But we don’t test coloured boxers for deafness and they can be and many are. Why not start doing that test with all then. To care about the integrity of the breed includes caring about the temperament that makes them such great (and multi-talented) working dogs. | I am a professional ethicist and a (non-practicing) veterinarian. Our current code of ethics with regard to white boxers is incoherent. The ABC should EITHER: 1. allow whites to be bred and to compete in conformation events, and the ethics code should encourage breeders to have all white pups BAER'd before placing them (since so many deaf whites wind up in rescues) OR 2. take a strong and effective stand against flashy-to-flashy breedings, where most whites come from. My understanding is that about 5% of white boxers are bilaterally deaf, and another 20% or so unilaterally deaf, based on the genes involved. If a 5% chance of being bilaterally deaf is a significant enough unsoundness to keep whites out of breeding programs, then we should take a stand against producing them. And they shouldn't be in breeding programs if they can't be shown. So pick one approach: otherwise the ABC appears to disregard genetics. There should be an addition to the code of ethics that allows health tested whites to be bred to genetically plain boxers. We have people in this country doing this already with most not being health tested. The AKC registers all colors and they do not limit registration. As the breed club we should be leading the way and set an example by health, temperament, and using “correct” boxers to further the breed and educate the public. White Boxers have carried bloodlines of some of the top winning dogs of our time and their genetic contribution has been lost. These dogs were culled for reasons that no longer exist. This does not have to be studied the work has already been done, look to the science and vote. It will either be approved or not. If approved revise the code of ethics to reflect it.
