10/20/2014 13:08:56Promotional.Potential students, employers, also internal audiences -- current faculty and staff.I was the producer for all three, and I used talented students in 1) our documentary and history program, 2) our Television Radio and Film major and 3) our Public Diplomacy program. Each cost approx. $500 and was paid to the student filmmakers. The time, scheduling and funding. To get the word out about our new program and to feature our students.I would still use student filmmakers (for their own education), but I would do these more frequently (probably once a year) instead of 1 ever 2 or so years.#1 (Chris Sisson, Tuan Le) Public Diplomacy Film

10/20/2014 17:05:04We created two videos on the undergraduate research program that we launched last year. It was a part of our reaccreditation process with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Initially, SACS on-site visitors; now, faculty members who will be working with students on the research projects; eventually, students who will apply to participate in the research projects. QEP Coordinator and a small committee of advisors led the ideas about content of the video; our University marketing topic made the ideas a reality. ??Coordinating times and schedules with students and faculty (the video featured short interviews with a lot of people). Informing the on-site SACS visitors of the program; promoting interest among students and faculty in the program. I'm afraid these are proprietary and used only internally--sorry!

Someone in our marketing department might be able to share the videos with you:
Matt Toy: mtoy@trevecca.edu

Melissa Jackson: mjackson@trevecca.edu
used only internally

10/20/2014 17:31:06Tutorials and promotionalother faculty members and advanced students. We are also now doing some international work in Public Relations and travel would be too expensivethe production people in the JMC programAs these were done as part of advanced classes or for the distant learning department at the University who paid everything I can't say. We've had no cost so farDealing with other cultures and finding ways to get feed backdistribution to a wider audience through the internet and University hook upsThe video would be done as part of a wider on-line class or discussion where questions could be asked and answered. This can be done through a video conferencing or inter-active Web sessionwww.JMC.KSU.edu then follow the links or through KSU distant learning global@k-state.edu or through the Dole Centerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmEqeRUG_II

10/22/2014 15:03:21Lectures and tutorials.Students in each section.People from the department. Each instructor has the software and hardware to produce podcasts from their offices.Next to nothing, other than the electricity used to run the computers. The software is university licensed and the hardware is re-purposed from our video/audio program classes.Just staying ahead of the technological changes in production and advances in the technology of producing news and music.Mainly for online students who are unable to attend classroom lectures or who have trouble with materials. It serves as a way to better explain concepts for students both in class and online. We really don't do research videos here. Just classroom material. All of out podcasts are posted in our university's BlackBoard on line class system. I do not think you can access these, unless you want to take some classes. Sorry. I hope this helps anyway.used only internally (mostly online lectures; not really what we are looking for)

10/23/2014 17:10:09We try to video all "public" department events. These include research presentations at our undergraduate conference, our annual "ethics bowl," etc. We also have a promotional video on our website.Prospective students
Current students
We typically do those in-house. We teach video in our department, so we have lots of people who can shoot and edit.N/A -- Videos are done by faculty, staff and students.Often, not enough of a video componentWe are a visual culture.
These are also good way of sharing things with people who aren't on campus.

10/24/2014 18:24:23promotionalsanyone interested in the goals of our program and the kind of research being done.outside production company did videotaping and editing with consultation and direction from the department.$3000: videography, editing, soundSome of it doesn't translate well into videos. Solitary and traditional research (writing books & essays) doesn't convey well. More multimedia work does.wanted to capture research in department --possibly for outreach & recruit ment, definitely for archival purposes

Perhaps purchase more advanced shooting capabilities that more specific filming equipment will allow and find someone who can advise & support us with some of the technical aspects of shooting and editingFour documentaries to date focusing on the following topics:

Audism (the oppression of Deaf people) in higher education and how students navigate and challenge the system
Deaf undocumented people
Deaf skaters (skateboarding)
Deaf graffiti artists in Los Angeles

a number of videos
most are promotionals for department; department makes a lot of them for the other parts of the university like athletic program
prospective students
once in a while for alumni
mostly the department; faculty member brenda garten who was a former news anchor leads the video production; she gets help from film and communication students; the students also help out area nonprofits by creating videos for themfree
credit for students
videos for outside people, no fee, encourage to make tax-deductible donation
fair amount of faculty turnover; mostly involuntary (like death); trying to keep things as current as possible mostly to attract prospective studentsfind clearest visual hook for the research; find clips of things related; for his sporsts research specifically, he wants footage of professional sports and collegiate sports;
for a fellow faculty member's experience, he was a survivor of rwandan massacre <---use found footage and focus on the emotional aftermath in his current life

event videos, promotional videos, lectures, tutorials, treatment condition for study
students
mostly self produced, did use undergraduates for some content,
Not sure what to include in this category, most of the software and video/phtogrpahy is already self-owned or departmental and locations generally part of other programs - e.g., study abroad
1. Time it takes to create video
2. trying to identify good visual images that appear natural
3. Rapid changes that make videos obsolete (e.g., staff turnover)
4. changes in priorities and marketing/poroduction goals
To find more effective ways to communication informaiton to students. This is expeciallyl true with tutorials.
1. develop an appropriate script and shot list - be conscious in choices rather than reactive to what is available
2. spend more time in composing shots

Derrick Tepaske, Framingham State University (talked to by phone)Dept of Communication Arts basically hasn't made research videos, but for a helpful-to-know reason: FSU is focused on undergrad education, so not much actual research is produced
12
Robin Stone, Roger Williams CollegeTheater dept, no research-related video (but uses some original video in productions). Referred us to Mike Scully (mscully@rwc.edu), who does video for Roger Williams comm team
