Háskóli Íslands and Fræðslumiðstöð atvinnulivs31/3 - 4/4My purpose is to learn about the Icelandic counseling program as well as to experience how counseling is provided in elementary school and at Fræðslumiðstøð atvinnulivs in Reykjavík.I am hoping to be able to experience a different program than we have here and trough these experiences bring back handy information, which hopefully can contribute to our counselling system and also to my education.I hope that my hosts will be interested to hear about our counseling system, and to hear all about our beautyful Islands. I will gladly participate in any kind of talk or teach in.Together with Julianna I went on a Vala visit in Reykjavík, Iceland. We had the oppertunity to visit different counseling centers at all levels. This painted a clear picture of the very organized counseling that is offered in Iceland. While organizing counseling trough a umbrella organization there is a red thread througt counseling. I do believe, that we in the Faroes, should focus on developing Life Long learning centres, where people can get their skills evaluated, so that they have the oppertunity to go to school again and graduate within their field of expertise. r

Eva Rut Gunnlaugsdóttir, Háskóli ÍslandsMalmö Högskola31/3 - 4/4To see and learn about the "Studie- och yrkesvägledarutbildningen" in Malmö University. Hopefully to learn about what is similar between the program there and in Iceland. See the differense and if they are doing something that we could also be doing here.I am hopeful to get some knowledge about the education of career counseling in Sweden, what their job opportunities are and to see what is different and what is the same. I will be happy to share my knowledge about career counseling in Iceland and I am going to do the best I can to answer all their questions.I had five great days in Malmö, mon-wed I spent with first year students and got the opportunity to work some more on my interviewing skills. I learned that the CGC program is quite diffrent from our program in Iceland, I really liked that they only take one course at a time. The highlight of my visit was my last day when I got to visit Malmö Kommuns vägledningscenter. There I got a good oversight over the CGC work in Sweden. I enjoyed my time in Sweden.

Háskóli Íslands and Fræðslumiðstöð atvinnulivs
31/3 - 4/4 -2014To learn about the structure of counseling at various levels. To see laws and regulations about counseling and the implementations of them. To see how you educate counselors. To learn about economical details around counseling.
We are in need of structuring counseling at all levels in the Faroe Islands and to bridge between the different institutions in order to offer help-seekers helpful counseling. As our societies have many similarities, I hope to learn a lot from your experiences in counseling.
I have been a teacher for 22 years and know the Faroese educational system well. The last 3 years I've studies BA in social sciense. Perhaps I can offer some knowledge about the Faroese society and education. Just back from a very interesting VALA visit in Iceland. We visited: 1. Simenntun Mimir, unbrella organisation for CGC in Iceland, 2. Álfhoósskólan in Kópavógur,CGC department for elementary school, 3. Fræðslumiðstøð Atvinnulífsins, FA/Education and Training Service Centre in Selfoss, 4. Fjølsmiðjan in Kópavógur, workcentre with CGC for maladapted young people, 5. Vinnustofnin, unemployment office in Reykjavik, 6. HÍ, University of Iceland, CGC department, 7. HÍ lectures in CGC, met pupils and lecturers. When comparing the Icelandic system with our counseling system in the Faroe Islands, I noticed that we in the Faroes are in need of the unbrella organization and the "bridges" between the different institutions that have some kind of counseling in the Faroe Islands.

To explore what similarities there are about career counselling between Finland and Denmark: learn generally about career counselling in Denmark. I hope I´ll get familiarized about Denmarks school/education system.Hopefully I could bring a new ideas and new perspective to our educators and students in our University. I can share my knowledge of finnish school/education system and clarify the status of counselling in it. My visit in Denmark was absolutely brilliant! I had the most interested discussions with teachers of VIA and with students in counselling courses. I visited one of Aarhus counselling centres and they show me how the counselling is organized in practise. It was really instructive to see personal counselling in different language! School system in Denmark is almost the same than Finland, but still it was very eye-opening to observe the differencies. I think the biggest difference is counsellors working environment: in Finland there is counsellor in every school but in Denmark counsellors work in counselling centres. Another difference is counsellors education, but I think there is pretty much same contents in both studytypes. All the way visit was great and I had such a nice time in Aarhus.

Hanne Heikkinen, University of Eastern FinlandUniversity of Iceland 24/3 - 4/4 -2014To take part to career counselling and guidance courses in University of Iceland, and see what kind of counselling education is arrenged there. To find out what does career counselling mean to Icelandic society and what are the biggest challenges there. Also, to get to visit in some Icelandic schools, so I could see what is counselling there like, and see what is different compared to Finland.I would like to broaden my views and see how is counselling organized outside Finland's borders. I would also like to see what kind of things are kept important in counselling and education in Iceland.I can elucidate what includes to counselling studies in finnish university, and what themes are kept important in our studies. In addition, I can tell about counsellors tasks and job opportunities in Finland. My visit in Iceland was a great experience and I'm glad that I took part to vala. I took part to CGC courses in University of Iceland, and it was really nice to see what kind of things they learn, and what issues do they discuss about. I also got interesting material (researches, reports) from courses, so I can use those in my own studies in Finland. In addition, I visited elementary school in Kopavogur, workcenter for young people in Kopavogur, and unemployment office in Reykjavik, and it was really interesting to see how couselling is organized there. I noticed that the challenges in counselling are quite same as we have in Finland. Of course I had also time to see Iceland's beautiful nature too; I hiked in Thingvellir National Park and swam in a hot spring and blue lagoon.

Aino Saukkosaari, University of Eastern FinlandStockholm University, Sweden5/5-9/5 2014To participate in counselling courses in Stockholm University. In that way my purpose is to compare counseling studies organised in Finland and in Sweden. Another purpose of the exchange is to compare the position of counseling expertise: are career counsellors appreciated in the Swedish society. I would like to learn new things about Swedish education system, counselling education and research. I'm interested to know what are the main issues in counselling in Sweden and what causes the major challenges.I would like to join in the discussion about the organisational and educational differences in the studies of counseling arranged in Stockholm University and University of Eastern Finland. I can share my knowledge of the state of counseling in Finland (job opportunities, general duties etc.)I'm glad that I participated in VALA, since the exchange in Stockholm university was very interesting and rewarding. I was happy that I could attend lessons. Surprisingly I understood nearly everything even though the teaching was in Swedish. Now I know which are the similarities and differences in guidance and counseling between Finland and Sweden. I had a warm welcome and the schedule was organized very well. I enjoyed the discussion with students, teachers and career counselors working in different places. I had time to explore Stockholm as well.

Rut Kaliebsdóttir, University of Iceland. Stockholm University, Sweden.8/9 -19/9 2014My purpose is to add to my career counseling knowledge by participating in career counseling courses at Stockholm’s University and visit workplaces. I would like to get a deep insight into the Swedish system and experience how the program is arranged in Sweden. Explore the similarities and differences between the two programs. In addition I would like to get a deeper insight into the Swedish policy for the future in career counseling and learn about the Swedish work market. We can always learn from each other and I would like to bring back knowledge that might be useful here in Iceland as well. The main issues that career counselors might be facing in Sweden might be different from the main issues here. I grew up in Sweden so I already have a feeling for the different school systems and emphasizes but I would like to get an updated idea about it and from a career counselor's perspective. In addition I would like to hear about how the youth is doing in Sweden now e.g is the dropout rate high or low. Iceland and Sweden might be facing slightly different main problems and by sharing our knowledge we might know better how to handle them. Personally I would also like to get an overview of job opportunities in Sweden.I can present and give information about the educational program and system in Iceland, main policy issues and hot topics that career counselors are facing and will be fighting for here in the future. Answer any inquiries that might come up and present general information about Iceland.I had an amazing and pleasant time in Sweden at Stockholm University. Everywhere I went I was received with a warm welcome. I meet amazing teachers, students and people. My program was interesting and well organized; I was able to get a good insight into aspects of our subject from a new and interesting angle. Furthermore I got a good insight into the Swedish system. I got the chance to practice my interviewing skills and I participated and listened to very interesting lectures about ethics, diagnoses and interviewing methods. I got a very good and informative presentation about the career- and guidance program at Stockholm University. Furthermore I got the chance to visit four work places, an elementary school, a university, an adult educational center and a directorate of labour. There I meet the working career- and guidance counselors and at all these places I got very good and informative information about the institution and their operation. I also had time to explore the wonderful and beautiful city, Stockholm. I got answers to all my questions. I wish I could have stayed longer; two weeks went by too fast.

Jessica Gustafsson Stockholms UniversitetUniversity of Iceland7/9-13/9-2014My purpose is to visit University of Iceland is to understand how the Guidance counsellors are educated in Iceland. How many differences are there and is there anything different in Iceland, that they might do better, then in Sweden. I´m also curios to learn more about Iceland’s take on lifelong learning.

I hope to get a very insightful week, where I learn more about the education system in Iceland,
and see how much difference there is. I also hope to get a look into how lifelong
learning looks like in schools and on a workplace around Iceland. Is lifelong learning
something that is nourished or not in a normal work environment

I have been
working as guidance counsellor during my own education and have some insight of
how it is to work at a gymnasium. I also have experience working with children from 10-12 years old and adults. My first paper was about lifelong learning for adults in adult education (gymnasium level) and how different it is between cities in Sweden due to the decentralization of our school system. I can talk about these things, and if there’s any interest I could do a presentation.

I had a very nice time in Reykjavik. I learnd alot by visiting alot of diffrent places and I learnd about the system of adult learning in Iceland. I was suposed to have 2 lectures on the university. But the first one was in Iclandic so I did not understand anything. The second one was in English and Icelandic. I could ubderstand more and that was a little better.
I aslo had time to explore Reykjavik and souronding areas so I am very happy with that! A very nice tripp and I am glad I went.

Linda Forselius, Stockholm UniversityUniversity of Iceland22/9-26/9- 2014I want to know more about lifelong learning and see how you can work with it. I hope to learn about iceland university and hw the school looks like. I also want to learn more about different school systems and see what difference there is. I've been working as career counsellor and can share how I work and material that I've been working with. I had a very good time om Iceland and it was really interesting to see the differens between the two programs. I found it really intresting to meet students and career counsellors and to learn more how you can work with career & guidance counselling and too see differens perspectives. It was fun too meet a career & guidance counsellor at elemantary school and too see how they work. The differences between Sweden and Iceland is quite big but also similar, wich is interesting and makes you think about your own job and how you can take different perspectives in your work.

Marika Marttinen, JAMK University of Applied SciencesMalmö Högskola22/9-26/9-2014My aim is to enhance my career guidance skills, learn more about the Swedish school system and the role of counselling in it. I am also interested in study counsellor education in Sweden.I would like to learn more about the similarities and differences of the Nordic countries in guidance and counselling. I am looking forward to discussions and networking.I have worked as a teacher in comprehensive schools and vocational institutes in Finland for years and therefore I have valuable knowledge about the current situation.I had a lovely week in Malmö! I had a warm welcome and everything was arranged nicely. I didn't know much about the Swedish school system and the counselling studies in Sweden before visiting Malmö but during the week I learned a lot. I attended interesting seminars and lectures regarding, for example, gender, future and job markets, testing and methodology. The schedule was really good and I was able to meet some of the people working in study and career counselling in Malmö university. They offered me an insight into working as a counsellor in the university setting.

Elisa Blomberg, Stockholm University
Høgskolen i Bergen/Bergen University College
8/9-12/9-2014
I want to
know about how to study to counseler in Norway and participate in
some courses. I want to know how they value counseling, how they work
and where they work in Norway. Thereafter I would like to compare
this with the knowledge I have about counseling in Sweden. At our
University, for instance, we don't say that we give advice but we
give counseling. In Norway they have a course that is called
”Rådgivning” which means ”giving advice” in swedish. Maybe
there only is a difference in the meaning of the word though
norwegian is similar to swedish. And if you translate the swedish
word for advice into english, it givs both the word advice and the
word counseling.
I will share my experience and thoughts from Norway and their counseling with the
students at my institution.
I can share the knowledge and experience I have about counseling in Sweden.
I had a very pleasant visit at Høgskolan i Bergen! So I am grateful and happy that I got the opportunity to this student exhange. There are both similarities and differences in comparing the counseling in Norway and Sweden. For example, you cannot study career counseling as a bachelor degree in Norway. There you are often a teacher with some further education in counseling. Thereafter you most often work as both a teacher and a counselor in the same school. In Sweden you only are and work as a counselor in one or several schools. The question I had about calling the counselor ʺadviserʺ, I got answered. They told me this is an old name for counselors, but is used today even though it may cause misunderstandings. In Norway, as well in Sweden, the counselor should not give advice. But the word ʺRådgivareʺ (eng. ʺadviserʺ) opens up for misunderstandings. In Norway they have a discussion whether or not to change the name of the ʺadviserʺ to "counselor". At the Høgskolan i Bergen they want the change as soon as possible. The role of the counselor looks pretty much the same as in Sweden. In Norway, but not in Sweden, they have a course for youths which is about taking decisions about your future (education and/or work) and self-knowledge.
I experienced that Sweden has more counselors than Norway. For example we often have a counselor at every institution at University as well as counselors at Career Centers at the Universities and Colleges. In Norway they do not. They have counselors at the Universities' and Colleges' Career Centers. There are more to tell, please give me a mail if you want to know more or have any questions. 18/9-20/9 2014
I would like to learn about the career and counselling program in the Faroe islands, the view of life long learning and what place student counselling has i the school system and how the school system works in general. My hope is to experince differances and similarities in the way of organizing the program and the view of study and career guidance and to discuss them with students and teachers in the Faroe islands. I will be in the beginning of my second year in the career and counselling program in Sweden and I am looking forward to share the experiences I have from my time during the program in Stockholm.I really enjoyed my time on the Faroe islands and got very well taken care of by everyone I met and especially Hanna who I had the pleasure to stay with during the days at the university. The lessons were very interesting and I learned a lot about the Faroe-society and the welfare system that affects the career counselling and the education. For exampel the education for career counselling and guidance is master degree that is possible for people who have a relevant education to take. Almost all counselors work as both teachers and counselors. I also learned a lot talking to the other students in the class.

Lilly Staf, Stockholm University
University of Iceland2/3-13/3 2015A two week long intensive and thorough examination of the field of career counseling in Iceland. This will be done by taking part in the courses offered at the university as well as visiting organizations within the Icelandic counseling system.Hopefully I will broaden my views on career counseling and after the student mobility program contribute with new perspectives, knowledge and ideas to Stockholm University . As a mother of two young children I would also like to inspire other parents at the Stockholm University to take advantage of the many possibilities to participate in international study exchange programs. I will happily participate in discussions with other students, teachers and career counselors. I would like to share my knowledge and experiences of career counseling in Sweden and to discuss the differences and similarities between Sweden and Iceland. If my host has an interest in a presentation of any kind I would gladly prepare and perform one.

Malin Gustafsson, Stockholm University
University of Iceland3/3-10/3 2015
My purpose is to get an overview of the Career counseling field on Iceland. I would like to see how the master programme at University of Iceland is formed, and what the students think of the programme/structure/courses etc. The purpose it to get an insight and another perspective than you usually get when reading about something. To get a broader picture, I would like to visit other organizations related to the counseling filed as well.Hopefully I will gain more knowledge about University of Iceland in general, and the student’s thoughts and experiences specifically. I want to learn more about the career counseling field on Iceland. I wish to compare and contrast the information I receive with Sweden.I hope to share my knowledge about career counseling in Sweden and by getting to know people, have interesting discussions. I am thinking about writing a small report after the exchange, which will be accessible for my host.Together with Lilly Staf I went to University of Iceland. We had the privilege of meeting the director of the Student Counselling services at the University, and she told us about the organisation, the students, work-shops they had, their exchange with other countries and so on. We spoke with several students at the Masters' programme in Career Counselling and they gave us information about the programme and the courses they had. The main difference from Sweden is the level of the programme (bachelor in Sweden, master in Iceland) the fact they have several courses at the same time, and they have less internships/practical periods on Iceland. We spoke to one of the counsellors who took care of the practical sections in the programme, about the programme's structurea and courses, and got some more information as well as "completed the picture" of the programme we had got earlier. We also went to the Education and Training Service Center and got information about Iceland's labourmarket and employment and how they work with adult education and validation in a lifelong learning perspective. It was fascinating how they worked with validation. Iceland have Lifelong leraning-centres all around Iceland, and when doing evaluations of the work at the centres, a lot of participants were very satisfied with the service. Another fascinating thing was the work with career counselling in workplaces and the strive for marketing the career counselling service. It was a pleasure beeing at Iceland and meet all these lovely people and explore a beautiful country.

Mardon Eikeland, Einar Eikeland, Marta Lomheim, Bergen University CollegeUniversity of Faroe Islands5/3-7/3 2015We would like to learn about career and counseling program in the Faroe Islands. The society is in change. Traditional way of living, fisheries, is no longer the main income for people. Similar to countryside in Norway, the young people, specially the girls, are moving to denser populated areas, in this case abroad. Counseling in this context, will be interesting and relevant. Which dreams and opportunities do young people have in this situation? We are also looking forward to experience the Faroe Islands culturally and gastronomically.Share experiences and exchange counseling and career management methods.Share experiences and exchange counseling and career management methods.

Óli Páll Wolles, University of Faroe Islands. Studying 1 year part time post-graduate degree for life-long guidance http://setur.fo/en/Agnesfrids Gymnasium, Malmö7/4-17/4-2015I would like to study and experience how professional counseling is working in Sweden. Especially I would like to study and experience how the connection is between administration and counselling - also regarding special classes with peoples with disabilities. I choose to visit Sweden as I know Sweden has a long tradition for professional school counseling. Sweden also has special programs for people with special needs and disabilities within the traditional upper secondary school system. This has my special interest as we probably will start providing education for peoples with special needs and disabilities within the regular Upper secondary schools in Faroe Islands, starting next school year (august 15).As I have been teaching Faroese language and litterature as well as world religions at upper secondary school besides my part time job as school counselor for many years I can offer general information on Faroe Islands - society, language and culture. Also I can share my counseling experiences.During my stay in Malmo I mainly follow an experienced counsellor at Agnesfrids Gymnasium. She also organized a visit to school counselors at two other schools in Malmo, Malmo Idrottsgymnasium and Valdemarsro gymnasium, which both have special classes for people with disabilities.During my stay in Malmo I followed my counseling mentor in her job, discussing different ways to handle cases, attended meetings regarding classes and meetings with individual students and their family as well, giving me a good insight in the very professional work at Agnesfrids. During my stay I also had the opportunity to talk to other staff at school, i.e. director and social worker regarding their job and different ways to organize counseling. A social worker student also was in practicum at Agnesfrids Gymnasium at the same time, and we had the opportunity to discuss differrent problems regarding counseling and social problems. During my stay I also got some insight on how they were working at the Special classes for peoples with disabilty, thus preparing my organizasion of the very first class for students with disabilities which started august 2015 at my home school, Studentaskúlin og HF-skeiðið í Eysturoy, Faroe Islands. All in all I found my visit to Malmo very informative and inspiring. Thanks.

Annika N. við Skipá, University of the Faroe Islands Ingrid Jespersens Gymnasieskole og UU Tårnby, Copenhagen7/4-17/4-2015I am interested to see how the counselling is provided in this Danish school and also how the counsellors from elementary school and gymnasium co-operate in order to prepare their students for the transitions in the educational system. Furthermore I want to add to my counselling knowledge as I have only been a school counsellor for three years During this practicum I expect to get ideas and inspiration which I can benefit from in my own job as a school counsellor. This is also an excellent opportunity to observe other career counsellors. My counselling hosts have already let me know that they expect a presentation of the guidance and career counselling in the Faroe Islands, so I'll try to describe the situation as well as possible.   During my two weeks' practicum, I had the opportunity to see the Danish counselling system from elementary school and all the way to university level, which was very interesting and instructive. I visited a few schools and UU centers and I got a good and broad insight in the counselling area attending staff meetings and different counselling sessions with students and parents, thereby being able to observe other CGC professionals "in action". I got useful ideas and inspiration which I benefit from in my current job as a counsellor, and I will say that this stay has been a brilliant experience to me.

15-19/8 2016I am hoping to learn more about the use and
implementation of ICT in guidance.I am not so
well educated in that area and truly feel need
of more learning n the subject.
I would like to get theorethical knowledge and practical
exercises to enhance furher understanding of the use
of ICT in my future work as guidance counsellor.
I could offer a description of how we stand in our
studyprogramme on ICT and to tell about the swe
dish bachelor and guidance program.
The week of the Summercourse gave me an insight in the opportunities that lies in ICT regarding new abilities to reach and broaden accessability to good guidance for a wider range of people. The new theoretical frame work was interesting especially for its capability to be used in different occupational settings,  as well as comparing studies and work with other students. It was also a lovely town, and such a beatiful part of Finland.

Anna Schneller, Aarhus UniversityIAEVG International Conference in Finland (Jyväskylä)11/11-14/11 2024I hope that at the IAEVG conference, I will gain more knowledge about the field of guidance and counselling and how different countries approach guidance. Furthermore, I look forward to meet other individuals working in this field, where we can engage in professional dialogues and share knowledge across borders.Hopefully I will get some new knowledge and inspiration which will allow me to bring the insights back to my workplace. Furthermore, I hope that the conference and the professional presentations will better equip me for my work tasks. At the conference, I had conversations with other people who works with guidance, where I was able to highlight the research projects I am working on in collaboration with my colleagues from Aarhus University. The IAEVG International Conference gave me an insight in different countries work with guidance. Furthermore it gave me a broader insight into the field of guidance. It gave me a lot of new inspirations to my own work and knowledge that will help me to have professionals conversations with others about guidance and counselling. Especially the presentations about Finlands work with Life Long Guidance started some reflections on how we could work more with that in Denmark. As a student, it was a great experience to listen to and be introduced to the work of so many skilled researchers and practitioners in the field of guidance.
