| Attention Patriots! - Before you get overwhelmed: Note that this is a list of any book challenged - or flagged as concerning - anywhere - by anyone! It is always going to grow.
| Now tracking over 7500 titles!
| Since July 1, 2022, I have compiled and shared this list so we can avoid duplicating efforts and to show the SIZE of the problem (inappropriate materials in our schools). On a total of forty-four very rare occasions, I have found no valid reason to challenge a particular book and so I removed it from the list. Otherwise, like the problems in our public schools, it just grows. This list is now updated 1 or 2 times monthly.
| HOW MANY of these titles were found in CCDS [Clay County, FL.] Public Schools?
| 3195 | |||||||||||||||||||||
| HOW MANY WERE WEEDED [AKA CURATED] WITHOUT A FORMAL CHALLENGE
| 25 | |||||||||||||||||||||
| HOW MANY REMAIN ON THE SHELVES IN Clay County?
| 2679 | |||||||||||||||||||||
| HOW MANY THAT REMAIN ON THE SHELVES WERE NOT YET CHALLENGED IN CCDS?
| 2113 | |||||||||||||||||||||
| A MISSION STATEMENT OF SORTS: I'll start with a sample controversy - In my opinion, a book with any kissing of a non-family member (in a romantic fashion) is not appropriate for a child to read in kindergarten! Some may disagree. Let's have the community resolve the issue. I am merely pushing the question into the sunlight. I do not want the responsibility of personally deciding all such matters, and my opponents won't tolerate any restrictions. Somewhere in the middle, I hope we agree to develop/negotiate and accept community standards that include a modicum of discernment. I'd like to see ONE Clay County public school library meet these future safer standards, and then use it as an example for the Nation. With our June 2024 Rubric and Guideline and Policy and Procedure, CCDS may be in the best position to demonstrate proper discernment to the poorly trained and non-discerning members of their Media Center and Purchasing staff.
| Many book's titles are connected to a link. Via these links you'll often find some content or summaries or excerpts so YOU can decide for yourself if these books are appropriate for your own children, or if you may want to challenge a book. These links should provide enough information so you may easily challenge the book in your own district, even if you've never read the book yourself. I have read and/or challenged well over 1000 of the linked titles in Clay County, Florida. About half of the challenges have resulted in the books being entirely removed from this district, and HUNDREDS of others were removed from elementary and junior high school libraries to more age appropriate locations. A growing number of these retained books have received a PARENTAL ADVISORY status. These will require a parent's permission before being loaned to any minor.

| Lastly: although I am affiliated with No Left Turn in Education, the NLTE team does not endorse this list or the mission to challenge ALL inappropriate items in school libraries. The responsibility for any errors or omissions is mine alone. Thank you and G-d Bless America! Bruce Friedman 12/13/2024 YOU, YES YOU!, COULD HELP BY READING ONE BOOK. 18 | COLOR GUIDE: [VICTORIES!] In Clay County School District, Florida - GREEN CELLS refer to BOOKS PERMANENTLY REMOVED FROM THE DISTRICT! [491 TITLES as of 12/13/2024 - the district claims this is a lower number - they only count removed books and ignore those that were deselected or weeded after a challenge was filed] This link will bring you to the CCDS RECON LIST THAT NOW HAS Three TABS [three school years].
| COLOR GUIDE: [SAFE LIMBO/REMOVED PENDING REVIEW] BY ONE OR TWO COMMITTEES In Clay County School District, Florida - ORANGE CELLS refer to CHALLENGED BOOKS NOW ON THE DISTRICT RECONSIDERATION LIST (OR EXPECTED TO APPEAR IN 5 DAYS OR LESS). ALL WERE SUPPOSEDLY TEMPORARILY REMOVED FROM THE DISTRICT'S SCHOOL LIBRARIES! 60 WITH THIS STATUS AS OF 12/13/2024.
| COLOR GUIDE: [NEW UNSAFE LIMBO/CHALLENGES REFUSED OR RETURNED AS PER DENYING MY PARENTAL STATUS AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS!] 68 WITH THIS STATUS AS OF 12/13/24. About 150 MORE UNFINISHED BUT READ.
| COLOR GUIDE: [UNSAFE LIMBO/ACCESS GRANTED TO MINORS/SETBACKS/APPEALS] In Clay County School District, Florida - BLUE CELLS refer to CHALLENGED BOOKS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE EVER BEEN "TEMPORARILY" REMOVED FROM THE DISTRICT, BUT were JUDGED APPROPRIATE FOR SOME OR ALL SCHOOLS AND RETAINED OR PUT BACK ON THE SHELVES! OUR 2024 RUBRIC IS FAILING TO PROTECT CHILDREN! I WILL APPEAL EACH AND EVERY SUCH BOOK. BY REQUIRING THE SCHOOL BOARD TO RULE ON EACH AND EVERY BOOK, WE WILL REVEAL SOME OF THE SUBTLE DETERMINANTS THAT LED TO SOME BOOKS BEING REMOVED AT EARLY LEVELS AND MOVED TO OTHERS. EX. BOOKS REMOVED FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND YET RETAINED AT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS AND OR HIGH SCHOOLS MUST HAVE BEEN SUBJECT TO SOME DISCERNMENT. I WANT THAT EXACT DISCERNMENT DEFINED. I WANT IT IN WRITING. I WANT IT BLESSED BY THE PLURALITY OF OUR COMMUNITY. I WANT IT ABSORBED INTO POLICY AND PROCEDURE. I WANT HONOR AND INTEGRITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY RESTORED TO THIS DECLINING SYSTEM. ZERO BOOKS SHOULD BE ON THE SHELVES WITHOUT A QUALIFIED *AND MORAL ADULT HAVING READ THE BOOK AND BLESSED ITS CONTENTS AS BENEFICIAL TO A CHILD. TO ALL THE FORMERLY UNACCOUNTABLE BUREAUCRATS, SIGN HERE PLEASE! BOOKS THAT FAIL AN APPEAL WILL ALSO DEFINE A RUBRIC IN ACTION. ON MAY 2, 2024, CCDS APPROVED A (soft) RUBRIC. They wasted another entire school year and the Superintendent's latest procedure is inadequate. Keep an eye on this. On 8/1/24, The CCDS school board, which has misinterpreted their responsibilities under the law (especially HB1557 and HB1069 and FS1006.26) and is largely unconcerned with books that don't meet the level of porn or inappropriateness defined in FL statute 847, made rulings on about 500 of my appeals: These rulings include retaining books that are polluted with: SEE SUBCATEGORIES LINK BELOW - ANYWAY, AS OF 12/13/24, THERE IS ONLY ONE PENDING APPEAL.
| PLEASE READ THIS - SEE SUBCATEGORIES LINK
| COLOR GUIDE: [PARTIAL OR COMPLETE FAILURES AND SACRIFICED PAWNS] In Clay County School District, Florida - RED CELLS refer to CHALLENGED BOOKS THAT WERE MAYBE "TEMPORARILY" REMOVED FROM THE DISTRICT LIBRARIES, BUT WERE JUDGED APPROPRIATE FOR SOME OR ALL SCHOOLS. Then, after I APPEALED THEM ALL, the appeals failed, resulting in these books being RETAINED. **IN MY OPINION, SOME ARE PORN AND SOME ARE WORSE THAN PORN! In some cases, this result was a planned part of my effort to force the CCDS to better define the line between age-appropriateness and inappropriateness via guidelines and a rubric. Therefore, the retained book's contents serve as a default guideline for further challenges and purchases. Otherwise, shame on our feckless school board and Superintendent for failing distance us from the harmful influence of the American Library Association and for failing to "err on the side of caution" and failing to create a comprehensive and "reasonably prudent" rubric/guideline; and for failing to protect our children! THERE ARE 503 TITLES WITH THIS STATUS AS OF 12/13/2024. THIS IS NOT ALL BAD NEWS! MOST OF THESE WERE MOVED TO AGE APPROPRIATE SCHOOLS. THIS NUMBER WILL SURELY GROW. Roughly 100 of them now require parental permission (Parental Advisory).
| COLOR GUIDE: [new in 2024 - LESSER WINS - TAKE THE WIN] In Clay County School District, Florida - PINK CELLS refer to BOOKS THAT WERE NEVER FORMALLY CHALLENGED BUT HAD BEEN IDENTIFIED AS POTENTIALLY TROUBLING. REMOVED FROM THE DISTRICT LIBRARIES BY WEEDING. THERE ARE MORE THAN 25 TITLES WITH THIS STATUS AS OF 12/13/2024. THESE WILL NEVER APPEAR ON THE DISTRICT RECONSIDERATION LIST. :( "SUNSHINE" DOES NOT APPLY TO WEEDING [AKA Curating]. THE CCDS SYSTEM IS NOT LETTING THE COMMUNITY KNOW ABOUT WEEDINGS (OR ACQUISITIONS). *Aquisitions HERE:
