8/5/2025 16:31:361. Differentiated Lesson Planning
One of my trusted prompts is:
“Craft a lesson plan on the Domain and Range of functions for 9th–12th grade students. Include tiered activities for regular, honors, and gifted learners, while aligning with the 2023 Virginia SOL standards and incorporating ‘I can’ statements.”
This prompt has been invaluable in allowing me to create lessons that cater to the diverse levels I teach—high school, gifted students, and even college-level groups—ensuring that every student is challenged and engaged.

2. Ethical Discussions in STEM**
To inspire critical thinking, particularly among gifted or college students, I turn to:
“Generate thought-provoking discussion questions about the ethics of AI in science, touching on bias, fairness, and real-world implications.”
These prompts foster dynamic classroom dialogues that critically examine the intersection of science, technology, and society.

3. Curriculum Organizer
When planning my instruction, this prompt keeps me organized and focused:
“Summarize this unit into essential questions, learning objectives, misconceptions, and vocabulary. Format it in a clear table.”
It’s incredibly effective for organizing units in math, data science, or theology in a way that’s accessible and easily adaptable.
AI has truly revolutionized both my teaching approach and my thought process. It has become an invaluable companion in my professional journey, helping me clarify my ideas, communicate more effectively, and design engaging, inclusive, and challenging learning experiences. While I always prioritize my values, expertise, and teaching philosophy, AI wonderfully amplifies my ability to uphold these principles on a larger scale.

What I find most thrilling is how AI has fostered my growth as a writer and thinker, allowing me to be more concise, intentional, and reflective. Rather than outsourcing my creativity, I’m honing and refining it.

As I embrace AI more fully, I feel a strong responsibility to guide my students in using it ethically and thoughtfully—not merely as a shortcut, but as a valuable tool for learning, exploration, and self-expression. My goal is to empower them with AI, ensuring they see it as an ally in their educational journey.

We are at an exciting crossroads in education! I see AI not as a threat to effective teaching but as a wonderful opportunity to enhance it—provided we stay curious, critical, and focused on our students’ needs. Together, we can embrace this transformative moment!

13
11/11/2024 10:59:52Some of my favorite AI prompts include creating lesson plans, such as, "Design a week-long lesson plan for 7th-grade math focused on ratios and proportions," with parameters specifying grade level, topic, and activity types. For student activities, I use prompts like, "Design a fun group activity for practicing algebraic equations," while specifying group size, time, and difficulty. To support learning visually, I prompt AI to generate infographics, such as, "Create a colorful infographic explaining the order of operations for 6th graders," emphasizing age-appropriate language and visuals. AI also helps with feedback and grading using prompts like, "Provide encouraging feedback for a student who scored 8/10 on a fractions quiz," or "Grade these math problems, accepting slight variations if the method is correct," ensuring responses are positive and constructive.

It is for a presentation for my 6th-grade art class unit on Latin American Art, focusing on the influence of pre-Columbian cultures like the Maya, Purépecha, and Aztec on the art and culture of Central America today.

ChatGPT gave me a fantastic outline, breaking down the main points of the video and providing ideas for student discussions and projects (no visuals).

Brisk (geared for educators) not only created an outline but also a quiz and full presentation with images, life cycles, migration routes, discussion questions, and project suggestions—all on the slides.
It's incredible to see how rapidly AI is being integrated into nearly every platform I use, from Google to Canva. When I started this class in May, compared to now in August, the changes are astonishing—everything from platform redesigns to commercials during the Olympics, all promoting new AI features.
I began with ChatGPT but have since explored other platforms and apps tailored specifically for educators. There is so much available!

You should focus on the way nature is depicted in the novel." I like the more human-like, sometimes more sophisticated responses of Claude.ai, but find the free version of Chat GPT superior because of its access to the web.

3/23/2024 12:32:22My favorite prompts so far have been to utilize ChatGPT to improve a draft without significantly changing the writing. The parameters included correcting the grammar, punctuation, and spelling without changing the words.

Another prompt I liked dealt with vocabulary. First, I asked for a list of verbs used in standardized testing. Then, I included the parameters to define each verb and give an example of a question using the word. I also added the parameters to make the definitions easy enough for a 10-year-old to understand. I did the same thing with a list of words that all high school students should know by graduation. I could follow up with quizzes, activities, and tests using too.
I'm just getting started, and I am trying find ways to embrace what is coming without simply giving my students a tool to use to avoid writing.

Additionally, explain what prompted the disparities in the narrator’s feelings? What was F. Scott Fitgerald’s thematic purpose for using these narrative techniques in his novel?

Parameters: Cite 2 pieces of textual evidence in each paragraph from throughout the novel to support your argument. Use one direct or partial quote as one of the two pieces of evidence. Use a concise theme statement as the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph.

I feel like I'm slowly moving from beginner to intermediate, still only scratching the surface. Moving forward, I want to focus on how I can teach students to be good prompt engineers and get the most out of AI without "cheating" or using it to avoid or disengage with the work.

12/7/2023 6:25:311. Write a short fairy-tale in German using this set of verbs in the present perfect. Be sure to include this set of vocabulary words. Write it for a beginning student of German.

2. Compare and contrast the various figures that make up the German Christmas pantheon: Sankt Nikolaus, Knecht Ruprecht, das Christkind, Krampus, and der Weihnachtsmann. How do these figures relate in the German celebration of the holiday?
Well, in the beginning I was massively impressed but as time has passed, I have discovered that a) Chat GPT makes far too many errors to be trusted and b) certain tasks are still too nuanced for AI. I don't know about the other versions, but the free version has a pretty low ceiling and once you bump into it, you have to do all the work. And as such, it is easier for me to just do the work in the first place instead of acting as an editor and fact-checker for Chat GPT.
49
12/6/2023 15:35:061) Give me five sentences that include at least two helping verbs and three prepositions.
2) Make a 5 point rubric for grading a narrative essay. Use Oregon state standards and write the rubric in student friendly language.
3) Create a student friendly handout that explains the rules for writing dialogue. Include rules for punctuation and formatting.
4) Explain American Transcendentalism in the style of People's magazine.
5) Create a 13 day itinerary that includes flights from Portland to Boston and Washington DC to Portland with travels days every three days. Make sure to limit walking distance between sights and attractions.
Students need to be super specific when asking for suggestions from ChatGPT. I recommend that teachers lay out the prompts ahead of time. For example, students could ask, "Give me suggestions for how to make my topic sentence more succinct". Otherwise, the students will write simplistic prompts that will cue the AI to (re)write their work for them. It's important that the students are using the suggestions to improve their work.
50
12/2/2023 10:32:46Prompt 1:
Write a 500 word story at a 970L lexile level. Make it a funny story about teachers, who are acting like poorly scripted video game NPCs, having to fight off an army of zombie fans of pro soccer and pro football teams. The teachers struggle until they get help from students who know video game cheat codes and who know how to cook mouth watering food. The students plug-in keyboards, mice, and controllers into classroom fidgets so they can enter cheat codes into them to make the fidgets trick the zombie soccer fans into attacking the zombie football fans. Include 3 explicit metaphors with "like a" in the metaphor. Structure the story to have a main idea and several supporting details.

Prompt 2:
Write a 500 word funny story about a high school basketball team playing against a team called the turtles, however it turns out that the high school team was playing basketball against real turtles. The turtles beat the high school team in the game, but in the end the turtles give the high school team a bunch of food from popeyes as a thank you for letting them win even though the high school team is confused because they did not let the turtles win on purpose. Include metaphors and write this at a 7th grade reading level

Prompt 3 (Our school psychologist leads an conflict resolution group, and asked me if ChatGPT could create a scenario of a conflict between two girls where one is accusing the other of trying to steal her boyfriend):
Create a dialogue as if its a text between 2 teenagers, not too long, where one accuses the other of trying to take her boyfriend. it would be good if one person sounds very angry, threatening.
My biggest question is about what AI services are out there that handle math really well. ChatGPT does an OK job of creating math equations, however it is terrible at consistently providing correct answers, especially the more complex that the equation is. Is there a good AI like ChatGPT that works well with creating and helping with math content?

8/20/2023 16:19:481) I really like the prompt of "Take this article/artifact and make it appropriate for a middle school audience." A parameter I might add to this would be "make it appropriate for 6th grade" or "Beginner ELs" since those are the students I work with. 2) "Be my partner in a middle school debate. I will choose the topic and argue for one side of that topic. You will argue the other side." The topic would be one of the parameters used. We do a lot of work with academic language, so if I want students to practice using certain academic vocabulary, I could also set a parameter that focuses on the vocabulary I want them to use in their debate. I could see this as being a way to practice for a socratic seminar. 3) "Create an interactive game for practicing (insert English language concept). Game must have a (speaking, listening, writing, or reading) component, and be appropriate for middle school beginner ELs. Write a rubric that corresponds with the game that a teacher can use to evaluate students' mastery of (insert English language concept)." 4) "Design a stations lesson for middle school beginner English Learners. Lesson must have 3 stations, and 3 rotations that are each 15 minutes long. One station should focus on reading, one station focus on writing, and one station focus on listening/speaking. The theme for the lesson should be (insert English language concept). Students can work together or independently. Instructions for each station must be simple and straight forward." 5) "Write a story about..." Parameters that I would use would depend on what grammar concept my students are working on. For example: "Write a story about someone asking for directions. This person is new to a city and does not know how to navigate themselves around to different locations. They are trying to go to the grocery store, the library, the park, school, and home. They must ask different people for directions and then follow them. Students reading this story will be asked to identify directional language and vocabulary words for different places." 6) Create a list of writing prompts appropriate for 6th graders. Make them funny and for wrong answers only"

8/17/2023 10:53:04I got the idea from this class to have ChatGPT write short stories. So last night I sat down with my 5-year-old daughter and asked her a couple questions about the short story adventure we were going to make. We ended up having it write a short story about her searching for rare frogs in the jungle. I plan to do the same thing with my students.

I also love using ChatGPT to write convincing articles as different characters; again, something I discovered from this class. I had ChatGPT try to convince me aliens are real as a Pirate, Johnny Depp, Peter from Family Guy, Joe Rogan, and Yoda.
This class is hands down my favorite professional development I have been a part of. It focuses much more on hands on learning rather than writing what feels like never ending essays. Thank you for that.

8/10/2023 10:12:25Create a lesson that teaches the skill of listening. It should last 35 minutes. It should include questions for two partners to practice with. Include a whole group activity and a two person partner activity. End the lesson with a reflection.

Read this book on this topic and write a list of questions about the book. Include questions about the characters motivations, about the theme, and about ways it applies to my life.

Take this piece of writing and give feedback on how it can be improved. Give feedback that shows what the piece does well and areas it could be improved.

Write a song about Mesopotamia that uses the words polytheism, Tigris, Euphrates, civilization, Hammurabi, and chariot.
This is fun. My 72-year-old mother really enjoyed hearing about what I was learning in the course. Now she wants to have her book club pick a book on AI so they can all talk about it.

It is amazing how quickly AI is developing. At the start of this course I was mentioning how powerful it would be if learning management systems such as Toddle integrate AI into their platforms. I could see it really transforming how we are able to personalize education to one that doesn't rely on grade levels to assign standards but instead is more dynamic to students needs. Recently Toddle announced that they are integrating AI into their system. They demonstrated how it can be used to help with lesson planning and report writing but I imagine it won't be long until it can also help personalize education. And that is just one company. I can imagine what some of the bigger education companies have coming. It's pretty cool.

7/14/2023 11:16:34Here is a series of prompts I used to explore the idea of reading level specific story generation:
-Could you make an early reader story for me? Can you make the main character Luke? Luke has the ability to fly. He is a 6 year old super hero. The super villain Crime Man is causing problems in the city. This reader is working on cvc words and short a and short e vowel sounds.
-I like the story, but it needs to be simpler still for this reader. He is reading at a DRA level A.
-Can you do this same story in only one or two syllable words as much as possible?
---Then the last prompt was to rewrite ChatGPT's last version of the story myself to meet the phonetic goals I had in mind, paste it in the prompt and ask ChatGPT to generate a new story based on what I submitted. This yielded better results.
Just that text for emergent readers is problematic, in general. The big publishers don't do a great job. It is hard to make engaging stories that avoid the more complicated phonics patterns of English. A level D book usually is long vowel mayhem for a level A reader. I am hopeful that, with refinement, I can chip away at this problem.

I read an article recently that wrote about how you can use ChatGPT to write better prompts that you can then in turn ask it. I did this to refine my favorite prompts so far from taking this course. The prompt I used was "Based off this conversation brainstorm the best uses of AI I have come up with so far and/or hope to use in your situation soon as a K-12 public education art teacher." But something like "Write me an effective prompt for ChatGPT that explains INSERT YOUR INQUIRY HERE" could work as well.

6/12/2023 15:40:16One of my very favorite prompts was to write a 500 word essay on space exploration at Christopher Columbus. This was not only humorous but also compared space travel with sailing a ship. The other fun prompt that I used was to show my son how ChatGPT worked. I told it to write a song using my son's name about football to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb. The problem with this prompt was that it wrote about soccer, not American football, but it was still fun.I really enjoyed this class and have learned so much. Thank you!

5/30/2023 21:30:291. how can I use AI as a teacher
2. Create five multiple choice questions and answers to cover the main ideas of this article:
3.Was brexit AI generated? (this was silly, but some of the silly questions are interesting).
4.Overall example. I asked AI this first: Write a four sentence response that praises a student's thoroughness and attention to detail. However, to practice with the tool I kept adjusting the response with the following parameters: Rewrite that with more direct language, rewrite that with less praise, rewrite as three sentences, Rewrite at a slightly easier reading level
5. Rewrite this as a 250 word graduate essay response:
6. write at a 5th grade level
7. How do I help support someone having an emotional day?
8. Ask me 7 questions about my neighbor. Wait for me to answer each question before asking the next. After that write a 500 word thriller story.
I am currently appreciating the language adjustability of AI, and there are many facets to this. At the student level this can be writing support, reading level support, adjusting the writing level of things like instructions, and help with questions. As a teacher I appreciate the creation of quizzes as an exit ticket to assigned reading, which can be graded automatically in Canvas (our platform) but also by AI, but also as a way to help students guide their note-taking by focusing on main ideas. I also like the approach of having students focus more on identifying quality, reliable sources to feed into AI to generate responses, but also edit that result.
