1Make your own editable copy of this document, either from "Download" or "Make a copy" under "File.

2For all taxon names, please be aware that the name must exactly match what is in iNaturalist. Subspecies must be listed as trinomials without any extra letters or punctuation or they will not match.

For common names, please start with the most common taxa that are most important for helping establish a community in your language and/or place. Common names of less commonly encountered organisms can be added later by the community as it grows.

If you are adding names are specific to a place and not a lexicon, e.g. English names that are only used in Canada, not the US or the UK, please include the URL of the place in question when submitting this file.

***Make a separate file for each source of common names.*** Each file of common names must come with a citation, preferrably one with a URL that we can use to spot check some of the names. We will not batch import names without sources. Each file should only include names from a single source.

Common name lexicons should match existing ones on iNaturalist, i.e. an English, capitalized name of the language. For example, if the row contains a Japanese name, the lexicon should be "Japanese," not "ja" or "japanese" or "日本語"

Note: iNaturalist will only do bulk imports of names if there are at least 50 entries. If there are fewer than 50, please do them manually (or work with a curator to do so).
