The challenge is for those long-term residents who really resist "big" business to invade the town. Central Oregon growth will NOT miss La Pine and it will increase the local economy and attraction of new residents.La Pine still has a stigma about being "less" than Bend. However, the Bend-La Pine School District has significantly improved the local facilities and provided equitable staffing and programs for the youth of the town. A year round swimming pool and a truly good steak/hamburger - nothing that comes here hits the mark and that's why they can't stay in business. We REALLY don't want to see national chains like Starbucks and Walgreens here. We are kind of stunned that the City would allow that when there are already good local businesses meeting that need, and in the process allow the destruction of our few remaining historic buildings. We like the idea of requiring new buildings to incorporate a lodge style theme but it needs to not be heavy handed with the small businesses trying to survive.Drug use and dogs continually running free or lost.
