In the LIT program, teens run the dining hall, shadow adult staff members, and participate in workshops including: communication, conflict resolution, money management, resume writing, interviewing, and youth development.
Being a role model to younger campers at a camp I grew up going to has been a huge honor for me. The work we is helpful to others because it makes it so that staff have the support they need to thrive and so that the dinning hall runs smoothly during meal times and that camp is just a better place.
From this I have learned more about my self as a leader and my love for helping others. It has also brought me out of my shell over the years.

Our advisory helped out the community of Mountain Lake by cutting and getting rid of weeds that not only hurt the local plants, but ruined the ascetic view of the walk way. We had been responsible for being safe with the scissors and also making sure that we put every scrap of the weeds out of Mountain Lake (The ones we cut down).
This has been helpful for others in the community because it allowed the people who love to walk around Mountain Lake, to see the beautiful park that they want to visit. It moved out the disgusting weeds that grew out towards the walk way, which blocked a lot of the paths and made it difficult for bikers to ride. Also it made the area a place where people can relax or even eat the delicious black berries in the park.
I gained the experience to pull out weeds, not only the just pull it out, but the proper technique to stop it from growing permanently. Also I learned the importance of patience because when you are doing a difficult job you need tobe patient so you can do it.

6 of my volunteer hours was for being an assistant teacher in group piano lessons. I helped the students in the group lessons learn new skills and songs, and practice their songs and music theory.
The other 5 of my volunteer hours was for volunteering in the secretary’s office as an administrative assistant. I helped take inventory of music books, I helped make the program for the recitals, I took phone calls and answered emails to help families reschedule their lessons or sent out notices for the organization.
What I have done was very helpful because in the group lessons I helped the students practice their music and theory so that more students could get the help and support they needed. In the office I helped the organization take care of administrative tasks that they needed help with to be able to effectively run the organization.
I learned a lot of new skills about how to teach kids new skills better and how to beat provide support to them. I also got practice in administrative duties such as taking phone calls and taking inventory.

My volunteer duties and responsibilities were to educate families that attended the SFUSD school fair about Gateway High School and to answer any questions they had about Gateway High School.
What I have done has been helpful to others because it has helped families learn about different high school options so that they can make what they feel is the best decision about where to attend high school.
From my service experience I have strengthened my ability to teach people about a topic I know a lot about and I have been able to practice assisting people and trying my best to answer their questions.
