| Donald Trump | President | Rep. | According to his website: “President Donald J. Trump fought tirelessly to expand charter schools and school choice for America’s children. He secured permanent funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and protected free speech on college campuses.President Trump will cut federal funding for any school or program pushing Critical Race Theory or gender ideology on our children. His administration will open Civil Rights investigations into any school district that has engaged in race-based discrimination. President Trump will veto the sinister effort to weaponize civics education, keep men out of women’s sports, and create a credentialing body to certify teachers who embrace patriotic values. President Trump will reward states and school districts that abolish teacher tenure for grades K-12 and adopt Merit Pay, cut the number of school administrators, adopt a Parental Bill of Rights, and implement the direct election of school principals by the parents.” According to NPR:Trump, in an interview on X, told Elon Musk that, if elected, “I want to close up the Department of Education, move education back to the states.” First, he’s calling for universal school choice. This would, in theory, take public dollars normally spent on a child’s public education and give them directly to parents to spend at whatever school they want, whether it’s public, private or homeschooling at the kitchen table. He has also called for a Parental Bill of Rights and for school principals to be hired — and fired — by parents. “If any principal is not getting the job done, the parents should be able to vote to fire them and select someone who will. This will be the ultimate form of local control,” Trump said in July. Trump has been an unabashed champion of efforts to limit how schools approach issues of race and gender. In 2020, he created the 1776 Commission, which lamented that “many students are now taught in school to hate their own country, and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes, but rather villains.”
| Kamala Harris | President | Dem. | Campaign website says she will strengthen public education, but does not specify how. According to NPR: Harris didn’t talk much about education in her DNC speech, but she did parry Trump’s plan: “We are not going to let him eliminate the Department of Education that funds our public schools.” In April, the Biden-Harris administration expanded protections against sex discrimination in schools to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Meaning, among other things, it believes students should be allowed to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. Democrats, on the other hand, made clear in their 2024 platform that they’re against any effort that could weaken the nation’s public schools. “We oppose the use of private-school vouchers, tuition tax credits, opportunity scholarships, and other schemes that divert taxpayer-funded resources away from public education. Public tax dollars should never be used to discriminate.” As part of her presidential bid in 2019, Harris proposed a $300 billion plan to raise teacher pay. Though she has not revived the plan, she did tell the AFT, “God knows we don’t pay you enough.”
| Charles “Chuck” Edwards | Senate | Rep. | That’s why in the NC Senate, I’ve fought for more school choice and more transparency by school boards. They should be made up of parents, not bureaucrats. School choice is about empowering parents to decide how and when their children receive their education, regardless of background or ZIP code. Parents also deserve to know what their children are being taught. In the NC Senate, I've stood against the Democrats forcing mandates, school closures and the teaching of radical Critical Race Theory on our children.
| Caleb Rudlow | House Rep. | Dem. | Support public education with additional federal funding. Ensure the US meets its commitments to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 in accordance with the Paris Agreement. Protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and push back against discrimination in all its forms.. Sponsored NC H1057 to provide a pilot program to develop a new school performance grade metric and method. Sponsored NC H1011 to require at least one school nurse in every public school and to appropriate additional funds to meet that requirement. Sponsored NC H960 "Sound Basic Education for Every Child", proposes a wide range of measures to improve North Carolina's public education system
| Mark Keith Robinson | Governor | Rep. | Wants to increase teacher pay, provide educational options and opportunities, and advocate for career technical education.(this was all that was on his website so I looked at other sources) F.A.C.T.S. Task Force: parents, teachers, and students can submit concerns of indoctrination and political bias in public school classrooms to an advisory board to determine the urgency with which it should be addressed. Focus solely on “reading, writing and math” from grades one to five and not teach things like social studies, science, and other issues. Emphasizes parental choice in education. Wants to staff public schools with talent so they can perform for students, but believes “If those public schools are not doing the job for our students and people want to go elsewhere that should be their right.’
| Michael Raymond Ross | Governor | Lib. | Wants to eliminate any state interest or bureaucracy regarding what teachers are forced to teach and empower parents to make these decisions as they determine the course for their child’s learning. Replace current monopoly on education with a 100% equitable distribution of all education money among the students. Lottery money will no longer be an offset of the budget. It will be distributed on a per-student basis to all schools, home schools, micro-schools, or any new free market solutions that meet competency requirements by grade. Schools may choose their own curriculum and parents may choose whatever solutions works best for their children
| Joshua Harold Stein | Governor | Dem. | Endorsed by the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) . Work together to bolster public education from pre-kindergarten through community college and university. By increasing access to high-quality early childhood education, kids will start kindergarten healthy and ready to learn. Raise teacher pay to at least the national average to recruit and keep the best teachers; and also invest in other critical school staff, including counselors, nurses, social workers, and bus drivers. Invest in universal, healthy school meals for all public-school students. Make our community college’s tuition free for students training in our state’s growing, high-demand industries.
| Michael Wayne Turner | Governor | Green | End spending money on school resource officers, in favor of spending money on resources such as school nurses and counselors, art and music instruction, and teacher aides. Oppose the passage of HB715, which proposes to end tenure in the UNC system. Oppose the passage of HB 96 (NC REACH Act), which would require a three-credit-hour class in American history or American government to graduate with a baccalaureate degree for all UNC System students. Support the complete funding of public schools in accord with the intent of court rulings in Leandro v. North Carolina Public Schools. Oppose and work to defund and abolish the new School of Civic Life and Leadership at UNC.
| Rachel Hunt | Lt.. Governor | Dem. | Supporting North Carolina’s public schools is a part of my DNA. My Grandmother and Mother were proud public school teachers who understood the difference a good teacher makes. My Dad was the Education Governor who led the charge for Smart Start and Raising Teacher Pay to the National Average. When Republicans go after public education in this state, especially in our rural communities, I fight back. As a State Senator, I’ve voted against their attempts to bankrupt our public schools and send our taxpayer dollars to unproven and unaccountable private schools. I’ll do the same as Lt. Governor. Sponsored NC S818 to reinstate education-based salary supplements for teachers. Sponsored NC S819 to enact provisions related to improving the number and quality of school psychologists. Sponsored NC S895 “Parents’ and students’ bill of rights”: The Parents' Bill of Rights grants parents the right to access their child's education records, make healthcare decisions, review school performance data, know about threats to their child's safety, and ensure their child receives appropriate educational services. The Students' Bill of Rights guarantees students a learning environment free from discrimination, access to extracurricular activities and college/career readiness resources, adequate nutrition and mental health services, and representation in school decision-making processes. The bill also appropriates $50,000 for the Department of Public Instruction to conduct a public awareness campaign about these new rights. Sponsored NC S814 to require at least one school nurse in every public school and to appropriate additional funds to meet that requirement.
| Shannon Wilson Bray | Lt. Governor | Lib. | When asked if what he would do to strengthen public schools he emphasized that the government should be removed from education and he believes in school choice. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/election/voter-guide/article285052517.html
| Jeffrey Neale Jackson | Attorney General | Dem. | Supports more funding for schools and teacher pay raise. Sponsored legislation to increase early childhood education funding and eliminate Pre-K waitlist. Sponsored legislation to invest in Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Sponsored legislation to expand broadband and technical assistance for rural students and teachers.
| James Daniel Bishop | Attorney General | Rep. | Excerpt: "Under our State Constitution, the responsibility to provide 'for a general and uniform system of free public schools' is divided between state and local government. This is an important sharing, as it allows for meaningful local control over public education. The main responsibility to provide uniformly adequate teacher pay, however, belongs to the General Assembly."
| Maurice “Mo” Green | Superintendent of Public Instruction | Dem. | https://www.mogreenfornc.com/_files/ugd/b57b3e_b4caafbe352c4c7097b151dcefbe8ea8.pdf On Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Critical Race Theory, key issues in the race, Green said, "Educators know how important it is to understand, appreciate and embrace our diverse students and provide them with differentiated resources that meet their needs..." I am concerned about the direction of the NC public school system. It needs a champion who will provide a new vision. Given my experiences, which have included being school district superintendent, a foundation chief executive, a school board attorney, and a member of numerous boards that deal with educational issues, I believe I can be that champion. My vision for the NC public school system is for it to be recognized as an excellent school system. That vision centers around preparing each student for whatever is next for them once they graduate from high school. My vision also includes character development, as I believe in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: “intelligence, plus character, that is the goal of true education.” My vision of excellence for the NC public school system can be realized through commitments by a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g., General Assembly, State Board of Education, local boards of educations, educators, Governor, parents, faith community, businesses, etc.) to the following pillars: ● Investing fully in public education ● Revering educators (teachers as well as other educators such as custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, counselors, etc.) and paying them more ● Providing appropriate and differentiated resources for each student according to their needs ● Enhancing parent and community engagement ● Ensuring safe and secure learning environments ● Celebrating the good in public education. The vision to be excellent is core to how I work. When I was superintendent of Guilford County Schools, I worked with others to set a vision of education excellence (the successful coupling of academic achievement and character development) for the district. While GCS certainly has room for continued improvement, it is through the work of many that the district and its schools have been routinely recognized for its excellence and for being among the best in the state and nationally in academic achievement, character development and the arts.
| Michelle Morrow | Superintendent of Public Instruction | Rep. | She was a representative for Liberty First Grassroots, a conservative political action committee, and legislative liaison at Pavement Education Project, which says it "offers parents and citizens an opportunity to see what books are available in NC Schools." Morrow did not send her children to a NC public school and defended her experience as a homeschool teacher and said she would work "to eliminate progressive indoctrination in schools." On Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Critical Race Theory, key issues in the race, Morrow said, "The only diversity and equity our schools should be promoting is diversity of ideas and teaching methods and equity of opportunity." Critical Race Theory CRT• Leader of state-wide groups that exposed and defeated CRT in schools. • Speaker at school board meetings opposing CRT & porn in schools • Worked w/ lawmakers to write bills. Parental Rights • Led statewide petition needed to get lawmakers to draft bill • Lobbied the public for 2 years to convince lawmakers to pass NC Parental Rights Act. School Safety • Supports school officers over social workers to fight crime • Will enact fair, commonsense discipline policies • Background checks for all school staff. 22 | Paul Benjamin | Buncombe County Board of Commissioners | Rep. | Teaches pastors and preaches across the country but is not affiliated with a local church. Conservative Christian Author. The County Commissioners should be lowering the tax burden for our families. The more we tax our families, the more demanding moms and dads have to work to take care of their children. This adds to the Mental Health crisis we see in families and children in our school system. I want to lower the tax rate and burden on our citizens. Bruce is concerned about the environment, the rise in crime, the high cost of living, and maintaining the quality of life we all want to enjoy. Top issues include infrastructure, public safety, environment, controlling development, and affordable living. He says this about education: Bruce will work to see that our schools teach the basics: reading, writing, math, science, and history. Further, he believes children need to be schooled in practical tasks like understanding debt, interest, budgeting, establishing and using credit, civics, and career development. He believes in mandatory testing and performance-based grade-level promotions. Teachers need to have the ability to control their classrooms and prevent the chaos of a few from disrupting the educational experience of the many. Measured discipline in schools must be brought back. Additional SROs in schools would be a first step. | bruce@bruceoconnell.com
