Different geographical location introduce different contamination in to sea-water through natural or manmade sources. One needs to quantify these before any concrete cleaning steps needs to be performed. Aim of this project to collect water from various beaches and quantify the impurity and level. Finally sutable mechanism needs to be identified for purification of this water.

Over the Academic Year 2015-16, two TDSL teams have contributed to the development of the village of Koregaon near Satara, based on a nearby village named Kapshi. This TDSL effort intends to continue that endeavour.
To study the activities already undertaken, to contribute to them in ways feasible and to work out a plan for the future.

It is a very important and common requirement to measure the height of infants and children to monitor their growth as per growth charts which helps monitor if they are receiving right nutrition. Providing right kind of nutrition to infants and children is not only important for their physical growth but it is proven that it also determines the growth of the brain. Lack of nutrition at early age can make the children prone to infections and chronic diseases life long. It is thus important to monitor their growth. Tools for reliable measuring of height can be expensive and thus not available very commonly. An App which could measure height of infants and children reliably is a need which may be potentially use to health care workers and organizations in the domain.

Build web based tool (or a website) to connect people willing to write post cards to children through NGOs, schools, individuals in rural areas or disadvantaged sections of the society to promote writing skills among disadvantaged children who do not have any access to electronic communication or will not access any means of electronic communication.
Objective: To promote expression and writing skills among disadvantaged children either in their native language or in English
Deliverable: A web based tool to connect people from anywhere in the country willing to write a few post cards a month in one of the Indian languages or in English to disadvantaged children anywhere in the country.

This is in continuation to a project topic floated earlier. The project will involve continuation of development of a mobile based App for malnutrition. As is well known Malnutrition is a serious issue in our country and many children either die at a early age due to problems associated with malnutrition or suffer their whole due to poor brain development leading to poor comprehension skills, lack of immunity and suffering from chronic diseases.
Objective: To develop a tool to make mothers and others in the family regarding the importance of nutrition for infants and children particularly from the time they are born to 2 years of age. Also, awareness of importance of mother's nutrition from the time of conception to at least until the child is being breastfed (upto 2 years of age).
Deliverable: An App which provides guidance to mothers and other family members chronologically regarding nutrition for mother and child from the time when a woman conceives until the child is two years age. The App also helps to keep track of the growth chart of the infant/child as per WHO norms.

Development of web based tools to promote participation of average citizens to contribute towards various social causes.
There are a large number of individuals and organizations that are doing extremely good work in addressing various social issues in the country. The general public remains largely unaware of such efforts as it never gets attention from the popular media. There needs to be some effort towards making the masses aware about the excellent efforts made by certain individuals who are otherwise no different than the rest and also by organizations which are doing work for the benefit of the underprivileged in the country. Knowledge of such efforts and suggestion of ways in which any citizen can contribute whether from their homes or otherwise can potentially scale up the efforts. The proposed work is aimed at building web based tools (website) for addressing the above.
Objectives: To make general public aware of the excellent work done by individuals and organizations in making a difference to the lives of others. Suggest ways and means by which an average citizen could also contribute to make a difference in lives of the disadvantaged.
Deliverable: Web based tools (website) to fulfill the above objectives with a design which makes keeping it updated reasonably simple.

Wadgaon Sinnar is a village in Sinnar taluka, Nashik district. The village is in the ground water overexploited zone as classified by the state ground water authority. Parts of the village face drinking water scarcity during summer. At the same time some part of the village grows water intensive horticulture crops. The objective of the project is to conduct a water balance for the village to analyse if the cropping pattern is appropriate for the available water resources of the village.
This project builds on past work done by another TDSL team last semester. The objective is to conduct a water balance for the village. For this, we need to estimate the water demand (farming+domestic) and water supply (canal water, river water, groundwater). The methodology will be farmer surveys (to estimate demand) and field measurements for supply estimation.

|24/07/2016 12:15:38||Necessity and Evaluation of the soil moisture system (developed by IITB students)|
A soil moisture system which can measure 4 parameters: soil moisture, soil temperature, ambient humidity and ambient temperature. We have two versions of this product. One is a low cost version which can give you just soil moisture is a hand held system. A farmer in the field can insert it and get the info about soil moisture. depending on that he can irrigate the field. The other version is a high end version which measures 4 parameters and can send the data on a mobile phone. This version remain deployed in the field.
The objectives of the project is to deploy this system in field. Take the readings. Compare with the commercial version. Educate the farmer regarding this. Interact with the farmers. Take the feedback from the farmers so that system can be improvised based on their feedback. Explore if the system can be integrated with their drip irrigation system. Analyse the saving in water, if this system is used to have a controlled irrigation. At the end of the course, we expect a comprehensive case study report which can help us in improving and making it more user friendly for our farmers.

|25/07/2016 11:44:14||Exploring surge currents on agricultural feeders for capacitor installation for power factor improvement|
Agricultural feeders show very poor power factor due to inductive motors which lead to line losses and higher loads than required. The entire system can show higher efficiency and lower maintenance and breakdowns through the use of capacitors. The lifetime of the capacitors is an important factor in determining the cost benefits of this intervention. Surge currents and voltage are two factors that affect the lifetime of capacitors. This project requires an exploration of this aspect.
The project will require measurements in the field, exploration of capacitors and their cost and specifications available in the market. It will also require developing an understanding of surge currents in induction motors and their magnitude and time constants through textbook study.

Traditionally, crop yield has been the main focus of agricultural policies and technological interventions. For designing appropriate agricultural interventions, a holistic set of indicators accounting for the long-term environmental impacts and socio-economic sustainability of farmers is needed. A qualitative multiple choice questionnaire has been developed for assessing the farm sustainability using a set of indicators that were selected based on systems framework. This TDSL work will be a pilot test for the methodology designed while it will parallely help in assessing the sustainability of the cropping practice being followed in a village. This will be done in a village in Sinnar taluka, Nashik district. The village has a diverse cropping pattern including cereals, oilseeds, onions and vegetables. The students will use the survey form to conduct farmer surveys and use the tool/methodology developed to analyse the survey results.
The objective is to assess the sustainability of farming practices being followed by farmers in the village. A secondary objective is to evaluate the suitability of the survey-questionnaire that has been developed for this purpose. The deliverables will be a) Relative scores on farm sustainability for different crops and farms and b) feedback on how to improve the survey questionnaire/tool for future use.
