This is one of Ontario's rarest butterflies and is listed as Endangered both federally and provincially. The only remaining populations are very localized and highly fragmented from one another and many have winked out over the past 20 years. Any pressure on the existing populations is a threat and there has been poaching at one of the largest known populations.

Very large population in the province. The species is unlikely to be targeted for poaching using iNaturalist data.

Likely a low risk to unobscure given most observations are of planted / naturalized individuals.

Listed species with few “native” sites that while is often it is planted, I’m not sure how it would satisfy users to see detailed locations of planted trees. This could be one where users might want to search out native stands for listing purposes, seed sources etc. Could unobscure everthing beyond native range.
Set to "open" in Ontario, "obscured" in Essex, Chatham-Kent, Lambton and Middlesex counties

Very rare in Ontario and a COSEWIC candidate species. Revealing locations is likely to result in some pressure to sites, many of which are sensitive occuring in protected areas.

Status UpdatedOntarioVascular PlantsRed sprucePicea rubensS32019-04-02bouteloua (via email)charlie: codominant to dominant in much of northern New England in the US, Ontario is edge of range, and presumably it’s rare because of that and because of habitat loss. For issues of habitat loss obscuring seems to do more harm than good since it removes community awareness of remaining populations. This is S3 which is uncommon rather than rare. This tree is important for us as it is an indicator of many things including acid rain, climate change, wetland health, etc.https://www.inaturalist.org/flags/3815542019-08-02Open2019-09-18
