Brandon1.xI thought the whole point of side effects is that they were not the sole output of a single builder? Cleaning them when a single builder disappears is probably not the correct behavior but it mike make sense to add this to the -cc proposal.

Greg1.xp5This will become more crucial as the TeX builder is exercised more, since it uses _lots_ of SideEffects, and I would imagine that other Builders will begin to do it as well. You wouldn't have to twist my arm very hard to increase the priority.

StevenINVALID (or doc)SideEffect() files don't get cleaned, they're for things like logs that can be updated by multiple things at once. The TeX builders don't use any SideEffect() files, the ancillary files it creates are all additional targets added by emitters. This should either be closed as pilot error, or turned into a documentation issue to make this clearer.

Greg1.x?Using os.system + env is not an ideal approach in the first place, and we know fork/exec has a race with imports. Does subprocess deal with substituting ENV and not have import races? I agree with Brandon about the placement, but what priority?

Steven1.xp2Most of the time we only use the settings in ENV. I think this may be coming from the ParseConfig() function, which uses env.backtick(), where we use subprocess.Popen() (equivalent of os.system()) with the native environment.

BrandonThe format of the message has changed in many different versions of SCons. Not sure what the current message is.

Greghmmm...Where does this error message occur? I can't find it. It seems to be referring to an override environment, but in that case the actual error message says something about multiple ways to build the target, does it not?

GregThe temp files are the same, but I don't see it trying to run a command the second time before asserting "Fichier introuvable" ("File not found"). I have no idea what the problem could be.
