The NCHC was established in 2021 as a dedicated space to care for refugees in Edmonton. We provide full service primary care to patients for up to 2 years after they arrive in Canada, and then work to transition them to their permanent medical home in the community. We currently assist government-assisted refugees but hope to expand our services to privately sponsored and refugee claimants in the future. Our team is composed of family physicians, specialists, NPs, LPNs, health navigators, a behavioural health consultant, MOAs, and an operations manager. We also have other allied health services who come to work on site, including a physiotherapist and psychologist.

Edmonton welcomes up to 1,200 government-assisted refugees annually, and much of our work is directed to diagnosing and and treating nutritional, genetic, chronic, and infectious diseases that may not be as common for other family physicians to see. We endeavour to see new arrivals for an intake appt where we provide a team approach to assessment, treatment, coordination of services/referrals, and follow up. Screening intake investigations are completed, and then patients are brought back to see us in 6-8 weeks if there are health issues to follow up on or investigations that need review.

For more information about this horizontal, including learning objectives, pre-readings, and resident responsibilities, click here. Please read this prior to contacting us.
