IdeaShort description What we have done so far
2
Summer in oxfordAccellerate people to start up their own entrepenuerial projets (ie: bluedot/mats) Summer in EA Hub: work on a remote internship or independent project from an EA Hub. There would be some cohort activities, shared accommodations, and office space but relatively little management overhead. An exciting outcome of this would be the founding of new meta start-ups and initiatives. Similar to GCP
3
More support for the most established groupsLikely will first involve more case studies and deeper user interviews with "focus" uni leaders on how to best serve them. Could include additional mentorship, trainings, and/or workshopspiloted OSP - a peer mentorship netowrk for groups including advanced ones
4
Active efforts to use groups as a pipeline for identifying talent to fill particular bottlenecks. (a la stewardship)Improving system of connecting uni group students to relevant folk at events, more coordination with orgs around needs, possibly more job advertising. (Possibly roadtrip residency below works a bit on this)With events trialed some active connecting group members to people at EAGs etc. - We also partner with things like GCP and Bluedot to advertise their programs and give reccommendations
5
Boston summit Top uni groups learn from eachother with Harvard as a case study - really trying to kick up top unis a notch (probably like 2-weeks long)
6
More deliberate seeding/accellerating of "important" unisActive search for potential organizers at promising unis and additional support at the start of the semesterResidency right now at CMU to help find organizers, seeded Georgetown
7
Activities, events, and programs to improve epistemics in groups Would require deeper investigation/more collab with Chana probably but possibly workshops for groups, CFARish things for group organizers etc.Piloted an estimathon at EAGx berkeley, piloted a reasoning workshop
8
Coordinate experimentation for groupsSomething like: create a centralized platform for registering and documenting various types of experiements run in the uni group space. Including: guidance on who should be running these experiments. Leverage CEA access to a large sample size and coordination abilities to run experiments on programs etc. that could make groups dramatically better.
9
Facilitate regional networks of university groupsLeverage CEA's vantage point to connect groups within a region, maybe offer suggestions of what they can do (risk: Creating more layers leads to lower fidelity support) [or possibly on other variables than geographic ones](not us) Netherlands has this, midwest did a retreat - we have tried to encourage some others
10
Coordinate more work with Univerisities and Faculty (like SERI)For some unis, do more to facilitate relationships between group members and professors. Potentially start up EA related research projects or institutes like SERI.
11
Onboarding training for new group organizers at existing unis
12
Get a better idea of what's going on at different groupsDifferent approaches to this:
- Do more calls with various uni groups (or maybe even their members?), Catherine/Amarins-style
- Improve our CRM with notes we have on all groups
- Do visits to groups (would be more like user interviews with group members)
13
More Top-down programmingCould be many things, but the general idea is we'd have more ownership/quality control, offering programs with a frame of "CEA is running this program, and our group is participating in it" Example: things like the various MLAB offshoots
14
More intentional follow up with HEAsFollow up could be many things - e.g. trying to get them to work on a project or research for us, connecting the to work/internship opporutnities, recruiting them as mentors, calling with them ourselves/giving more career-ish mentorship, etc.
15
Coordinate more internship opportunities for members of university groupsOption: Survey members of uni EA groups about interest in internships, when they decide on them, etc. Coordinate with EA orgs to share data and encourage them to run internships (if applicable). Basically more coordination around summer activities for the members of uni groups.
Summer break seems like a high leverage time for students to test fit and skill up and internships can also act as a hiring pipeline.
16
Coordination of competitions or hackathons for members of groups to participate in
17
Improved Metrics and Evaluation for Uni groupsWe are starting some work on this but could put significantly more capacity into checking assumptions with data and getting more accurate metrics (ie: more calibrating around how accurate self-reports are) Creating more standadized surveys for groups to give to community members.Working on this with whole groups team with member survey and fellowship survey
18
Run retreats and events for non-UGAP participants (such as organizers from more advanced university groups)
19
Coordinate more residencies for the start of the semester or an organizer exchange program We have set up a process for this that we can have interns or VAs repeat relatively easily
20
Coordinate an old fashioned road trip residencySimilar to the SSC roadtrip - Or having small retreats at the start of the year
21
Set up regular sharing sessions for subgroups of the uni-group spaceNetherlands does this
22
Create opportunities for group members to accelerate their engagement with EA quickly (such as impact generator workshops)Some successful outside examples like Olivia and Akash's AI workshops and GCP summits (but would like some cause neutral/principles first ones)
23
More active efforts to improve high fidelity EA communication to people who may work with EAs in the future but do not align with the values themselves.Possibly message testing, user interviews with people who bounced off of EA but are influential in some way. Improved resources for group organizers: pitch guides/outreach guides/etc.Outreach guide, pitch guide, strategy discussions
24
Coordinate VAs and consultants for professionalised university groupsLeverage our position to coordinate additional support resources to more professionalized groups
25
Start alliances with CBGs / national community builders to seed groups for new UGAP roundWhere seeding means that national CBs will try to look for excited students studying at unis who don't have an EA group, and encourage them to start a group / apply for UGAP if they seem a good fit for organizing
26
More one-off trainings for uni CBsE.g. training on 1-1s, training on outreach to professors, etc.
27
Doing a writeup where we write in more detail why we work on X but not on Y
28
Creating more resources for cause specific groups
29
Improve UGAP
30
Regional coordinators for university groupsE.g. get a universtity group mentor or even coordinator (for e.g. experimentation) for all groups in one geographical location, e.g. Boston or Germany or Australia
31
UGAP for other cause areas (not AIS)
32
AIS group UGAP(tbh I am very hesitant of this) Basically, adapt UGAP resources to help start AIS groups.
