“All science learning can be understood as a cultural accomplishment….What counts as learning and what types of knowledge are seen as important are closely tied to a community’s values and what is useful in that community context.”We all have valuable viewpoints and experiences that allow us to learn and share and teach others.

“All science learning can be understood as a cultural accomplishment….What counts as learning and what types of knowledge are seen as important are closely tied to a community’s values and what is useful in that community context.”I did not put a picture up that represents this very well. I am constantly learning how to bring in the culture of my students as I learn more about their culture. I think as educators it is so important to understand or seek to find out about the different cultures in our classroom.

“All science learning can be understood as a cultural accomplishment….What counts as learning and what types of knowledge are seen as important are closely tied to a community’s values and what is useful in that community context.”What someone values and is involved in provides for experiential learning, applications within ones ideas, the phenomenons naturally obtained and what aspects of the world we have been a part of. Real world problems can drive motivation and knowledge for all students and learners without having to drill in vocab and curriculum texts.

“All science learning can be understood as a cultural accomplishment….What counts as learning and what types of knowledge are seen as important are closely tied to a community’s values and what is useful in that community context.”Learning connected to our community or experiences is more engaging and relevant. In scouting (part of my culture), we value types of learning and need science that applies to outdoor survival and cooking outdoors. Recognizing that all students have cultural knowledge and all cultures have funds of knowledge is important as we create schools that are safe, welcoming, and nurturing for ALL of our students.

“All science learning can be understood as a cultural accomplishment….What counts as learning and what types of knowledge are seen as important are closely tied to a community’s values and what is useful in that community context.”It tied to who I am and things in my life to connect to the activity. Drawing a blank from here...sorry. Head cold.
7
“Learning science depends not only on the accumulation of facts and concepts but also on the development of an identity as a competent learner of science with motivation and interest to learn more.”Through our implementation of new curriculum across the district, I am hearing about more kids seeing themselves as scientists and engineers.
