Quantitative Methods, DEI, Neurobiology
Research in the Clinical Research on Externalizing and Addiction Mechanisms (C.R.E.A.M.) Lab focuses on the etiology of addiction and broader externalizing psychopathology using electroencephalogram and ecological momentary assessment.
I currently have particular interests in my work on within- versus between-subject models of psychopathology as it pertains to where substance use fits within the broader HiTOP model, as well as my EEG/ERP work on reward processing and inhibitory control.

Personality, Revisions, and DEI
Personality and mood assessment; psychometrics and factor analysis; externalizing psychopathology; bipolar spectrum disorders
Application review focuses on our alignment in research interests. However, I do not require that students be focused on any one single career goal (i.e., I welcome applications even if working in academia is not your end career goal). I have information that I share with applicants on my review process, so please contact me at kstanto1@uwyo.edu for this information!

Quantitative, Measure Development, DEI
Hierarchical structural models of psychopathology, assessment/psychometrics, scale development, and utilizing all of the above to improve research and clinical practice. Content focus is open, but I tend to be interested in trauma-related sx, the thought disorder spectrum, and aspects of psychopathology that aren't well-captured by current modeling/measurement approaches.
Measure development/validation (self-report and interview/clinician rating), quantitative models of psychopathology, interest in learning more advanced quant methods. Content focus is open. Prior experience optional!

Developmental, Genetics, Measures Development, Neurobiological Foundations, and Utility Workgroups
My research focuses on the development of externalizing psychopathology and callous-unemotional (CU) traits (i.e., callous lack of empathy, deficient affect, and reduced concern regarding tasks) during childhood and adolescence encompassed in the following interrelated themes: quantitative measurement and modeling approaches (e.g., psychometrics, intensive longitudinal methods); developmental etiological factors (e.g., prenatal experiences, parenting approaches); biological mechanisms (e.g., neuroendocrine and neuroimmune analytes, psychophysiological indices).
An interest in CU traits and strong quantitative skills are desirable (but not essential).-

Clinical Psychological Science (Dual APA/PCSAS Accreditation)
Department of Psychology, University of Marylandshackman@umd.eduhttps://shackmanlab.org/Utility, Neurobiology
Basic affective neuroscience. Translational and clinical neuroscience. Understanding the nature, neurobiology, and relevance of fear and anxiety to the development, maintenance, and recurrence of (a) internalizing illness, (b) substance use (e.g., AUD), and (c) paranoid ideation in psychosis. Major methods include clinical assessment, fMRI, and smartphone digital phenotyping. Emerging methods central to new sponsored projects include computational modeling (e.g., neuroeconomic-style analyses of risk and ambiguity), MVPA, and machine learning.
Read our papers and preprints. Have an awareness of our current grant portfolio. Explore our website. Do you have the scientific curiosity, interpersonal skills, time-management skills, and technical skills to benefit from mentorship from our team? Do you really want to understand how the brain processes threat and orchestrates typical and atypical states of fear and anxiety? Are you excited about living, working, and playing in the DMV region?

Measurement, development, methods
We study how teens and young adults regulate their impulses and emotions, with the goal of trying to understand how that regulation influences the development of health risk behaviors like alcohol and drug use.

We have a second line of research focusing on improving the use of statistical methods in the Psychological Sciences.
Ecological momentary assessment, alcohol use, behavior and emotion regulation, advanced statistical methods, Bayesian analysis

How do we evaluate nosologies and how do we implement best practice at scale in health services
Solid quantitative skills and a passion for implementation
O a PhD at Matilda provides the opportunity to work with thought leaders in the understanding and treatment of mental disorders along side large research intensive health services with a strong commitment to implementation science (https://implementationscience.com.au/)
O The team at Matilda is awesome creative supportive and delivers impactful research - it includes Prof Time Slade, Prof Maree Teesson, Prof Nickie Newton, A/Prof Matt Sunderland. And we get to hang out with the amazing A/Prof Miri Forbes nearby at Macquarie Uni.
O For candidates who arnt Australian Citizens there are some international scholarships available https://www.sydney.edu.au/scholarships/e/university-sydney-international-scholarship.html
O We are happy to discuss clinical training opportunities but this is a research only PhD program - there is no opportunity to gain professionally accredited training as a clinical psychologist in this program.
