¹ This report compares returns matched on taxpayer ID from two consecutive years to determine the migration of Colorado tax filers from year one to year two. The report counts individual income tax filers, not including dependents who don’t file returns. Location is determined using residency statuses and mailing addresses self-reported on the return at the time of filing.
35
² "Filers Who Stayed" were Colorado residents in Year 1 and 2. "New Filers" were Colorado residents in Year 2, but not Year 1. "Filers Who Left" were Colorado residents in Year 1, but not in Year 2. "Net Migration" is the difference between "New Filers" and "Filers Who Left." "Total Resident Filers in Year 2" is the sum of "New Filers" and "Filers Who Stayed."
36
³ The Tax Year is one year earlier than the filing year. The demographics are the age and income of the tax filers during the Tax Year.
37
⁴ "Income" is the Federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) as reported on the Colorado return. The income reported on joint (i.e., married) returns represents two filers; those amounts are divided in half so that the average and median are per person, not per return.
38
⁵ Years 1 and 2 indicate when the sets of income tax returns were filed, which is assumed to be the year after the Tax Year (e.g., a tax return for 2020 is filed in 2021).
