Following in the footsteps of authors like Joseph Delaney, Marissa Meyer takes a detour in the telling of The Lunar Chronicles with Fairest to provide readers with the backstory of her arch villain Levana. In Fairest, readers learn about Levana's relationship with an abusive older sister, her tragic attempts to capture love, and how she became the bitter nemesis of Cinder. If anything, Meyer is becoming more adept at adding depth to her characters--which made this a more satisfying read. This story also introduces Winter, Levana's stepdaughter, who is featured in her own book which was released in November, 2015. Be aware: Even at age sixteen, Levana is behaving with all the feminine wiles of Scarlett O'Hara. Her sexuality is tastefully addressed. More important are Meyers' examination of the themes of beauty, perfection, and love. Levana's desire for intimacy and her use of sex to get it makes this a timely and thought-provoking story.
A must-have book to round out collections containing The Lunar Chronicles.
This is an excellent book for introducing the skill of looking at a situation through multiple perspectives. It is appropriate for independent reading project.

Steve Jobs: insanely great
R-Schwartz & Wade Books2015$22.95978-0-30798295-7
Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12
223
The subtitle “insanely great” comes from a phrase commonly used by Steve Jobs, but is also a good indicator of the perspective of this graphic biography. Other than an insistence that Jobs was very difficult to work for, "Steve Jobs: insanely great" glosses over his well-known faults and legal battles to give a wide, surface level view of his innovations and accomplishments. Hartland grounds Jobs in his time period by presenting a two page spread of common technologies every decade, so young readers see the movement from record players and rotary phones to, eventually, iTunes and the iPhone. This biography could easily work for even younger audiences, providing a drawing early in the book of a young Jobs smoking a joint isn’t an issue. Hartland’s style may not work for every body – the hand lettering is a mix of block, print, and cursive, often in the same sentence, and word bubbles and panels are sometimes hard to follow, sometimes too busy. Most of the book follows a straight chronological order, so the last few pages, where it flips back a few years to Jobs 2005 Stanford commencement speech before concluding with his death in 2011 make the ending feel a little abrupt. Includes bibliography and notes.
Overall, "Steve Jobs: insanely great" is a solid graphic telling of Jobs accomplishments. A good purchase for teen collections where graphic biographies are popular or to supplement other material about Steve Jobs.

Fifteen-year old Kivali is sent by her adopted mother Sheila to government-run CrocCamp to learn a place in the dystopic society they live in. Kivali, known throughout the novel as Lizard, is a mid-range bender – she doesn’t identify, or test, as either strongly feminine or masculine. In her society, transitioning from birth sex to a strong opposite gender seems to be generally accepted, but being mid-range (genderqueer) or a samer (gay) is not. Lizard’s great fear is being cast out from her society into Blight, and in CrocCamp she finally has what she’s hungered for: community, friends, and a feeling of peace and togetherness brought on by a camp-administered drug called kickshaw. But she still can’t trust the camp and its leader, Ms. Michetti, completely. On her first night she saw one camper vape (disappear into thin air); her friend Rasta refuses to take kickshaw; and she has a hard time tuning into Lizard Radio, a kind-of meditative state that has helped her cope for years. The characters and themes of Lizard Radio are interesting, particularly Lizard’s friendship with Rasta and Lizard’s growing understanding that just as people are not all feminine or all masculine, they are also neither all good or all bad, neither all follower or all leader. As a camp story, this works pretty well. As a dystopian story, however, it falls apart. Any world-building outside of the camp is left for readers to guess at. Vaping, Blight, even Lizard Radio are never really understood, either by the main character or the reader. A sequel could help flesh this out, but it doesn't look like one is planned.
Recommended for fans of weird YA and for readers looking for a genderqueer perspective.

Knopf Books for Young Readers
2015$18.99978-0553512700Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8126
Gris Grimly delivers new illustrations for Ray Bradbury’s classic Halloween story. On Halloween night, eight costumed boys are taken on a tour through space and time by a ghastly Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud to learn about the origins of their Halloween celebrations – and also to find and save their friend Pipkin. Gris Grimly’s edition includes black and white illustrations along with three full color plates that capture the spirit of the story. The color illustrations are particularly beautiful, with shades of orange and black.
The style "The Halloween Tree" may feel old-fashioned for young readers, and the book probably works best as an all-ages read aloud. Recommended for families and older children looking for a longer Halloween book, and for fans of Bradbury's stories.

Trouble is a Friend of Mine

Following her parents’ divorce, high school junior Zoe Webster has moved with her mother out of Brooklyn to a small city upstate. Determined to transfer to a Princeton feeder school soon, Zoe isn’t looking to make new friends, but as soon as the school year begins she finds herself drawn into the world of Philip Digby. First partnered with Digby on an independent project for school,it's not long before she's involved with his obsessive investigation into the disappearance of a missing local girl, which he believes may be connected to his own sister's disappearance several years before. As time passes, laws are broken, and no work is done on their school project, Zoe is surprised to realize that Digby has become her friend. "Trouble is a Friend of Mine" is sharp and funny. Zoe's first-person narration is full of witty sarcasm and little self-awareness. In the end, the primary mystery is resolved but much is left open for what would be a very welcome sequel.
While the plot is intriguing, it was the development of the relationship between Zoe and Digby that kept me reading into the early hours of the morning. This novel is perfect for fans of humorous, character-driven mysteries like Beth Fantaskey’s "Buzz Kill" or Liza Lutz's Spellman series.

Masha is mourning her grandmother, who told her folktales about Baba Yaga and took care of her after her mother died, the night her father introduces his new fiancé and her young, biting daughter. If her father found a new family, she can too, she decides, and answers an advertisement to become Baba Yaga’s assistant. Into the woods she goes, using the knowledge gleaned from her grandmother’s stories to outwit the legendary witch and pass the tests to become her assistant. Emily Carroll’s artwork is stunning, and it’s what makes the story so enchanting. The drawing style changes between the main plot line, Masha’s memories, and the folktales she recalls to distinguish the different layers of storytelling. Baba Yaga’s face is occasionally terrifying, but overall Carroll’s illustrations are less scary than in "Through the Woods." But as in her other work, it’s her use of color that makes her art so beautiful and distinctive. The ending, with Masha's decision to truly become Baba Yaga's assistant after briefly returning home, gives her story a real fairy tale twist.
A great middle grade graphic novel that teen readers will also enjoy.

The Great Monkey Rescue is a wonderful introduction to the frustrating world of conservation. Native to Brazil, the Golden Lion Tamarin is a beautiful little monkey that was dying out as its habitat was destroyed. In ten short "chapters" Markle tells the story of a little female tamarin who is seeking habitat and a family group. Colorful sidebars augment the engaging narrative of the struggles zoo keepers and conservationists faced in trying to keep these little critters alive. Lerner suggests the grade levels at 4 - 6, but this has the potential for engaging children much younger than that. This title is a Junior Library Guild selection and was selected a NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K - 12.
An excellent high-interest addition with multiple curricular opportunities.
There are several ties to Common Core Standards in Reading and Writing as well as the Next Generation Science Standards specifically pertaining to the study of interdependent relationships in ecosystems. Markle's storytelling tone opens read-aloud possibilities that could be scaffolded for students from K - 5.

Aubrey and her friends vow to apply Shelby's Theories on relationships during their junior year, theories that boil down to: boys can't be trusted, they'll use you and leave you, so use them on the same immoral terms. Aubrey, who hooked up with Trip briefly last year is ready to switch her attention to Nathan, a hot new guy (mutual lust at first sight). She began having problems staying emotionally aloof, and when Nathan cheats on her with Shelby , it is too much for her to bear. Aubrey drinks herself senseless, and tries to have Trip come to her rescue. Eventually she discovers that the birth of Shelby's theories was to try to cover up how rotten she felt about herself after being dumped after her first sexual encounter. Aubrey cautiously rebuilds her self-image and goals as her senior year ends.
The teens in this novel are devoted to excessive drinking, smoking, partying, making out topless, promiscuity (usually with condoms, not graphic), f-bombs, extreme bullying of a former friend, and ditching school. It takes until the end of the novel for Aubrey to see how self-destructive the Theories are, but she has no plans to give up most of the other risky behaviors. Too many teen readers will see this as a encouragement to emulate Aubrey and her friends' activities.
Readers who look up to the party-hearty crowd and seeking romances will want to pass this title around. The response of a teen I loaned this to was "DAAMMNN!" and "full of chaos and unnecessary drama" which she loved.

Electrical Wizard: How Nikola Tesla lit up the world
RCandlewick2013$4.99978-0763679798Grades 4 - 547
This paperback in the Candlewick Biographies series gives seven short illustrated chapters about the life of Tesla and his struggles to present his inventions to America, especially using alternating current as a better alternative to direct current for the generation and transmission of electricity. Appended are an example of how Tesla's ideas were often far ahead of his time: low-cost wireless transmission, one on Tesla's rivalry with Thomas Edison, scientific notes explaining Tesla's work, a timeline, notes, bibliography, and index.
Edison's contributions to science have been well documented for children, but Tesla has not received his due. It is refreshing to have information on Tesla accessible and available for elementary readers.
Include with STEM, and to encourage hands-on exploration of inventive ideas.

Things We Know By Heart
AHarperTeen2015$17.99978-0062299437Grades 9 - 12291
It has been 400 days since Quinn’s boyfriend Trent was hit by a car and killed. She finished high school in a fog of grief, reaching out and slowly meeting recipients of his donated organs in an attempt to get closure until there is just one person she hasn’t heard back from: the recipient of his heart. Taking things into her own hands, she tracks him down through newspaper articles and his sister’s blog. Quinn just wants to see him, nineteen-year-old Colton Thomas, so she drives to the small beach town where he lives and gets a coffee across the street from his family’s surf shop. Of course, they meet. Thanks in part to a chapter-opening quote about cellular memory, Kirby makes Quinn and Colton’s immediate connection feel believable and not contrived. As the two begin to date, Quinn’s confliction between her growing feelings for Colton and her guilt both for moving on from Trent and for hiding from Colton exactly how and why they met drive the narrative. Quinn and Colton spend a lot of time on the water, and Kirby is best when describing these magical moments in nature – kayaking into a cave, red tides, and bioluminescent algae. Quinn’s relationships with her parents and sister are also well-drawn. But Quinn puts off telling Colton that she knows he’s the recipient of her late boyfriend’s heart just too long. The conflict gets stale before it even comes it a head, and then is resolved too quickly. This flaw undermines what is otherwise a strong teen romance.
An additional purchase where dramatic love stories are popular.

“And winters were when her mother was at her worst, her love at its most brittle.” It is cold the day that Sarah’s mother leaves her and her father. For Sarah’s whole life, her family has left together, chasing warmth, and life without her mother is very strange. Sarah meets an older boy called Alan out in the small woods near her house who appears and disappears abruptly and says he’s looking for a bird. Her father is changing, getting hairier and wilder and neglecting his daughter. Suddenly, he whisks her away to live with her grandparents, who she didn’t know existed, in a castle tower in the middle of nowhere. And then: a locked up beast, a talking white raven, a house kept by magic. Sarah’s unraveling her family’s story of an inter-generational curse - and she’s cursed too. “Beastkeeper” is a beautiful book that borrows elements of familiar fairy tales to make something quite unique. With complex characters, murky motivations, and lovely, descriptive prose, the story will make you think twice about what we call fairy-tale love.
“Beastkeeper” would be a great book club selection and has cross-over appeal for middle-grade readers, teens, and adults.

But then the nosy Duchess Wigtower comes for tea and informs Princess Magnolia that she absolutely loves to uncover secrets. The Duchess is certain that prim Princess Magnolia cannot be so perfect, she must have a secret - and she's bent on finding it out! Princess Magnolia becomes nervous, because she actually does have an extremely-secret secret! The Princess is actually The Princess in Black in disguise, a princess that fights monsters who are trying to invade her kingdom (they're fluffy monsters, though - so, not scary to young readers). When Princess Magnolia gets a monster alarm, she must leave tea to go save her kingdom - will she be able to keep her secret life from the Duchess, or will she be exposed?

A Step into Reading Level 3 book. This beginning reader's biography of Theodore Roosevelt focuses on President Roosevelt's love of the outdoors from a very young age and how it led him to create our nation's first national parks and many other protected areas. The clear text combined with engaging illustrations will grab the reader's attention all the way until the end.

Sequel to Earth Space Moon Base. The cover is very striking; a dark underwater scene with mysterious dark purple lettering and a blue submarine. However the story starts out to solve a mystery without giving the reader any insight as what the characters aboard the submarine are looking for. The rhyming text is interesting, but I was very unclear about "this labyrinth of dessert" as no one was dining, just looking at jellyfish. After the missing starfish are found the illustrations change dramatically to lighter and brighter colors. While the illustrations were interesting, the overall story lacks appeal.
I just don't see this as one students would return to. As a read aloud, many vocabulary words would have to be explained.

Parts of the story dragged out a bit for me, but middle school boys will be drawn in by the cave exploration and Buck's strong will.
Libraries will want to add this to their collections of Phyllis Reynolds Naylor books.
Interesting way to introduce disabilities, speech pathologists and/or cave exploring.

Warriors Dawn of the Clans series book 4 continues the explanation of how the Spirit-cats who fell in the last great battle, led the former mountain cat groups (Clear Sky's forest camp, River Ripple's island camp and Tall Shadow's camp), as they sought to hold their territories against rogue cats, their own sometimes divided loyalties, and a deadly disease that kills birds, mice and cats. Cat leaders and group members struggle with such emotions as grief, ambition, and revenge. The multiple characters require a certain amount of attention to keep straight, but a map and lists of the camps by the names of cats, and their descriptions help.
The original Warriors series is popular. Buy where these origin tales are requested by readers of Hunter's other titles.
Fans of series fantasies will approve.

The only words in the whole book are hurry and wait. A mom and her son are walking to the subway, mom keeps saying hurry and the son keeps saying wait because he wants to explore everything as they walk. At the end the boy says wait and the mom sees a rainbow and she says yes, wait. Good message enjoy the little things along the way.

This book is mostly filled with detained pictures that tell the story without having to have any words. The illustration seem to be more old fashioned could be more appealing with more modern style of clothes and fashion.
The book seemed out dated in the way the illustrations were done. The little text they had was not captivating. It would have been better to have the entire book just have illustrations with no words. This way young children can tell the story from the pictures.

Gray, Bree and a group of Rebels are mounting a final battle to bring down the Franconian Order. Losses are mounting on both sides and it is getting difficult for the rebel group to differentiate between a "Forger" and a "real" human.
To make their work even more difficult, Gray has fallen in love with Bree and will do anything to protect her. Their relationship is tested to the point that they are willing to sacrifice their own lives in battle.
The tide is turning in the fight but the Rebels must trust some "outsiders" that are not 100% loyal to their cause.
"Forged" keeps the reader rooting for the underdogs. It is definitely a book that will be difficult to put down. Each battle makes you feel like you are there fighting with them.

Tom and his mom experienced a long winter. Tom loved winter and wished it would never leave. Mom was worried about frail Nana and how long she could survive winter. Tom met a winter child. They both loved to play in the snow and both wished winter could stay forever. Soon there was not more wood for the fire and no food left to eat. Winter had stayed too long. Tom told his friend that he was sad because if spring didn't come soon his nana would die. The winter child said the reason winter stayed so long was because he would not sleep. This paperback graphic novel finds Mark, an explosives expert, looking for better opportunities. When a quick trip for big pay comes up, Mark agrees to join the team going to a small Asia country. The team completes their explosives job and is on their way out when Mark sees an injured child. Refusing to leave the child behind, Mark's generosity backfires when he is taken captive by a group of jungle children who order him to undo the explosives. The children channel a divine power that ultimately helps them complete their task. This is a bloody, graphic tale of civil war and the horrors children suffer. According to the end page the story is loosely based on the 1990s Htoo twins and their "God's Army." The illustrations are well done and convey the mood of the story. Graphic violence and language makes it most appropriate for upper high school and adults.
The unusual story is interesting, but the graphic violence will limit this one's audience.

Teen Lilith (Lil) has been struggling with her mother's apparent suicide. When she gets invited to the same leadership conference her mom attended, she jumps at the chance to learn more about her mom. Lil soon makes friends with the other three girls on her conference team and they soon learn they're getting much more than they bargained for. After one of the mentors is murdered, the girls are thrust into a life or death quest to protect a key that holds the truth. This is a fast-paced fantasy based on Greek mythology. The only drawback is that the ending is "told" to the characters. The story moves quickly and there are lots of loose ends that are rather abruptly wrapped up. There is an open door for a future sequel.
This will appeal to middle school girls that enjoy a fantasy based mystery.

The story begins with a background of ancient Egyptian times and the legend of a people rescued by their worship of Seth, the god of chaos. The short intro ends as three beloved sons of popular kings are being asked to be sacrifices for the continued well-being of their people. Flash forward to present day New York city where Liliana is beginning her spring break; looking for some solitude in her one of her favorite places, Metropolitan Museum of Art. As she sits and gets ready to sketch in the Egyptian wing she hears a scraping sound and moans. Thus begins her adventure with Amon, who turns out to be one of the princes who were sacrificed thousands of years ago. They awaken once every 1000 years and battle the dark to save the world. It sounds a little silly but the characters are well developed and sympathetic. I thought the author could have left out some of the extraneous details, but I expected to be skeptical and I was swept up in the magic of journeying to Egypt to find the other two brothers so they can join him in his quest. The problem for Amon is that his "canopic jars" (the jars that hold a mummy's organs) are not with him, so he must borrow some life force from Lily. They struggle with romance that is forbidden on so many levels and come out as winners in the end. I will recommend this book to my students.
This is a new series from Houck who gave us the popular Tiger's Curse series. It does not disappoint.
This would be good for students interested in Egyptian mythology and has a couple of excellent examples of compare and contrast as Amon learns about how people view mummies through movies and books in the present day.

This is a continuation of the story from Kiss of Deception. Lia has run away from an arranged marriage to take up a new life as a commoner. Her faithful lady's maid has accompanied her and at first they fit in. She is unaware pursued by the prince she doesn't know but jilted and an assassin sent from an unfriendly kingdom that is poised to invade. At the end of that story, she is kidnapped and carried away to the far away, primitive kingdom in the north. It is a bleak place of cold and poverty, ruled by a strong but brutal dictator. She has grown up hearing the readings of their "religion" that tells of the Remnant of people who survive the war of the gods. In the primitive kingdom these teachings, which she discounted most of her life, take on new import because she learns of her own connection to the prophetess of their city. Subterfuge, politics, love and betrayal all figure in as Rafe, her intended prince enters the city as an emissary in an attempt to stay near her and keep her safe. But the assassin has feelings for her as well and she is caught in the life and death struggles of this place. After the first book I was waiting for the second book and it did not disappoint! If you liked Kiss of Deception, this book is for you.
This second in a series is a must have to continue the saga of The Remnant Chronicles.

Details like the yellow construction tape, buttons on the boss’s radio and bright yellow gloves augment the real language that adults will appreciate and kids will eat up. Each page has a piece of equipment paired with the task that “Boss” is assigning; “Level that pile!” to the bulldozer that is poised to oblige. Boss walks away to the next job as the machinery moves into action. When Boss says, “This job is done” and we see the new park, complete with people and a little boy in construction garb, everyone will cheer and ask for one more time. Colorful, realistic, detailed illustrations make this book a must have for the pre-school-1st grade set.

Esther Ehrlich's novel, "Nest," allows one a glimpse into the confusion and complexity of emotions the young girl, Chirp, experiences as her mother's health and well being crumbles. Though Chirp's beloved birds and marshlands help to sustain her, it is her friendship with Joey, the boy across the street, which gives her the support she really needs.
The almost elegant writing style is clear and easy to follow. Sensitive and quirky, the characters exhibit their humanness and feelings throughout the pages. Ms Ehrlich illustrates the circumstances with a light and insightful style allowing one to travel through the more challenging moments without getting bogged down.
There is no fairy tale ending to this story. However, the conclusion offers a promise of true friendship and a glimpse of the healing to come.
Perhaps this story is not essential to a smaller, more generalized library, but it would be appreciated by any library frequented by preteen and teenage girls. Unless your demographics warrant this title, limited budgets might nix it.
Any program addressing loss of family or grief could utilize this book. "Nest" also touches on physical abuse. It would be a beneficial addition to any collection on illness, depression, or death. However, the story is interesting enough to stand on its own.

The story follows Sophie's travels when she decides to mail an elephant to her aunt "who lives almost completely alone and could really use the company". She can't put stamps on it and just mail it, so she tries many interesting and funny ways to get the elephant to her aunt. Simple story text. The illustrations complement the story.
This could lead to a discussion of our current postal mail service and how it works; careers, zoos; using one's imagination.
Great for "just for fun" reading; writing projects

This book is one of a series of books by ABDO company that addresses different issues for today's families. This one is about a little girl, Jazz, who is in second grade and is chosen as Student of the Week. The 'class reporter', Lenny, goes home with her to take pictures and write a special report on her. Of course, he finds out that her life with her two dads is no different than one with a mom and dad.
I like the simplicity and matter-of-factness of this book. It very nicely shows how families make look different on the surface (two dads, two moms, one mom, one dad, and so on), but they are all the same as far as love, taking care of each other...
Can be used with units on families.

Every other Tuesday, or Landay, seventeen-year-old Jacob walks the border of the 7800 acres of Montana land he knows as Nodd. Devoted to his isolated religious community of the Graced, Jacob looks forward to marrying soon and to the possibility of tending the sacred tree that grows in the middle of their village. The novel begins with Jacob remembering his encounter with a wolf on the northern border the winter before, a sighting so rare that no one believed him. Jacob continues to sense this literal wolf at the door as his uncertainty with his world is sparked and fanned. First he meets Lynna, a girl who lives at the ranch that borders Nodd. Then a new family joins the Graced, including a boy only a few years younger than Jacob who openly scorns their lifestyle and religion. And finally, old Father Grace, the founder of Nodd, announces his marriage to the girl Jacob always believed he would marry. Jacob’s growing disillusionment is well-paced and believable, and even as faith-shattered events pile up (state officials are bribed during a public inspection, Father Grace goes mad, the sacred tree is poisoned), Hautman provides a more nuanced view than many of the recent crop of religious cult novels through the reactions of secondary characters, notably Jacob’s mother. In a conversation late in the novel, she explains to her son why they joined the Graced and why she’ll stay while at the same time demonstrating that she understands if he needs to leave.
A thought-provoking coming-of-age novel that explores universal questions of faith and individuality.

Shen, a young cabin boy raised on the ship Lucky Star is abandoned by the rest of the crew – along with 66 pugs – when their ship is suddenly frozen in a magical “True Winter” that only happens once in a lifetime. In a nearby town, Shen makes a friend in Sika, whose Grandfather delights in telling stories of his participation in a race to the Frozen North during the last True Winter when he was young. Very quickly, Shen and Sika find themselves competing in this winter’s race for a chance to meet the Snowfather and have one wish granted. Using Grandfather’s old sled and their team of pugs to drive it (adorably drawn with big, buggy eyes and tiny teal sweaters), they face stiff competition, a half-frozen Kraken, noodle-loving Yetis, and fifty kinds of magical snow. It’s a fun, silly ride, and the duo’s good sportsmanship and care for their fellow racers means they triumph in the end. The Snowfather’s magic can’t help Sika, who wished for her Grandfather to be well again, but, as he tells her, his stories will never die.
Delightfully illustrated in black, white, and teal, "Pugs of the Frozen North" is a fun winter story with a sweet message.

Two gray squirrels are excited to have their cousin Momo stay for a visit and show off his cool abilities. He is a flying squirrel! But when Momo is shy and plays all their games wrong – eating the acorns used in Acorn-Pong, seeking small plants and bugs to photograph during hide-and-seek, and dressing as the Muffin Man to play superheroes – the two declare they should have invited Stinky George instead. A sad Momo is ready to leave when his cousins have a change of heart and learn that playing Momo’s way can be fun too. OHora’s illustrations are bright and stylized with strong lines that show off the squirrels’ feelings. Momo stands out with his striped sweat bands and sneakers.
A cute picture book with a positive message about acceptance and trying new things, "My Cousin Momo" is both short enough for a toddler story time and engaging enough to interest older kids.

Every story has two sides and "An Ember in the Ashes" is no different. Laia and her brother strive to just survive under the Marital Empire rule. Living with her grandmother, Laia knows that less the Empire sees them the better. Her brother is arrested for crimes against the government and Laia is offered the opportunity to help gain his release. There is one catch: She must infiltrate the very people she hates the most. She agrees to spy on the Martial Empire from within to help the rebels find a way to topple this brutal government. This assignment makes life even more difficult for Laia until she meets a top soldier from the training school, Elias, who hates the very laws he must enforce. Together they realize they are fighting for the same cause and every choice they make could bring them closer to destroying the Marital Empire.

This is definitely a high school level book due to the content and violence. I would consider, "An Ember in the Ashes" to be a dark read with ample amounts of violence and implied or threatened rape towards Laia and other women slaves.

Ruby Redfort, the quirky, schoolgirl finds herself in tricky situations more often than not. As a secret agent for Spectrum 8, she works for LB. Although, LB was reluctant to use her, Ruby was able to blunder her way through and help resolve many cases that the older agents could not handle.
Survival in the wilderness training and perfume thieves keep Ruby on her toes as Hitch, her family butler tries to keep her out of trouble.
A fun book for the junior high level reader. Although, some parts could slow the reader down with extra information that is not really needed to keep the story moving along. I would still recommend this book to readers.

Three soon to be graduating seniors gather to spend the night in the recently closed Circle Cinema. Told in alternating chapters from all three perspectives, Bertucci, Olivia and Codman reflect on their friendship. Olivia and Codman shared a kiss, but each wonder if there could ever be more. Bertucci lost his mom to cancer and struggles with depression. This trio is emotionally entertwined yet wonder if they will stay connected after graduation. Bertucci is the mastermind behind the night at the cinema and it quickly gets the feel of a thriller. I kept waiting for Bertucci to harm his friends, but instead he commits suicide where he knows they will find him. The dust jacket notes that this is a Junior Library Guild selection, but I highly doubt it will be popular with it's target audience. The alternating chapters wander deep into the past and parts were challenging to follow. Bertucci's suicide is abrupt and the reader doesn't get his insight or reasons. The dust jacket itself is nondescript and unappealling.
Pass on this one. There are better books on the topic out there.

Lester meets George at school and a friendship slowly grows through a class project where both boys keep data about their dogs awating their arrival at home. George corresponds with Rupert Sheldrake, a biologist and book's co-author, about animal behavior throughout the story. Readers will gather a wealth of information about these differing vehicles, as there are side bars on each two page spread, as well as in-depth descriptive labels. Each vehicle also has numerous flaps to lift, which reveal what the vehicle looks like on the inside. This would make a great gift for children who love police/firefighters/emergency responders.
It would not do well in a library setting though, as the flaps would not last through very many check-outs.

They have to search for their teacher, soon finding him all wrapped up in a leash that was supposed to be for one of the school pets. As they follow their teacher through the Academy on a tour, mysterious things keep happening – they almost get stomped on by a humongous clawed foot, they are almost taken out by a huge meteor and a giant dinosaur smashes through a wall. Dr. Cosmic, their teacher, leaves them each with a school handbook and sets them loose in the Academy’s new exhibit – a prehistoric landscape complete with robotic dinosaurs. He also gives them a puzzle to solve while he continues searching for the lost school pet. The monster kids use their handbooks (that open up to reveal all sorts of nifty gadgets, including a computer) to help them find clues to solve the Dr.’s puzzle. When the Academy’s loose pet, an ostrich named Oscar, hits the exhibit computer system switch and switches all the robotic dinosaurs from ‘Safe’ to ‘Live’ mode, crazier than usual mayhem ensues!

Set in the ocean, the storyline follows a young crab that is having a really bad day and his mother’s intuitive descriptions of how he’s feeling, with confirmation from her that those feelings are okay. From “Some days you can be a friendly dolphin with a squeaky laugh”…”and some days you can be a CRAB!” to “When you feel MAD like an eel that ZAPS at whatever it sees”…”then you are a CRAB – a hard-shelled, sand-in-your-claws crabby CRAB!” But she tells him not to worry; sometimes she’s a crabby crab, too. Using different ocean creatures to describe differing feelings, Mother Crab finally pulls young crab out of his crabbiness – back to his happy, funny, silly personality again. The tissue paper, paint and Photoshop illustrations are fun, colorful and extremely expressive – the perfect fit to showcase the moods and feelings of the young crab.

Abby tries to deny it and her swimming star boyfriend, Connor, does not know its seriousness. Abby is devastated when a second opinion confirms the diagnosis. Connor gets worried about her condition and stops before things get too far. Their relationship comes to an abrupt end and Abby finds herself liking another teammate, Alec, who is interested in Abby as whole person, not just a swimming star. Abby secretly continues training and despite the warning signs, and the fact her coach has dropped her from the team, tries to get herself to the state meet. Along the way she collapses and comes to the realization that her competitive swim days are over. The story does contain sexual situations and underage drinking.

Verity begins spying on the magisters for the rebels, but soon discovers that her "friendships" are nothing more than scams just to get information from her. Verity's own secret, being half normal and half magister, puts her own life in danger and she must decide whom to trust.
This is a fun steampunk style novel that will appeal to upper middle school and high school girls.

He is shot and she leaves him at a hospital. A good combination of middle school drama, mild romance and staying true to yourself. My middle school girls have thoroughly enjoyed the previous installments.

Jack & Annie travel to Nome, Alaska in 1925 on a mission to help Balto make his famous diphtheria serum run. They learn about dog sledding and help save lives. This book will be a good recommendation for students who love the Balto and Togo stories. It is also an introduction to the sport of dog sledding.
As always, Magic Tree House books deliver. The story is fun and interesting to read. Our students enjoy reading the many books in this series, and animal lovers will particularly enjoy this one.
Reading enjoyment and historical reference.

Dogsledding and Extreme Sports

This Magic Tree House "Fact Tracker" introduces us to dogsledding as a present day sport. It also covers the development of the Iditarod and includes several people who have become champions. In addition to dogsledding several other extreme sports are discussed such as free climbers, Iron men, marathon runners and extreme swimmers. I learned quite a bit about the X-Games and the different competitors.
This is a very high-interest subject material. Our students will enjoy reading this selection.
As a non-fiction book, our students will learn about the various sports. It will be of particular interest to reluctant readers who may find the subject matter compelling.

This is a "Step into Reading" book. It discusses four stories of American ghosts. The stories include a brief background of the hauntings and how they developed. It may be a bit on the scary side for some students and I will place a computer alert to remind me to discuss this potential problem.
This book is written for our struggling readers with a high interest subject matter. Students will be drawn to it, and will be able to have success reading it.
Success for struggling readers cannot be over-valued. This book will assist with reading skills while entertaining the student.

The 12 year old main character is a young girl who loves to cook. In this sequel to All Four Stars, Gladys is secretly writing food reviews for a N.Y. newspaper. She struggles to juggle her job, maintain friendships, and attend a summer camp. Gladys has a mature outlook when dealing with friends and is able to see beyond the fronts they project. Her knowledge and abilities in the kitchen are very advanced and sophisticated.
This is an enjoyable read and will encourage writing as well as cooking. Even though it is a sequel, it stands alone as a first read.
