What is one education issue that you think should be addressed in the current provincial election campaign?
Why is this issue important to you?

Why are we publically funding Catholic educational schools and no other religious educational schools?
Publically funding only one religion in a publically funded school system is blatant discrimination and against the Human Rights Act of the Province of Ontario. Catholicism should not be promoted as the major religion in Ontario, and yet it continues to be provincially funded as such. Why?

5/12/2018 8:11:33Standardized testing.
The money spent on EQAO from start to finish, as well as release time for staff, could be put to better use in teacher training, lower PTR, resources and engaging families to support learning. There is little research backing the educational benefits of standardized tests. But they have to be replaced with what does work and in an equitable way.

Class sizes (especially kindergarten) and resulting violence and behaviour issues.
My daughter was supposed to be entering JK in the Fall and we’ve chosen not to enrol her, because 36 kids stuffed into a play-based program with limited resources and objects being thrown at the teacher’s head is not my idea of a good learning environment for ANY child. It fills me with sadness that as a public school teacher I don’t feel safe enrolling my own child in my local public school.

5/13/2018 20:13:31Mental health support
Because students with and without learning disabilities, with and without strong home support, with and without basic math skills and reading skills....everyone may at some point in their school career need mental health support. Our part time counsellor is a former EA with little training. She is trained to support children with small grief issues, or those how need help with social interactions or managing their parent's divorce. Instead, she is spending all of her time supporting kids with some really big mental health challenges. There isn't anyone else who can support them at school. We need full time counsellors, even in elementary schools.

Violence in the classroom
Many occasions of violence towards other students and staff with no consequences

5/14/2018 11:06:08
Funding of Catholic Schools (we should not do this)
Inequity; public education should integrate our communities, not divide them.

Supply teacher shortages in many boards
Having impact on teacher professional learning

It's a waste of tax payers money, paying all of the fat cats at the top.

Violence in the classroom to teachers and EA's
It's a hidden, dirty secret. If the public knew what really goes on in schools they would be appalled.

EQAO. Instead of having a Grade 10 literacy test, let's have a Grade 8 literacy test. If you don't pass it, you don't move on to high school. Instead of letting students take a literacy course during the semester if they fail the literacy test, let's have them go to summer school.
I am not in favour of EQAO, I find it to be a joke. Let's find another way to see if kids are successful.

5/18/2018 22:24:31Regulation 274
Students deserve only the best teachers that were hired based on merit.

Stop funding Catholic School System
Discrimination
16
5/18/2018 22:46:41One School SystemIt is FAIR!
17
5/18/2018 22:51:10Stop Regulation 274
It is insane that teachers are hired based only on seniority. My kids deserve good teachers that are hired because they are fantastic, not because they have been sitting on a list for 5 - 10 years!
18
5/18/2018 22:52:30School Funding
Either we fund all schools (independent, jewish, catholic, muslim) or we only fund ONE school system!

Updated Curriculum (21st Century)
Kids need to be prepared for the future
20
5/18/2018 23:02:47Regulation 274
Regulation 274 is UNFAIR! Kids need awesome teachers more than ANYTHING else!
21
5/18/2018 23:03:55Charter Schools
We need to be able to choose to send our children to Charter Schools
22
5/18/2018 23:07:09School Choice
What if parents could choose the best school for their child? What if they could get 50-60% of the $12,000 govn't funding?
23
5/18/2018 23:12:00
Hire amazing teachers and put an end to Bill 115 Regulation 274
My kids deserve amazing teachers!

Consistent assessment (triangulation of data) across Ontario - A move towards mastery and an elimination of letter grades.
There is far too much subjectivity in the current system - between teachers, schools and boards. Mastery checklists would be easy for parents to understand and far less subjective.

5/19/2018 9:49:35
Stop hiring teachers based only on seniority - it is an embrassment to the profession.
Parents everywhere want teachers that are hired because they are truly talented and dedicated. Teachers that go above and beyond. Currently, teachers are hired based on their number in line. That is outrageously ridiculous! Who can respect that system? Don’t we trust that principals can hire the best teachers for their schools?

5/19/2018 9:57:50Regulation 274
This was admittedly an “over correction” of the nepotism problem in the Catholic boards. The Italian heavy boards TCDSB practice of outright nepotism caused an outpouring of grievances. Six years after Regulation 274, we need to fix or end this seniority hiring system. Hiring based on seniority has no place in the education profession if teachers are to garner any respect.
27
5/19/2018 10:00:25Regulation 274
Seniority based hiring (Regulation 274) does not encourage stellar teaching. It’s unfair and discriminatory. Students deserve the best teachers hired based on merit.
28
5/19/2018 10:48:48
Let’s get rid of Regulation 274 and merge the school systems - one secular school system
It’s 2018 - 21st Century archaic systems and hiring policies need to be updated to reflect the community and the professionalism parents/students deserve.

5/19/2018 13:21:20Bill 115 - Reg 274
Some of the best teachers my kids have had got tired of waiting on a seniority list and left to teach at private schools. If private schools hire teachers based on merit to make sure they have the best teachers - why don’t public schools do the same? This is an example of the unions yielding far too much power. Regulation 274 has got to go.

Kinder class size should not exceed 20. One school system. Fair funding and the end of Regulation 274.
We need the best teachers, safe class sizes and the end of discrimination in school systems. One amazing school system for ALL students with safe schools, and the best teachers.
31
5/19/2018 15:12:08Regulation 274
Teachers should not be hired by seniority but by merit. principals should be able to hire good teachers not forced on them by years as a teacher

One Secular School System
It’s 2018 and it’s right.

Hire better teachers by eliminating Regulation 274 #accountability
My children have had a couple of exceptional teachers, but many teachers didn’t rise to the occasion or even seem to like children/their job. We need passionate teachers that go far above and beyond. Seniority based hiring does not inspire that. Hiring based on “just seniority” is the antithesis of what schools/principals should be doing. Teachers want respect, but Regulation 274 erases ALL respect from the profession.
34
5/20/2018 20:15:32Smaller class sizes.
The needs of students are so much higher and too many students get left behind simply because they aren't making enough noise.
35
5/21/2018 11:36:49
Time is UP for Regulation 274
This archaic (factory worker based) process of hiring has no place in our education system.
36
5/21/2018 11:41:49
Regulation 274 has to be repealed & replaced.
The most important factor in education is teacher quality. Period. Teachers should be hired based on quality not their seniority # on a list. Regulation 274 was an admitted overcorection & error that Kathleen Wynne refused to fix for the students in Ontario. What a tragedy! In the meantime, parents are paying out of pocket for tutors & private school enrollemet continues to increase. Why? Regulation 274.

5/21/2018 21:31:06Regulation 274
Having complained to principals about teachers and even superintendents my wife and I decided to move our children to private school. Principals and superintendents are forced to hire the next teacher in the seniority line and the union prohibits principals from insisting on exemplary teachers or practices. This has been to the detriment of the profession. Many of us have lost respect for public education in Ontario since Regularion 274 was implemented. We are grateful for the private school option that hires teachers based on merit, ability, reference and accountability.

Roads, bridges, etc. are in rough shape.

5/22/2018 16:18:25
The amount of money spent seconding teachers for years in toronto to just ape the party line.
Money could be much better spent and have a worthwhile purpose
40
5/22/2018 17:26:42End Regulation 274
Students deserve the best teachers.

5/23/2018 8:48:15
Need for more evidence-based education policy, pedagogy. Better balance of pedagogy to promote fluency, particularly in math. Less on "skill" acquisition eg... problem solving, critical thinking.
Setting a solid foundation necessary for later learning. The idea that problem-solving and critical thinking are skills separate from content area knowledge is not supported by research.

5/23/2018 16:26:31
fair teacher hiring, not solely on seniority
I am a teacher and see the negative impact it has in the classroom
43
5/25/2018 7:08:11Regulation 274
Teachers should get positions based on merit and excellence, not based on seniority
44
5/25/2018 7:10:23
Qualified supply teacher shortage
In the French boards, the situation is so dire that getting a qualified supply teacher is the exception rather than the rule...
45
5/28/2018 13:18:37
No new teachers being hired. Bad teachers aren’t being removed and replaced with eligible teachers who have just finished university.
I will soon graduate to find a teaching job, and have a passion and the updated skills to reach full potential in today’s high schools
