DesignThese assessments range between 5-8 questions, with a combination of multiple choice, technology enhanced, and open response (teacher scored) items. All texts are within the recommended grade level band, and all tasks are linked to grade level standards. Some assessments may include some non-prerequisite standards. This is indicated in the assessment blueprints. Additionally, not all prerequisite standards are assessed across these formative assessments; educators should look to curriculum-embedded tasks/assessments to gather formative data about student learning on those non-assessed prerequisite standards.

UsePer the BPS Covid-19 Remote Learning Expectations (May 4, 2020), teachers are expected to administer at least two of these prerequisite-aligned formative assessments in both ELA and Math by the end of the 19-20 school year. As these assessments are meant to provide educators with information on student learning, educators should implement the assessments that best align with the prerequisite standards of focus during the period of remote learning. In doing so, educators will be able to reflect on what students have learned, identify where there is unfinished learning to be addressed, and make instructional decisions.

Schools may already be assessing growth during the remote learning period by giving assessments on standards covered instructionally. The 2019-2020 BPS Prerequisite Formative assessments can complement that work by providing a novel context for students to apply the knowledge, skills, and understanding they have developed. As these assessments are administered in the Illuminate platform, the data from these assessments is tied to students and will be available to inform summer learning support for students and SY20-21 planning.

Review Assessment ExpectationsAll students should complete the BPS Prerequisite Formative Assessments with the exception of first-year EL students or students who take the MCAS-Alt or ACCESS-Alt given their IEP. Educator teams should exercise professional judgement regarding participation for students who are ELD 1 or 2. Educators should determine whether accommodations such as a bilingual dictionary, text-to-speech, human read-aloud, human scribe, or other EL accommodations outlined in the MCAS accommodations manual would provide sufficient modification to enable an ELD level 1 or 2 student to fully participate. However, teachers of students who are ELD 1 and 2 are encouraged to use formative assessments specific to language development.

Review and Select Assessments1) Review the test blueprints for your grade level in order to determine which assessments best align to the standards of focus during the remote learning period.
2) On the grade level tab, use the link in the title of the assessment to open the assessment in Illuminate.
3) Read and complete the assessment yourself by downloading the Teacher Test Booklet (Details--> Materials).
4) Review scoring guidance for all open-response (teacher scored) items. Are there any computer use (symbols, notation) that students will need to answer questions?

Review online assessment administration1) Students can access the assessment by navigating to illuminate.online, entering their BPS email ("Student Login") and the Access Code for the assessment (provided on the grade level tab of this document). This can be shared via Google Classroom or other communication.

2) Teachers with experience setting up assessment administrations may opt to set up their own Quick Codes for an assessment, in which case they can share out a link to their classroom that takes students directly to the assessment (students only enter their email to begin).

Prepare to administer1) Determine how you will schedule the assessment for your class, ideally during synchronous learning time so that you can monitor students and answer questions.
2) Review student IEPs and make a plan to implement student accommodations. Each assessment has an access code for text-to-speech.
3) Review the resources for the Live Proctoring feature in Illuminate so that you know how you can monitor student progress during the assessment and ensure they complete the assessment.
4) Consider how you will create a supportive assessment environment with positive framing and relaxation strategies to reduce student stress and anxiety. This could be leading students in a short stretching exercise that includes deep breaths to stimulate the relaxation response as well as communicating support using positive language: "Take some deep breaths, go with the flow, give it your best, and show what you know!"
5) Consider asking student to write out their work before entering it online. Students can take a picture of their writing and send it to you to demonstrate their thinking.
