Reed asks the Profiteer to research the origin of the weapons the Cotati used, and the information revealed will lead to more stories. Ben and Alicia Grimm double the size of their family in an instant. Meanwhile the Unseen sees all, and the startling return of the Watcher will surely lead to more stories.

Birds of Prey: Jurnee Smollett Had to Lose Her Black Canary Muscles for Lovecraft CountryIt's been a big year for Jurnee Smollett, who has starred in both Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and the new series, Lovecraft Country. But apparently, while she had to bulk up to play Dinah in Birds, she had to lose the muscle mass to play Letitia Lewis in Lovecraft.

In an interview with Men's Health, Jurnee Smollett spoke about her workouts for both roles. For Black Canary, Smollett had to undergo intensive training, which included mixed martial arts and putting on 10-15 pounds of muscle. Working with Hollywood trainer Jeanette Jenkins for Lovecraft Country, Smollett had to aim for more of a "sprinter's body" than a martial artist.

The CW Has Apparently Renamed Its DC Superhero UniverseWhile The CW's Arrowverse has generally drawn its name from flagship series Arrow, there was some question as to just the superhero universe might call itself following Oliver Queen/Green Arrow's death during the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover. Now, we may just have an answer.

During a trailer for the various Arrowverse series, a card appeared on screen indicating the name of The CW's superhero universe has, in fact, changed to "The CWverse."

Candice Patton, Ray Fisher React to John Boyega's Star Wars Racism CriticismsStar Wars actor John Boyega recently criticized Disney for its inability to write characters of color. Now, other actors are joining the conversation and providing a glimpse into their own Hollywood experiences.

Fellow actor Candace Patton, known for her work on the CW series The Flash, expressed agreement with Boyega's comments, as well as her gratitude for the Star Wars actor opening the door to the conversation. She wrote, "Similar experience. Similar feelings. Grateful for this."

The Suicide Squad: James Gunn Defends Racebending White CharactersAs the world of superhero cinema continues to churn forward, Hollywood rightfully begins to introduce more properties featuring underrepresented parties, decades after cape flicks became the primary draw at the box office. It took Marvel Studios ten years and nearly 20 movies before the Burbank-based studio introduced Black Panther to the masses, a movie that's gone on to become one of the most profitable franchises for the House of Ideas. Even then, Kevin Feige and his team didn't hire a woman to direct one of the studio's movies until Captain Marvel, the 21st movie the studio released.

That's a large reason why The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has defended race-bending movie characters from how they initially appear in the source material. In a comment on one recent Instagram post, a fan asked the filmmaker his thoughts on David Ayer casting Will Smith as Deadshot in Suicide Squad. As the fan put it, Deadshot — real name Floyd Lawton — is white in the comics and appeared as such in the Arrowverse.

"Again, that's pretty simple - people aren't making movies about unknown superheroes," Gunn responded on the post. "In addition, it's innately discriminatory to think what makes a character a character is his or her ethnicity and not his or her personality. What is it, if not racism, that David Ayer, for casting Will Smith as Deadshot, and John Watts, for casting Zendaya as Mary Jane, got thousands of times more shit for those choices than I did for making Drax and Mantis aliens instead of humans in Guardians?"

You're Not Meant to Capitalize Star Wars' 'tauntaun'—and There's a Suitably Weird Reason WhyWelcome, friends, to what is becoming a recurring occasion where I just talk about silly Star Wars linguistics, apparently. Over the weekend, Lucasfilm story group member Matt Martin blew my mind with a shocking revelation: The Empire Strikes Back’s Tauntauns aren’t Tauntauns.

As Martin went on to explain, he wasn’t correcting people who have dared to defy Star Wars’s official glossary inadvertently all these years, because, well, gatekeeping such an odd thing in the first place would be weird. He was just hoping to shine a light on the kinds of bizarre things Lucasfilm’s story group has to keep in mind while shaping and maintaining the Star Wars world as we know it. It’s not just about making sure the timeline all tracks up and that it’s Mitth’raw’nurodo, not Mitth’rawn’nuro’do or what have you, but dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s of a terminology far, far away. The Jedi librarians of our world, if you will: same love of books, just without the lightsabers.

Star Trek: Discovery season 3 trailer jumps into the futureTo coincide with the 54th anniversary of the TV debut of Star Trek’s original series, CBS has unveiled a new trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Discovery which is set to premiere on October 15th. If you’re in the US, where the show will stream on CBS All Access, you can watch the full trailer via the tweet below. International viewers, who’ll be able to watch the series on Netflix starting October 16th, can watch it over on the official Star Trek website.

Discovery’s first two seasons were set roughly 10 years before the original Star Trek, but with season 3 the crew of the USS Discovery are traveling some 930 years into their future to the year 3188. In this future, the Federation has mostly collapsed after an event ominously referred to as “the Burn.” The season will follow the crew as they attempt to restore the galactic organization.

Snake Eyes: Paramount Reschedules G.I. Joe Spin-Off for October 2021G.I. Joe Origins: Snake Eyes was originally set to release on Oct. 23, 2020, but Paramount has pushed the release date back a full year due to COVID-19. The film is now set to hit theaters (hopefully) by Oct. 22, 2021.

Snake Eyes is the only wide entry theatrical release slated for that October weekend, with both Universal/Blumhouse/Miramax's Halloween Kills and 20th Century Studio's The Last Duel (directed by Ridley Scott) set to debut the weekend before on Oct. 15, according to Deadline.

Death Metal revisits three DC Crises in Trinity Crisis #1 previewDC hearts its Multiverse-encompassing 'Crises' - and its latest arrives Tuesday, September 8 - Dark Nights: Death Metal Trinity Crisis #1.

The 48-page one-shot tie-in to the Death Metal event is written by the captain of the Death Metal ship Scott Snyder and illustrated by Francis Manapul and of course features DC's 'Trinity' - Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman in starring roles.

"With Superman freed from his New Apokolips prison, the classic Trinity lineup is reunited and ready to rock!" reads DC's official description. "Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman amp up their power to launch an assault on Castle Bat, and that's just the warm-up act!"

DC says Trinity Crisis #1 doesn't just deal with one Crisis, but three Crises simultaneously.

DC's 'Original Batman' Leads a New Super Team in 80-Page Generations: ShatteredA giant-sized one-shot will kick off DC's "Generations" event with the original version of Batman leading a team of classic heroes.

GamesRadar has the first look at Generations: Shattered #1, which will launch DC's delayed event and see a slew of older takes on superheroes join forces to save the universe. The one-shot will span 80 pages and cost $9.99, finally beginning the storyline that DC intended to debut before COVID-19 halted production. Atari Force: DC May Have Resurrected Its WEIRDEST Video Game Super-TeamThe most recent volume of Shazam, written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Scott Kolins and Dale Eaglesham, has taken Billy Batson and his family across the various realms known as the Magiclands, seven dimensions known as the Darklands, the Earthlands, the Funlands, the Gamelands, the Monsterlands, the Wildlands, and the Wozenderlands. Each of these dimensions is unique and deadly in their own way, but in Shazam #14, the last issue in the series, Billy and his family return to the Magiclands to help sort out the various problems plaguing them. In a passing text about their time in the Gamelands, Billy mentions that he helped the Atari Force overthrown the Game Master. This may have seemed like a throwaway comment, a cool little connection to the theme of the Gamelands, but in actuality the Atari Force is a super-team decades old in DC lore. But who exactly are the Atari Force?

Created by Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas, Atari Force #1 was first published in 1982 and designed to tell stories related to home console games developed by Atari Inc. The very first publication, running for five issues, followed the adventures of a team of humans from different nations selected by an organization named, appropriately, A.T.A.R.I. Otherwise known as the Advanced Technology and Research Institute. The Atari Force traveled across the multiverse to find a new planet for humanity to inhabit due to Earth nearing ecological collapse, clearly indicating an eco-friendly outlook by the writers even way back then.

How John Ridley's The Other History of the DC Universe Examines Crisis Events From a Minority PerspectiveJohn Ridley's The Other History of the DC Universe was announced two years ago. Now, the author is revealing more details about his upcoming book --particularly why he chose to tell the story from a minority lens.

Ridley told Polygon, "for me going into it, it was less about just rehashing, say, Crisis on Infinite Earths, but really getting into, say, a character’s difficult relationship with Superman. If you’re a character of color, and you’re faced with bias, and you’re faced with intolerance, and you see an individual who is literally an alien but because of his forward-facing facade, his visage — his passport is stamped. And at the same time, when people have a difficult relationship with anyone, but something like Crisis on Infinite Earths happens and Supergirl is killed? How do characters react? How do they react to Superman, and how do they reconcile how they felt about this individual? But at the same time, he was out there trying to do right, he was out there trying to do certain things."

Meet Sister Dagger, the new Marvel character positioned as a breakout star in Shang-ChiShang-Chi will be returning in a new limited series this fall - but another martial arts character is coming with him whom Marvel is positioning to be a breakout star: Sister Dagger.

Sister Dagger will debut in September 30's Shang-Chi #1, as one of the members of the Five Weapons Society - a newly-revealed group whose history is said to go back centuries.

Sister Dagger is the champion of the House of the Deadly Dagger, an organization based in France with a mansion secluded away behind a waterfall.

"As one of the most talented martial artists in the world, Sister Dagger is the youngest House Champion in the history of the Five Weapons Society," reads Marvel's description of her.

Sister Dagger appears in a newly-revealed variant to December’s Shang-Chi #4, seen here.

The Five Weapons Society consists of Sister Dagger and three other new characters: Brother Sabre, Sister Hammer, and Brother Staff. Each is a representative of a 'house': the Deadly Dagger, the Deadly Sabre, the Deadly Hammer, the Deadly Staff.

So what is the fifth house - and its champion? The Deadly Hand, but it is currently without a champion. That vacant fifth spot appears to be Shang-Chi's - if he wants it - given it was previously held by his father, the now-deceased Zheng Zu.

"Witness the Marvel Universe's greatest fighter return to a world of death and destruction he thought he left behind long ago - and discover the secrets to Shang-Chi’s past that will change his world forever," reads Marvel's description of the first issue.

Basically Every Black Panther Comic Is Free on Comixology Right NowA fitting tribute for a King.

Readers on the online comic retailer Comixology this weekend have discovered something remarkable: nearly every single issue of all of the retailer’s Black Panther books is free. Ranging from early in the character’s history to contemporary releases, this library is an expansive glimpse into one of Marvel’s most complex, storied, and, at this point, popular characters, from his messy origins to his modern glories.

This move, which does not appear to have been announced previously, is almost certainly intended as a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who passed away unexpectedly last weekend after a long, private battle with colon cancer. Boseman’s turn as T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought the character to a wide audience, and Black Panther in particular was widely acclaimed and stunningly good, possibly the most significant moment for the character ever.

Franklin Richard and Iceman explore the secret history of the Fantastic Four in SeptemberFor those old school Fantastic Four fans still getting used to little Franklin Richards rockin' black hair and a stud in his ear, now he's added a full-on X-Men uniform to his more mature look.

Marvel has given Newsarama readers a first look at a splash page from September 30's Fantastic Four #24, featuring Franklin - whose status as a mutant has been an off-and-on source of storylines for Marvel for decades - hanging with his X-friends on Krakoa.

The living mutant island can pretty much transport its residents anywhere through the gateways, however, so after a hologram call from mom by the bottom half of the page Franklin is shooting through New York's Washington Square Park on his way to the FF's unassuming 4 Yancy St. headquarters with Iceman.

Yeah, Iceman.

Turns out he and the FF got history.

"Hey, remember that time Iceman replaced the Human Torch as a member of the Fantastic Four? No?" Marvel's official solicitation copy asks. "Well, Johnny Storm sure remembers! And now it's time to let everybody else in on the secret of the Fantastic Four story we were never supposed to talk about!"

Marvel Introduces Wolverine's New Arch-Nemesis, Solem, Ahead of Their X of Swords DebutThe Dawn of X relaunch has caused many changes in the X-Men's lore, and Wolverine is no exception. Marvel recently announced that the Clawed Canuck would get a new arch-nemesis, Solem.

Marvel's statement reads, "Meet Wolverine's new arch-nemesis in X of Swords!" The rest of the description says, "Thor has Loki. Spider-Man has the Green Goblin. And now, Wolverine has Solem. Don’t miss the first appearance of Wolverine’s new arch-nemesis in X OF SWORDS, CHAPTER 3: Wolverine #6, on sale in October!"

X-Men Triage and Tempus go solo with Liberty and Justice For All prose novelThe cover to the upcoming X-Men prose novel Liberty and Justice For All has been revealed. This is part of Aconyte's Marvel prose novel series and the kick-off line for its X-Men-specific line, Xavier Institute.

Written by Carrie Harris, Liberty and Justice For All follows the young mutants Triage and Tempus as they take off on their first solo mission, without any supervision from the adult X-Men.

"As part of their training at the New Charles Xavier Institute, Triage and Tempus are allowed to attempt their first solo flying mission," reads Aconyte's description of the book. "Some way into their mission, they pick up an urgent SOS message – Sentinels are attacking a superpowered mutant, who is struggling to protect an injured politician. When they abandon their lesson and answer the call, however, the identity of both will cause the two young X-Men far more problems than they bargained for."

Kurt Busiek returns to Amazing Spider-Man for a new untold tale with #850Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man will be celebrating 850 issues on October 7 with the release of the current volume's Amazing Spider-Man #49. And in addition to a lead story from the current run's creators, they are also welcoming Spider-Man creators of the past - including Kurt Busiek, Chris Bachalo, and Tim Townsend.

Themed as some sort of spiritual continuation of Busiek's '90s series Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man #49's 'All You Need is...?' short takes Peter Parker back to junior college for some classic action - and even a classic villain, the Red Rajah.

And if you're a fan of Chris Bachalo's artistic idiosyncrasies, get ready: there are strawberries. Lots of strawberries.

Marvel's Spider-Man Gets Limited Print for Second AnniversaryBelieve it or not, Marvel's Spider-Man released on the PlayStaion 4 two years ago today. That's right, the best selling PlayStation exclusive is celebrating another birthday and to commemorate the occasion, a new limited print variant is releasing in collaboration with Grey Matter Art and freelance artist Chun Lo.

The piece shows Spider-Man in his Anti-Ock suit that's been put through the ringer with his Insomniac Game's designed suit underneath. The piece is 18'' x 24'' with a varnish finish, and encompassing 9 colors with metallic inks. The print will be limited to 100 numbered pieces and will be available later today at 5 p.m. PDT

Singer Akon Announces Plan for $6 Billion Real-Life Wakanda in SenegalMusic mogul Akon is bringing Black Panther to life by building a city based on Wakanda. The recording artist announced his plans on social media and is already a third of the way toward raising the $6 billion needed to complete the city. Senegal will play host to the mecca and people on social media were thrilled to see the concepts. The kind of Afro-futurism that made Black Panther really sing on-screen is everywhere in the renders on Akon’s site. He called it an honor to be in the same breath as the dazzling fictional city. Especially after the passing of Chadwick Boseman who helped millions of fans see themselves on screen. Akon City is still a dream for the moment, but the increased exposure this week will no doubt attract more investors to the project.

"The system back home treats them unfairly in so many different ways that you can never imagine. And they only go through it because they feel that there is no other way," Akon said. The Expanse expands to comic books with new in-continuity story building up to season fiveThe Amazon Prime series The Expanse is expanding to comic books again, with a new limited series through Boom! Studios.

Boom!'s The Expanse picks up right after the fourth season's finale, and will be an in-continuity story bridging to the upcoming fifth season.

You Can Now Listen To Andy Serkis Read You The Entirety Of The HobbitWhile Andy Serkis might be best known for his physicality, with so many of his roles requiring mo-cap suited capers, he also has a fantastic voice--and has put that voice to good use in a new audiobook for The Hobbit, which is available now.

Back in May, while most of the world was still under strict lockdown, Serkis spent 12 hours reading The Hobbit cover-to-cover in a "Hobbitathon" livestreamed for charity. Then, in July, Harper Collins announced that a new audiobook of The Hobbit would feature Andy Serkis, presumably for everyone who missed out on the livestreamed version.

Now, the audiobook is available, and the official Tolkien estate Facebook page has released a neat behind-the-scenes video showing Serkis delivering the iconic opening of the book.
