Why is it so hard to tell the truth?

Lens: Confession and Repentance

Conor has made his confession: he wants his mother to go.
-- He still loves her, though - contradiction
-- -- "Humans are complicated beasts"
-- The Monster helps him understand this
-- -- Using three stories / parables to soften his heart

Now Conor has to repent by telling the truth

SFX: You Would Rather Die

From Maria's Farm Country Kitchen:
How to Tell the Truth in 7 Not-So-Easy Steps

http://www.mariasfarmcountrykitchen.com/how-to-tell-the-truth-in-7-not-so-easy-steps/

"7. Be honest with yourself first. Spend some time really trying to understand why you have lied. Think about how it might have felt to be the other person. Try to really figure out what you want from your own life. Be ruthlessly truthful about what that is. Don’t worry about what other people might think. As “good” a person as you think you might be, if you don’t live your own truth, then your whole life might be a lie, right?"

Conor O'Malley had to be honest with himself (via confession) first in order to repent.

James 5:16 NLT
James 5:16a NLT
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
SFX: You Would Rather Die
1:27:34 - 1:27:47
So what do I do? | What you did just now. Speak the truth. | That's all? | You think it's easy? You were willing to die rather than speak it.

mhI did not come to heal her; I came to heal you.

SOUND BITE 1: I will visit you again on further nights, Connor O’Malley, and I will shake your walls until you wake. And then I will tell you three stories. | You’re going to tell me stories! | I am. I will tell you three stories. And when I finish my stories you will tell me a fourth.

SOUND BITE 2: I’ve come to tell you the second tale. | Is it as bad as the last one? | It ends with proper destruction, if that’s what you mean. It’s about a man who thought only of himself: a man who wasn’t as generous as he should have been: a man who gets punished very badly indeed. | Stories aren’t real, though. They don’t help anything. | Stories are wild creatures, Connor O'Malley. When you let them loose who knows what havoc they may wreak.

SOUND BITE 3: I want to know what’s going to happen with my mum! | Waste the precious time that is given you. | Wait! Where are you going? If you’re a tree of healing then I need you to heal. | And so I shall.

SOUND BITE 4: When I called you it was to save her. It was to heal her! | I did not come to heal her. | Yes you did! | I came to heal you. | Me! I’m the one who needs healing? How many times do I have to tell you! My mum’s the one who… ARRRGGGHH!! Help me. | It is time for the fourth tale.

Connor’s heart is now soft, good soil (Matt. 13:8, 23)

NET Notes: [P]arables both conceal or reveal depending on whether one is open to hearing what they teach.

In the end it is not important what you think. It is important what you do.
Matthew 13:13-17 NASB
Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,
‘ You will keep on hearing, but will not understand;
You will keep on seeing, but will not perceive;
For the heart of this people has become dull,
With their ears they scarcely hear,
And they have closed their eyes,
Otherwise they would see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart and return,
And I would heal them.’
But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

Daniel 12:8-10 NASB
As for me, I heard but could not understand; so I said, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these events?” He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for these words are concealed and sealed up until the end time. Many will be purged, purified and refined, but the wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but those who have insight will understand.

Matthew 13:34-35 NASB
All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
“I will open My mouth in parables;
I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

KEY TEXT(S)

Matthew 13:15 NASB
For the heart of this people has become dull,
With their ears they scarcely hear,
And they have closed their eyes,
Otherwise they would see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart and return,
And I would heal them.’

Romans 10:10 NRSV
For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.

PS Philip Comment on MANCHESTER BY THE SEA: Feed My Sheep | FCC 141Hey guys, this was right up there with CALVARY as one of the most intense films you've covered. You guys did a great job pulling Christian themes out of it. One thing that keeps coming to mind for me is Jesus at the cross, telling John to look after his mother. I think there's a stigma around estate planning, rooted in superstition to some degree. I suspect some people think preparing for our eventual death is somehow inviting it. But a very practical and fundamental part of loving our family is taking steps to see that they are taken care of in the event of our death. So, if you don't have a will, term life insurance, or guardians designated for your children, perhaps this film is a good motivator to take some of those steps.

Thanks for the show guys! #muhweeladgimli
