Popular music streaming services in Ukraine at 12'22

The research analyzed the musical preferences of Ukrainians for the period from 01.08.2022 to 30.01.2023.

Based on the average values of traffic on web sources and app downloads, we calculated the popularity rating of streaming platforms.

As of June 2022, the most popular platforms for listening to music in Ukraine were:
- Youtube Music;
- Spotify;
- Apple Music;
- Deezer;
- Shazam.

As of January 30, 2023, Youtube Music and Spotify are the most popular in terms of web traffic with 7.12m and 2.91m visits by Ukrainian users, respectively. Among music apps, Ukrainians prefer Spotify, Shazam, and Youtube Music with 144k, 104.2k, and 63.6k downloads, respectively.

By country of origin, more than 50% of the top 100 songs chart is represented by Ukrainian songs on Youtube Music, Deezer, and Apple Music. The largest percentage of Russian songs in the Apple Music and Spotify charts is 21% and 18%, respectively. The majority of Russian artists are in the phonk and rap genres, which are mostly popular among teenagers. The smallest percentage of Russian songs is on Deezer (2%).
Belarusian artists and those Ukrainian artists who moved to Russia and lived and worked in the territory of the aggressor country at the time of the invasion were included in a separate group. The largest percentage of songs by such artists is on the Youtube Music platform.
Compared to August 2022, the number of Russian artists decreased significantly in January 2023 on Spotify (from 48% to 18%) and Apple Music (from 27% to 21%). At the same time, the number of Ukrainian artists in the charts has also decreased: by 14% on Youtube Music, by 11% on Deezer, by 9% on Shazam, and by 8% on Deezer. In most cases, the language of the songs is the same as the country of origin of the musicians or bands. Platforms where people listen to songs in Ukrainian: Youtube Music - 60% and Deezer - 50%. Shazam shows the lowest percentage - 27%.
Some of the songs – recorded in the phonk style or DJ sets that do not use the performer's live voice, use recordings of other songs, recordings of dialogues in different languages – these songs are marked as djset in the chart.
From 65 to 96% of the top 100 songs are in Ukrainian or English, with the highest percentage on the Deezer platform at 96%. It also has the smallest percentage of songs in Russian – 2%.
The largest percentage of songs in Russian are listened to on Apple Music (23%) and Shazam (20%).

Before Russia's full-scale invasion, the Youtube Music chart consisted mainly of Russian artists. In January-February, the first 2 places were taken by GAYAZOV$ BROTHER$ and Lusia Chebotina, and the third place was taken by the Ukrainian band Artik & Asti, which moved to Russia in 2012. Starting in March, Ukrainian songs began to hit the charts, in particular, "Stefania" by Kalush was in the top 3 for 20 weeks. In early August, the top 10 consisted exclusively of Ukrainian artists. By June, the percentage of Ukrainian artists increased across all platforms, almost displacing Russian and foreign artists.
As of the end of January 2023, the percentage of Ukrainian artists in the top 10 began to decline. On Youtube Music, the percentage dropped from 100% to 70%, while on Shazam and Deezer, the percentage of Ukrainian artists in the TOP10 is 20%. On the Deezer and Shazam platforms, 80% of the artists are from the United States, and there are no Russian artists. In the TOP10 on Youtube Music, Apple Music, and Spotify, 20% are Russian artists.

Traffic of streaming services in Ukraine

According to web traffic figures for the summer of 2022, the number of Ukrainian users of the services has reached the level that existed before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Over the next six months, the share of Ukrainian users on all platforms remained stable at the same level as in June 2022, with a significant increase on Apple Music – by 40% (from 300k in June 2022 to 420k in December 2022). Youtube Music remains the most popular platform by the number of visits.

The number of downloads of mobile applications of streaming services began to grow in April, but did not recover to the level of February. In June, the total number of downloads of Youtube Music, Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and Shazam amounted to 391.3k, which is 8% less than in February (424.1k).

Over the next six months, the number of downloads of Youtube, Apple Music, Shazam, and Deezer applications did not change, but the number of Spotify downloads decreased significantly – from 208.4k in July to 144k in December 2022 – by 31%. In March 2022, when the figure was the lowest, it was higher than in December 2023 (9.1k).
