QuestionAnswer

We use TABE. Do you have correlations for the 11/12 test? A: We don't have direct correlations to other publishers, we all correlate to NRS levels, and have several charts that relate CASAS and publishers to the NRS levels here: https://www.casas.org/training-and-support/wioa-and-nrs-compliance/scale-scores-nrs-efls-and-grade-levels
5
IS CASA Reading test available online and if so, how is validity ensured to make sure that the actual student is taking the test? A: We just completed Webinars on our plan for piloting remote pre- and post-testing. More information here: https://www.casas.org/social-media-newsroom/webinars
6
Can I access topspro information from a future student in a different state that is interested in taking an ESOL online class in another state? A: Sorry this one really depends upon the details. My suggestion is to contact CASAS Tech Support while you are managing this data and relay the specifics while you are on the computer.
7
Where is the information regarding how to report students who cannot participate due to the current situation? The policy is in OCTAE memo 20-3 that we referenced during the training. In our software, TOPSpro Enterprise (TE) programmed this feature on April 15th, and the check box is in the Students - In Program Years lister. I'm sure other data systems have programmed this, but for the exact location you'll need to check in with your specific system.
8
What is the best way for us to learn what the state decides about DL test proctoring? We are not a grantee and are not included in the updates that are shared with grantees in Texas. A: my best suggestion would be for you to contact your Texas state Department of Labor. (Based on my California understanding that it is the DOL not the Dept of Education that runs this in Texas!)
9
Often you won't know until the end of the year that they have 50%+ hours in DL. So do you just change the designation at the end of the year? A: Yes
10
So the 50% is calculated for the entire semester/class length? A: Yes
11
Are we marking the STUDENT or the CLASS as distance learning? A: In our TE system, you have the ability to do either one. Not sure how this is done in other systems.
12
For "pick up where you left off": Is it necessary that live online classes specifically take place at the usual time? A: No. This represents the most common example of this approach, but is not required.
13
If instructors are using Zoom, which is virtually face-to-face. Is it still considered Distance Learning? A: yes
14
If instruction is offered remotely but synchronously, is this considered distance learning. I think the presenter addressed this through the definition but I am not sure. [13]
15
If PDE-approved distance learning software programs (e.g., Burlington English, Newsela, USALearns) were assigned and the learners completed those assignments when they are available to do it (i.e., not at a "live" class time), would that be considered Distance Learning? A: yes
16
Really afraid of distance testing, they copy each other when they are on the room, how to avoid cheating? A: OCTAE has left this decision to each state, knowing that some will like the remote testing approach and others will not.
17
In doing online testing with the G Suite tests they use incognito and record the person taking the test. Would this be possible with having to do pre and post testing for progression for NRS rates? But then how do we do this when all they have is cell phones? ...with clock hours? A: Sorry not sure exactly what this question is asking.
18
I'm using a little of each of the three models - so what you're saying is I can give attendance as a blend of these but tell the state which one we used the most? A: it is fine to use all three models, but ideally you should document your approach to each model in your Local Assessment Policy.
19
Learner Mastery is similar to Badges System? A: I'm not sure exactly how the "Badges System" works, sorry.
20
How do we record non-software homework that is assigned to students? A: My suggestion would be to use Learner Mastery and determine ahead of time how many hours each assignment entails and document that in your Local Assessment Policy.
21
Do you see the possiblity of using camera technology to identify and insure that actual student in watching videos or taking classes and exams? Is "virtual check in" by camera verification a possiblity now? A: We have looked at some of these suggestions in our CASAS remote testing. https://www.casas.org/social-media-newsroom/webinars
22
Do assignments turned in also earn DL hours through Learner Master process? A: Not automatically, but you can certainly establishe that as an option by using the process we discussed.
23
Don't the software programs have internal hour calculations that are approved by the states? A: Some software systems do, but not all. In our state we allow either one, so we have guidelines for when it does and other guidelines for when it doesn't.
24
Can the software programs provide assistance in creating Learner Mastery hours? A: I can't speak for all programs, but my suggestion would definitely be to contact them. Most are really good at providing this sort of assistance.
25
Do we round up to the quarter-hour or half-hour for Teacher Verification model? A: This really depends on your state's policy.
26
If you have to track time, and you want to use the learner mastery model, do you give the students the different times? You said one takes 5 hours and one takes 1 hour. A: This was just an example. The idea behind learner mastery is that you determine one time amount for each unit or module and record that same time for all students equally.
27
What do we do for standard Pre/ Post DL testing in the future? A: At CASAS we are piloting the use of pre/post-testing remotely. https://www.casas.org/social-media-newsroom/webinars
28
What doe ESL programs do who have used BEST Literacy test which cannot be done virtually? A: My suggestion is to check in with your state officials and/or the representative at BEST.
29
DOES THIS DO AWAY WITH "TESTER" POSITIONS? A: For CASAS definitely not! For other tests I am not sure.
30
Are there some good webinars on test security & proctoring DL testing? A: Here is some information from CASAS http://training.casas.org/
31
From Kalliope Vitakis: Are teachers going to be able to assign a TABE test for LCP's ? Maybe use a web cab for cheating. A: for this you should contact your state representative.
32
What about funding laptop distribution for adult ed? A: This answer depends upon your state.
33
Alejandra Juarez, we are using Zoom in our Adult Ed, part of the Wallingford school district, and it definetly serves as distance learning and so does BurlingtonEnglish for my ESL students.A: Great
34
Some ELL students are in the poverty level. Some do not have couputers. They were given homework packets. How do you determine the hours they have workek? A: From the presentation you have a few options, my suggestion is to use Learner Mastery following the general steps addressed in the presentation.
35
Can you share more on your ALTERNATIVE assessments for EL Civics? A: For starters, here is the link to our EL civics Website: https://www.casas.org/training-and-support/casas-peer-communities/california-adult-education-accountability-and-assessment/california-el-civics/california-civic-participation
36
Can you send out what you're using for the EL Civics assessments? [35]
