How are captains chosen? It varies by season and team level. In the Fall, with less time to work with, the coaches select girl and boy captains for varsity from the prior spring. In the spring, with more time and access to players the selection process for varsity captains incorporates voting from players themselves.
14
How do coaches make tourney roster decisions? It's usually not easy for coaches. Roster building is a multi-step and multi-coach process that coaches put a fair amount of time into together, where the hardest part is figuring out which kids each season are 'on the bubble' but need to play on a lower level team, based on the overall picture. Principle #1: size => we need enough players to make it thru multiple games, but we also want to keep the rosters small enough that players can get in a rhythm and not sit out too many points between shifts on the field. This top principle is why we really need availability info from players so we know our effective numbers. Also experience has shown that in general we need less older and physically stronger players on the upper teams than younger and physically less developed players on the lower teams. Principle #2: A first => we start by trying to optimize our top team, so we can best compete for the highest level, then we work on each of the lower level teams in turn. Principle #3: seniority => here's where we start to get into multiple gray areas -- we do factor in how old players are and how many seasons they've played, generally putting older kids on higher level teams, but we definitely can't follow a strict seniority system. Principle #4: athleticism => years ago, when we were smaller, it was so much easier and we used to be able to put pretty much all our older players on the top teams, but these days we're factoring in both a single upcoming tourney and the longer range growth of the team and trying to give more athletic kids playing time on the upper teams. Principle #5: singletons => we try to avoid having a single older kid play on a lower team or a single younger player on a higher team. Principle #6: attitude => how hard players work in practice and show up consistently and communicate with coaches responsibly can help tip the balance when choosing between 2 otherwise equal players. Principle #7: handlers => coaches also factor in whether the teams have enough handlers, with deep throwing skills to pull and huck and also short throwing skills and good judgement to make smart throws and maintain possession in games. Principle #8: friends => we do try to keep kids together who know each other and perhaps practice together but there's a reason this principle is ranked lower, because by the time you deal with all the other factors, sometimes we just can't keep friends together.
15
How do tournament rosters get finalized and communicated? It's s multi-step process.
- Step #1 is players fill in their availability on the editable AVAIL page of this MAIN gDoc.
- Step #2 is coaches copy from AVAIL onto the MAIN page (which players cannot edit). Note that we do have some tourneys where we ask for availability from a larger number of players than we actually end up needing, eg Mountain Invite. In those cases, players should refer to the rosters listed on the MAIN page to see if coaches need them to practice and play or not.

How do weather cancellations work ?We all know Colorado weather can change quickly. Our policy is to assume that all games and practices are ON, unless we proactively cancel (and reschedule for another day). On any game day or practice, the coaches & captains will make a decision around 2p and communicate out by 2:30p, via this MAIN page and email.
18
How do players get to off-campus games?Short answer: determined by their parents

Long answer: Monarch Ultimate (coaches and managers) do not transport players or direct transportation. Parents determine how their kids get to games. If parents choose to, they can self-serve to organize carpools and can choose to take advantage of the MAIN gDoc, where each week the ‘Rides’ tabs will get updated with info on opponent location.
19
What are ALL players on teams responsible to do EARLY in the week during league game weeks ?Short answer: use this MAIN gDoc and provide coaches info on your availability. Do this EVERY week for EVERY game !

Long answer: Coaches know that every week there are going to be players who cannot attend games for some reason, but we’re not mind readers so you must TELL us, so we can re-balance rosters, as needed. Find your name in one of the Games tabs and just tell us in the ‘Attending Game?’ column whether you’re playing and your plan for getting there, if it’s off-campus. If you need a ride (from parents organizing carpools), just say that, so organizing parents can see that.
20
For parents who have players in off-campus games what are they responsible to do during game weeks ?Short answer: self-organize carpools and contribute as drivers, if you can

Long answer: Monarch Ultimate (coaches and managers) do not transport players or direct transportation. However, parents can self-serve to organize carpools, using the ‘Rides’ tabs of Main gDoc. It’s pretty self explanatory how you list yourself as a driver and how many kids you can carry and slot names of kids into the cars etc. If you have any questions call Tam, 303.870.7330.

How do I communicate that I will be absent or late to a practice or game?

720.526.2955
If you’re going to miss a game, the easiest way to communicate that is to enter a “No” into the AVAIL tab of this document. If you know 24+ hours in advance that you need to miss a practice or game, you can shoot an email to MohiUltCoaches@gmail.com, and that will get forwarded to ALL coaches, so players don't have to figure out which coach to alert. If something comes up within 24 hours of a practice or game and you can’t attend, send a text to 720.526.2955 (be sure to tell us your name at the start of the text). The message will get forwarded to all coaches.
