blake Bortles, worth over $19m

What do you do with two 1st round picks? Make extreme reaches on each, of course.. First, they took Corey Davis, who I valued in the late 1st-early 2nd as my WR #6 at #5 overall, then came back and took Adoree Jackson, who I valued as a mid 2nd rounder, a value that was highly boosted by his kick return ability, at #18.. I do like Davis, but I happen to like guys like Chris Godwin (3rd round pick), Zay Jones (2nd round pick), Curtis Samuel (2nd round pick), and Carlos Henderson (3rd round pick) better, while they spent the #5 overall pick.. if they wanted to add an offensive weapon, they could have taken OJ Howard to make their "exotic smashmouth" even more exotic and smashmouth-ier and I would have had no issue.. with Adoree, I love him with the ball in his hands, but he's a total boom or bust on a play by play basis on defense.. his size is a problem out wide and while he has the athleticism, he lacks the instincts in man coverage.. if you play him inside as nickel and/or in zone, he's a liability as a tackler.. all this leads me to believe he'd be a better WR, which is an area he does have some experience.. He's very Devin Hester-like, who was also tried at CB until the Bears finally realized it's better to just get the ball in his hands.. I liked the Taywan Taylor's value in the 3rd, but not before guys like Chris Godwin, Carlos Henderson, Josh Reynolds, Chris Hansen, ArDarius Stewart, and maybe even Amara Darboh.. Jonnu Smith is a nice player and fit as an eventual replacement for Delanie Walker, but even he was a reach in the 3rd over the huge run of TEs (especially George Kittle) in the 4th and 5th (which they traded their 4th round pick to move up for Taylor.. hindsight's always 20/20, but they conceivable could have drafted OJ Howard at 5 (or as it turned out, even 18 with Lattimore at 5), Gareon Conley/Tre White/Kevin King/Chido Awuzie at 18, Chris Godwin or Carlos Henderson at 72 and Josh Reynolds, Chad Hansen, Amara Darboh, or Ryan Switzer at 100 and filled all the same positions, while getting much better bang for their buck.. they got decent value with ILB Jayon Brown (5th round) and OLB Josh Carraway (7th round) on the 3rd day, but they didn't capitalize on any of the big value guys that slipped through the cracks.. they really missed the boat this year, in my opinion

Got some much needed help for the interior OL, although nothing at OT.. some help for the run defense.. added to the backfield with 1st pick Cook, though he has plenty of concerns to overcome and may not be much better than the guy they already have.. added a couple of weapons out wide, but would only expect one of the two to make the team.. best value is a wildcard in Bucky Hodges, who has elite athleticism and mismatch ability, but is inconsistent and a huge project at TE

Super solid floor with high upside.. now just a matter of finding best fit with rest of DL.. likely early down LDE and slide inside on pass rush downs.. does best work inside against OGs.. could add weight and develop into dominant 3t.. issue with pick is more question of how other players will fit change from 34 to 43 scheme.. all 3 most recent 1st round picks fit best as 5t

the Jaguars obviously committed themselves to the power run game and invested heavily in Fournette, but to me, he's simply not worth the #4 overall pick and becoming one of the highest paid RBs in the NFL before ever taking the field.. could have taken TE OJ Howard instead, along with the same surrounding draft class, to give you a boost in both the run game and the passing game

Mahomes, PatrickQB16'2"225Texas Tech5.84121.2
considering the Chiefs were a playoff team and seemingly in win-now mode, they paid a big price for a guy they don't expect to play immediately, but it could pay huge dividends in a year or two, because Mahomes has elite potential.. perfect situation for him, not being rushed into action, being able to learn behind Alex Smith and under QB guru Andy Reid.. spending next year's 1st rounder to move up tells me they think they're better off taking Mahomes now and having a year to coach him up in their system than waiting for any of the QBs in next year's hyped class.. I tend to agree and strongly believe Mahomes is a lot better than the people who criticize the Texas Tech so-called "back yard" offense or his so-called "reckless" play style give him credit for.. from a value perspective, I had a top 20 grade on him, but that placed him in my overall top 10
no immediate value unless injury.. They do not want to rush him, but extremely high upside once given the opportunity.. Could have similar impact to Roethlisberger/Prescott as rookies if forced into action

explosive splash player, enforcer/tone setter, but reckless, over-aggressive play style with concerning medical (back/neck/shoulder/concussions) and character (drugs, mental stability).. surprised they didn't go with Mixon, considering the extensive work they did on him (Vikings RB coach Kennedy Polamalu was RB coach at UCLA while recruiting him out of HS in CA), and instead opted for a smaller back with similar character concerns and additional medical concerns (3 shoulder surgeries).. might speak to bigger concerns with Mixon.. Cook is a very similar back to who the Vikings already have with Jerrick McKinnon, although with better vision and aggression, but will need to improve his pass protection and ball security in order to get on/stay on the field early
Will immediately be in mix with similar RB Jerrick McKinnon and FA signing Latavius Murray behind poor OL.. May struggle to stay on field because of pass protection and ball security

Good natural cover skills, but was already a bit lacking of elite athleticism and his lack of play strength could lead to being overpowered by bigger NFL receivers.. on top of that, his achilles injury will keep him out for part, if not all of next season and could adversely effect his burst and change of direction in the long term.. many had a 1st round value on him, but I already had my concerns before the injury.. with the injury now, this is a big risk.. I had a final 3rd round grade on him, would have been a late 1st/early 2nd grade without the injury
