Blank cells indicate that values are not applicable and/or data required to produce local estimates were unavailable.

Any estimated food insecurity rates of 0% should not be interpreted literally (e.g., 0% among white, non-Hispanic persons in the District of Columbia in 2020)

Notes on Estimates of Food Insecurity by Race and Ethnicity
11
For the first time, as part of the 2022 release, Map the Meal Gap includes food insecurity estimates by race and ethnicity for some groups: people who identify as Black, Latino or Hispanic, and white non-Hispanic in the federal data used in the study. We have included these estimates as additional input into understanding the ways structural racism and policy intersect with food insecurity in the US., as we believe developing effective strategies to reach people at risk of hunger requires access to data that reflect the experiences of specific populations. The following limitations apply:

Due to constraints with the available federal data, these estimates use the race/ethnicity of the household respondent as a proxy for the race/ethnicity of all members of the household. This may result in over- or underestimates of food insecurity in some cases.

While all local estimates within the Map the Meal Gap study are approximations, it should be noted that the estimates for specific race or ethnicity groups are less certain than the overall population level estimates due to smaller sample sizes. We recommend considering these estimates in conjunction with other local quantitative and qualitative data as well as insights from the individuals who live in these communities.

At this time, results are not available for individuals who identify as Asian, Native American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, or multiple races. Currently, sample sizes in the Current Population Survey are too small or the required data are unavailable to allow us to generate reliable estimates for these populations. To address these gaps, federal and state surveys must invest in adequately sampling and collecting food insecurity data that can be disaggregated in meaningful ways.

With the data currently available, Feeding America has conducted additional analysis at the national level for some of these groups, which can be found in the full report here: https://www.feedingamerica.org/research/map-the-meal-gap/overall-executive-summary
