TimestampGroup Names (first names only)The Title: What does "Valiant" mean in both denotation and connotation?Symbolism: What are the major symbols, groups of symbol types (or “tropes”), and symbolic actions in Valiant? What are the connotations of these symbols? The Monomyth: What are Val’s tests? Does she pass them? How?The Lover: Describe the "love" triangle between Luis, Dave, and Lolli.Gender: Very early in the narrative, we get the sense that sex and gender will be major themes of the story. What indications does Black give us that sex--and sexual transgressions--will be a major theme? Why do you think sex and gender are so important to the story?Borderlands: Valiant features a significant amount of border, boundary, and threshold crossings, both literal and figurative. Make a quick list of some of these. What do these crossings (or transgressions) mean for Val? How do they represent her journey as a hero?Liminal Spaces: All those thresholds (see above) lead to places and spaces which might be considered to be "unusual" or even "forbidden". Describe these spaces. Who (and what) occupies them? Why would these types of spaces feature so strongly in a book for teens and young adults. Metaphor & Meaning: The magical substance "Nevermore", or "Never", is a metaphor for drug use and addiction. However, the plot of the novel involves significant differences between Never and other street drugs like Heroin. What it is the difference (or differences)? Does this difference justify (or even explain) Val's drug use and budding addiction? Why or why not?

For the faeries it helps them shapeshift and keeps them from getting sick from too much iron exposure. When humans take it gives them power over other people and mostly the only negative side effect is that it is extremely addictive. Its not like other heroin where all the side effects are negative. Even though val wanted more and had access to it she didn't take any for herself. "the thing about drugs is that they make things kind of shift, go leftward and sideways and upside down, but with never, you can take everyone else upside down with you. What else can do that?"
