Louise Curham instructions

The instructions. were clear about the task. I didn’t pay much attention to the projector set-up since I wouldn’t be doing it. Watching various Malcolm Le Grice performances plus Louise Curham at CCAS was helpful. The trial projection was worth doing to see how my movements and shapes interacted with the screen, and then after that I re-viewed various performances, which I was able to think about differently once I’d experienced how it looked and felt to be the performer.

Malcolm said he used the breath sound to coordinate movements and I found my breathing and movement synchronised during the performance – almost as a way of measuring time.

As part of the film programme contextualising the exhibition 'Anthony McCall - Solid Light Films and Other Works (1971-2014)’, EYE curated an evening about physical presence - with films about light and the body selected in collaboration with Malcolm Le Grice, filmmaker and theoretician of the avant-garde and experimental film.

Dear Malcolm, Oliver and Lynn

It's been a big night in Canberra! The art biennial opened and the 'short films' at Petrie Plaza happened in a converted shop front on a very handsome white wall with nice parquet floor.

A very small but discerning audience was in attendance.
I opened with Autumn Fog and it was a serious delight to encounter this work again Lynn. We then turned on the breath track that Nicci Haynes had recorded. After a short while she began her performance. Nicci is slightly taller than me but roughly my size, good news as this space is about as small as Horror Film 1 can manage. Lucas and I had noted a 10 metre minimum and this space is allows just a bit over 8m. Peter built some fabulous wooden boxes to lift the projectors to the right height. The hokushin ran fine with no loop tension, the other two feature Le Grice-ean paper loops. Nicci's performance was great, poised, thoughtful, playful. Nicci got most of her info by looking at your performances, Malcolm. As she's saying right now, responding to what's in the wall is what keeps you 'hanging in there'. I still think her conversation with me and getting a chance to read your notes made a difference, Malcolm. As Nicci said, it started off with your notes.

Anyway enough from me for now. We're trying to find out what social media we can tag you on Malcolm. Nicci is a big instagram user.

Very interesting to experience Autumn Fog and then Horror Film 1. Initially Peter and I felt the framing arrangements might feel too similar but to my mind, it was terrific. Malcolm's words ring in my ears that it is very difficult to follow HF1, so we settled on this order. I think it worked really well. The breath track made a good transition.

I have one other thing I want to say, what is very nice about these manual/instructions is that you, the artists, are with us as we perform or in the case of HF1, prepare to perform.

Warmest regs in life, in film et al.

Hi Louise,
So poetic reading your description. Reenactment is intimate and brings the work closer to the audience than any documentation, especially with film projection performances. Must be quite an experience seeing these two different works. Lx

Noticed that Nicci and Louise did not pay attention to the defocusing at the end before the projectors are turned off.
Discussion with Louise about performing clothed or nude. Decision to perform nude reflecting on Louise’s comment from 2013/4 that the nudity added a sense of occasion, of attention, or a special event.

Osnabrück a further notice about the audience arrangement: The hall was big enough to have the audience seated in two "groups, with the perrformer starting the backward walk at a distance from the audience but from half the way through, walking between the two "groups" of seated audience. The hight of the projections and width was also ideal. At some point the effect was of the performer almos exiting the screen. I found this set up very effective and stunning. Much better than with the audience seating on the floor. The audience seated on the floor might achieve more sense of intimacy but it looses a bit of the visual effect because of the angle of the point of view.

Dear Malcolm,
Just a quick report on yesterday performance. It went really well, the headset mic works really good, it gives unity and authenticity to the performance. Betija performed wonderfully!
Personally I'm super happy with how it went, the timing the pacing, breathing it was all really good!

You will get a full documentation of the performance but for now a little animation attached, just from my phone.
All the best,
Cinzia
