Paying For College Spreadsheet: How To
2
This is a tool for non-OSU students to use so they can estimate the costs of direct expenses (their billing coasts at their college), one term at a time. This tool can be edited as you need, but in general, you can follow these steps and ultimately estimate the costs of your tuition and fees, financial resources, and thus, any anticipated gaps of funding. Then, you can consider your income and expenses outside of your OSU bill and get a plan for that as well.

TABS 2 - TABS 5AY 1, AY 2, AY 3, & AY 4In this tab, you can assess each term or semester in an upcoming year. You can also compare scenarios if you want. There are currently 4 sets of term or semester data tables you could complete. Delete, add more, etc. as you need to. You can label as well. A person , for example, label the first section Summer Term, followed by Fall Term, Winter Term, and Spring Term. Or, a person may use this to compare a situation, and label the first section, “All Classes In-Person” and have the second one be, “All Classes Online”, and the third - “A Mix of Online and In-Person Classes” and they may delete the fourth. The point is you can customize it to meet your needs. You have multiple AY tabs to estimate future academic years if you need.

Academic PlanningYou will go one term or semester at a time. In creating your estimates, you need to have a good idea of the classes you will take - how many credits, will they be online or in-person, etc. This is essential to have your academic plan in place that is realistic and in alignment with your goals. You can use this data to estimate costs as well! So, do your best to input your courses for that term. At a minimum, include the amount of credits and type of credits (example: in-person or online).

Determine Direct CostsDirect costs are costs billed directly to your school each term or semester. Direct costs may consist of, but are not limited to, tuition, fees, housing & dining (f living on-campus), health insurance (for international students, for example), and matriculation fees. Check with your school to find out what sort of direct expenses to anticipate each term or semster. This part of the worksheet will help you assess direct costs each term/semester along with resources you have coming in to help you pay for those costs. If you need further help calculating your direct costs, please make an appointment with a CAFE Peer Mentor to help guide your through the process.

Every school has posted tuition and fee charts that are usually updated every year. You will want to find your schools tuition and fee charts for the most updated information and estimates.

If you need further help calculating your direct costs, please make an appointment with a CAFE Peer Mentor to help guide your through the process. We help anyone in Oregon, so do not hesitate to reach out cafe.oregonstate.edu.
