01/07/2020 15:32:34OnlineCrsLadytoday's #UngradingSlowChat question is:

Q1: What are the biggest drawbacks to grading right now that you want to solve or avoid? (both grading of assignments and also final grades)

for Wednesday, July 1...but feel free to answer ANYTIME with A1

01/07/2020 15:34:54OnlineCrsLady@drkarenhj @FredWBaker @dr_bw yes yes yes: I have had nothing but VERY POSITIVE experiences with that approach!

we're just starting the July #UngradingSlowChat today, so feel free to chime in there; we just started that this summer... June archive here, resources, etc.

01/07/2020 15:37:40OnlineCrsLadyQ1 #UngradingSlowChat some big drawbacks to grading for me were:
grading is unfair
grading is not useful as feedback
grading is stressful and distracting
grading discourages creativity and risk-taking

so, I opted for all-feedback-no-grades; my story here: https://t.co/LZAIePoK48 https://t.co/OZXD9AbR4z

01/07/2020 15:49:38OnlineCrsLadyquick note to explain: idea of SLOW Twitter chat is there's no rush, no specific time; it's asynchronous chat.
so, July chat runs question by question all this week, but feel free to chime in ANYTIME using #UngradingSlowChat

01/07/2020 16:09:17OnlineCrsLadyagree. for me putting a letter/number on student work is always subjective, partial, never the whole story.
on top of subjectivity, it's also very arbitrary: how did 90% become the sacred threshold for the letter grade of A?
it's absurd... and students know it.

01/07/2020 16:15:01OnlineCrsLady@edmunds_t very much agree... I am not a fan of rubrics insofar as they are a way to grade student work with numbers-disguised-as-empty-words, and often they are.
I don't use them.

01/07/2020 16:18:04OnlineCrsLady@scottgr60613 I use a points-based system, and that's my biggest problem.
the only reason I have points is because I am forced to turn in the stupid ABCDF at the end of the semester.
I would be SO HAPPY if we could just switch to P/NP instead so that I could discard points

01/07/2020 16:38:10OnlineCrsLadyI think Matt is right here... and that's why, for me, teaching online and ungrading have always gone together; I've been teaching online AND ungrading since 2002. a big reason I wanted to go online was to stop grading and go in other student-driven directions! #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/SbUsXiRAhl

15
01/07/2020 16:54:42dbuckeduA1: Answer's in the question--too many obstacles and challenges (e.g., "drawbacks") involved w/ grading to make it a worthwhile, meaningful part of learning. Want Ss to engage in the learning exercise, not "game" it for points/grades. #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/irnZpBtIir

16
01/07/2020 16:56:50OnlineCrsLadyYES! in evaluation comments about my approach to the final grade (yes, it's points, but "completion-based," i.e. full credit for every assignment completed), students talk about how it allowed them to focus on learning instead of grade: https://t.co/Ku5aePv8R7 #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/tEjbilOwPe

17
01/07/2020 16:58:35dbuckeduInteresting when we attend PD sessions that discuss student motivation and engagement, and then we return to traditional grading that strips away the very motivation we seek to engender. In this, we become complicit in our student's struggle to learn deeply. #UngradingSlowChat

01/07/2020 16:58:53AlyceWeikel@OnlineCrsLady A1: My middle school Ss often focus on "is this for a grade?" and "how many points?" Completion is their goal rather than growth and development of skills. Ungrading could help us find a way to focus on the process and true learning. #UngradingSlowChat

01/07/2020 17:07:45dbuckedu@AlyceWeikel @OnlineCrsLady Yes, Alyce. Delete the penalties & negative connotations that characterize so much grading. 26
01/07/2020 17:17:14dbuckedu@edmunds_t @OnlineCrsLady @DavidBuck Agreed. So much of my past grading was basically a futile attempt to "rationalize" my grades to Ss. 01/07/2020 17:19:35OnlineCrsLadymy experience also! for me, doing freeform feedback, responding to the student's work and letting that work drive my feedback process, has worked very well for me; I just snag what they've written and insert comments in plain text document. totally low tech #UngradingSlowChat :-) https://t.co/lxPW9yG6kc

29
01/07/2020 17:21:08OnlineCrsLady@AlyceWeikel @edmunds_t and since I teach writing, feedback is an essential part of any revision process, so reflection/revision are baked right in, and students then get to be proud of final results too... here's gallery of student projects! :-)

01/07/2020 17:22:44dbuckeduGood one, Susan! The transactional nature of traditional grading pits teachers against their students. The tendency is for us to employ assessments that focus on deficiencies rather than on empowering Ss. #UngradingSlowChat https://t.co/kIfXQADIqP

01/07/2020 17:24:09SJKonantz@dbuckedu @edmunds_t @OnlineCrsLady @DavidBuck A1. Exactly! I thought rubrics would make grading easier but using anything more than a single column checklist always left me spending more time rationalizing than providing good feedback. #UngradingSlowChat

32
01/07/2020 17:25:40dbuckeduI know we'll talk about this later in the week, but providing this type of feedback actually helps us improve. 01/07/2020 17:26:11OnlineCrsLady@SJKonantz @dbuckedu @edmunds_t @DavidBuck exactly! and that idea of checklist versus rubric is actually at heart of how my grading system works; I don't ask students to grade (rate) themselves. instead, they just use checklists to make sure assignment is complete (Declarations) https://t.co/Ws5kMoDqqo #UngradingSlowChat

01/07/2020 17:30:18dbuckeduA1: Incorporate feedback within culture of learning, not judgment. Ss see feedback in more meaningful ways when they know it's an essential part of the learning process. 01/07/2020 17:53:36OnlineCrsLadythis is my goal too: instead of top-down, adversarial, hierarchical, I prefer co-learning. with ungrading system I use, I become student in the class, side by side with everyone, just a fellow student who spends a LOT of time giving feedback #TotalCoLearner :-)

01/07/2020 18:07:44OnlineCrsLadyretweeting for #UngradingSlowChat

assessment and grading are NOT synonymous.

assessment is part of feedback processes, and feedback is part of learning. there are lots of ways to do assessment.

but letter/number/percentage grades are rating and ranking for purposes of control. https://t.co/GhHJf3XQlC

01/07/2020 18:16:24OnlineCrsLady@dbuckedu @LaurelWhisler YES: and of course this "standard of correctness" (and its obvious falsity) is why ungrading has really caught on with writing teachers especially.

01/07/2020 18:41:45dbuckedu@KWMathias Agreed with all -- These drawbacks really uncover the horrible power dynamic that grades produce. 01/07/2020 18:43:09mcjsaRubric design should center on values, e.g. what 'good writing' is.

01/07/2020 22:40:34OnlineCrsLady@MudKevin @edmunds_t that is a great way to think about evidence-of-learning approach!
pinging @dbuckedu ...can you think of anyone who has done a kind of "field guide to ungrading" that categorizes different ungrading approaches...?
that might be a fun project for a future chat!

01/07/2020 22:44:31OnlineCrsLady@MudKevin @edmunds_t YES! that idea of "no work is lost" is such an important theme, not just for ungrading, but just for course design in general, like the whole idea of project-based learning (work leads to the project), non-disposable assignments, etc. etc.

01/07/2020 22:58:58dbuckeduNotice some emerging themes from our July #UngradingSlowChat. One is the silencing of the student voice regarding evidence of learning. Grades take this agency away since the teacher’s judgment overrides the student’s ability to choose which evidence demonstrates their learning.

01/07/2020 23:01:17dbuckedu@OnlineCrsLady @MudKevin @edmunds_t @HumResPro I think this curation of approaches has your name written all over it! Sounds like a logical project emerging from our #UngradingSlowChat.

01/07/2020 23:30:01dbuckedu@OnlineCrsLady @MudKevin @edmunds_t We can reclaim the narrative surrounding grading. Make that narrative one of joy, of deep learning, of positive student experience. Use that new narrative to create a community of meaning-makers where Ss create authentic products that live beyond the course. #UngradingSlowChat

02/07/2020 00:54:42OnlineCrsLadyI also teach Gen. Ed. and ungrading is an obvious choice: we're not gatekeepers, not assessing specific skills for a specific major, not filling a required step in a curriculum program etc.
instead, Gen. Ed. is about open-ended exploring...perfect for ungrading

02/07/2020 01:29:26OnlineCrsLadyone reason given for P/NP grading at many schools that adopted emergency P/NP grading during pandemic Spring was because of student stress & anxiety about grades... but that's true ALL the time.

02/07/2020 01:46:29OnlineCrsLady@DaniBSchwartz it is a night-and-day difference for me, both in how I write the feedback and also in how students approach it AS FEEDBACK, something to use... not something to feel defensive about, but just ideas to help them keep on moving ahead and improving their writing! #UngradingSlowChat

02/07/2020 02:07:00dbuckedu@theVogelman Agreed, Brett! Our students have been encouraged so long to value the grade as the sole focus for their effort. 02/07/2020 14:55:59OnlineCrsLadyA2 feedback is SO MUCH EASIER without grades! feedback is now JUST feedback, not justification for the grade. I teach writing, so feedback is crucial (CRUCIAL) element in the classes.
I call my approach all-feedback-no-grades.

02/07/2020 15:10:48edmunds_t@OnlineCrsLady I believe it will be easier to provide feedback that, to the student, will feel less judgmental. The feedback in the absence of a grade becomes true feedback.

It will be more difficult to answer the students who ask "What do I need to do to get an A?" #UngradingSlowChat

02/07/2020 15:16:17OnlineCrsLady@edmunds_t yes, exactly: it's EASY to get rid of grades on assignments, and students are glad (in my experience) to stop getting grades on assignments.
final grade is much harder; that's why I use a points/contract system: https://t.co/HT1NoNUod3
but I'd far prefer P/NP

02/07/2020 16:21:24dbuckeduA2: The change I'm most proud of since I began teaching without grades is that I can honestly say that I'm implementing a pedagogy of empathy. 02/07/2020 16:23:03OnlineCrsLadyYES! if you are looking at a way to build mutual trust with your students, ungrading is such a powerful strategy!

02/07/2020 16:26:28dbuckeduA2: A perceived challenge of #ungrading is that students will not know where they are in the course or know how they're doing. There is a false equivalency that receiving grades means knowledge of learning. When feedback replaces grades, Ss actually know more! #UngradingSlowChat

93
02/07/2020 16:31:53dbuckeduA freeing aspect of #ungrading is that I can change the lens through which I see my students and their potential! “It is tempting to look at students through the lens of defects because it puts the onus on them to somehow amend their ways . . .”-- @biblioracle #UngradingSlowChat

02/07/2020 16:37:47dbuckedu@edmunds_t @OnlineCrsLady Interesting point!
