I know neither personally except through emails over the years. Jacob runs the planetarium in Ghana and from all accounts he is doing an excellent job. I like Jamal’s ideas, his critical and careful response to emails and obvious commitment. Also I like the idea of a French speaking President for our second President after the first, who is English speaking.

3/19/2019 0:36:22Baratoux DavidResearch Institute for Sustainable DevelopmentSenior ScientistMaram KAIRE, early career preferenceMinistry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of SenegalSenegalI believe that Maram KAIRE will be the best choice for a representation of the french-speaking West African in the Executive Committee. Though Maram KAIRE is not working directly in the academic world, he has an outstanding record of activities in the domain of public outreach of astronomy in West Africa. He has also pushed for several years a project for an astronomical observatory in Senegal, and this project will be achieved in 2019. Maram Kaire has an obvious leadership - he is simply "the face of astronomy and popularization of science" in Senegal. He his also a hard-working person, and an example for many of his colleagues and for the young generation in Senegal. I know that he must be with the minister on the days of the conference, and he deeply regrets that he will not be able to attend the conference in Cape town.

3/18/2019 17:38:38Baratoux DavidResearch Institute for Sustainable DevelopmentSenior ScientistMeriem El Yajouri Observatory of ParisFrance Meriem is one of the faces of the new generation of african astronomers. She recently graduated and has now a position (non permanent) at the Observatory in Paris. She led recently the Space Bus operation in Morocco. She is also one of the active committee members of the Africa Initiative for Planetary and Space Sciences.
She is willing to find an academic position in Africa to support the development of African Astronomy. She will certainly have to pursue her career abroad for a certain period of time, but I wish that the will be offered an academic position in Africa. I think that African Astronomy definitively needs scientific personalities like Meriem, and if there is a seat for young scientist in the executive committee, I see Meriem as one of the most promising candidates.
