Until then, I wrote niche dark romance that did not court much more than a tiny audience and earned me on average about $400 a month.

I was worried about being late to the game….but anyone can do well if they have a good book and they get the word out. There's tons of info available for free about how to promote and run your business, and it is a business. I expect that if I continue at this pace, that I'll approach full-time status by year end, and am having a ball doing it.

You may want to add that level of distinction. It'd definitely not a traditional publisher, but not quite self-publishing (although closer to that.)

It was due in part to reading about Hugh's story of self-publishing. I figured I'd give it a shot for fun.

I wrote my goal on a piece of paper that literally said "make $100". That was my goal....total. I now have months where I make over $2,000 per MONTH.

I only publish non-fiction at this point, but I hope to branch out someday.

Love the website, and I can't wait to contribute any way I can help.

Therefore, I did not expect to make any money off the first book but rather use it as a loss-leader to all the rest of the novels.

That it quietly makes money while the second book is in production, without a lot of promotion on my part, is unexpected.I believe my dedication to the story, professional editing and having enticing cover art is paying off.

I formed my own imprint. I am having a blast.

All 3 traditionally published books are with Thomas & Mercer (Amazon). I do not have an agent. I have negotiated each contract on my own and there is nothing standard about these contracts. After I turn in my next two contracted books, I plan to self-publish my next thriller series.

Because my two non-fiction books are for children and have coloring pages in them, I sell most of them in print form (fewer as e-books) I sell a ton of them. :) This year I'm moving into fiction with a series and while my focus will be on e-books, I won't be neglecting print editions of my self-published works. Print isn't dead and I'd love to see print options for self-publishing explored more.

From my perspective, it's okay to start small and do everything yourself, branching out when you have the funds to do it. I made my initial covers, revamping them as I had the money to reinvest.

I also changed genre before finding some success, so I wouldn't be afraid to try something new!

The survey data would be a little more specific in "currently traditionally published", "total traditionally published", "currently self-published" and "total self-published."

I suggest this because I doubt I'm the only one who unpublishes some titles for a time or permanently (especially running four pen names - one of which accounts for 95+% of my income). Plus you have a great deal of erotica writers that had Amazon and other platforms put the book into draft or blocked status for reworking for content guidelines, even if it is just the title that is objectionable. So last year's income for those writers could be based on 100 books, 25 of which are presently unpublished. (Only erotica writers have this problem, I imagine.)

Conversely, the constant upheaval in this wild and wooly (ha!) self-publishing environment is a bit unnerving, and the volatility of my sales makes it hard not to feel anxious.

I don't make what anyone would call a full-time living yet, but I do write full-time because I'm in a financial position to do so. I'm confident I'll get there.

Most of the self-published books that I read are as strictly professional as those of the Big 5... or is it 4... 3... 2...

It's a whole other to be able to market yourself, even if you happen to possess skill to market for others.

I'm still enjoying the process, though.

But as I've gotten a better handle on that work load, and on my general work flow, it has all become much more manageable.

I don't complain about the hours. I love every single second of them, even when I'm going on only a few hours of sleep. The fact that I control my own success, that I'm the captain of my own ship, means more to me than nearly anything else.

I used to be a cubicle slave, working hours that weren't entirely dissimilar to what I do now, but still received the routine pat on the back, and the same amount deposited into my bank account every month. Now, when I put forth that same effort, those same hours, I get the satisfaction of even more feedback from readers. I wake up to new emails and messages telling me how I've touched someone's life whom I've never met before. I get remittance advices that blow away what I was making as a public accountant. And when I need a day off, whether to just clear my head, or to spend time with loved ones, I can take it without guilt that someone else has to pick up my slack.

Self publishing has changed my life in drastic ways, and I'll always be eternally grateful for the opportunities it has afforded me.
