1FRIWhat are Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)?🩸 Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a rare group of bone marrow failure disorders that occur on average by age 70 and cause the body to stop producing a sufficient number of healthy, normal blood cells in the bone marrow. This results in low numbers of one or more types of cells in the blood and is considered a type of cancer.
The course of the disease can vary greatly: In some people, the disease worsens within a few months of diagnosis, while others experience relatively few issues over several decades.

4MONWhat causes MDS?🩸 In the vast majority of MDS cases, the cause of the diseases is unknown. This is called Primary MDS. However, MDS can sometimes occur as a result of other factors such as radiation, chemotherapy or exposure to certain chemicals like benzene. This is considered Secondary MDS. MDS also occurs more often in older people, and some forms of MDS are associated with an increased risk of developing acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

🩸 MDS occurs when the production of blood cells is disrupted, which impairs or interrupts the maturation of blood cells. Depending on the causes, it can be classified as primary or secondary. 🔗 https://www.mds-alliance.org/blood-cancer-awareness-month-2023/

8FRIWhat are the different types of MDS?🩸 Depending on which blood cell type is affected in what way, MDS can be categorized into 6 types:
MDS with single lineage dysplasia (MDS-SLD)
- Lower numbers of a single type of blood cells (red, white or platelets).
MDS with multilineage dysplasia (MDS-MLD)
- Lower numbers of multiple types of blood cells.
MDS with ring sideroblasts (MDS-RS)
- Lower numbers of red blood cells and presence of iron rings.
MDS with excess blasts (MDS-EB)
- Lower numbers of one or multiple blood cell types and increased number of immature blood cells (blasts).
MDS with Isolated del(5q)
- Lower numbers of red blood cells caused by a chromosomal change called del(5q).
Myelodysplastic syndrome unclassified (MDS-U)
- Any type of MDS that does not fit into one of the above groups.

13WEDDiagnosis🩸 MDS is usually diagnosed when a patient is evaluated for low blood counts, although some MDS patients may show an elevated white blood cell count, platelet count, or both. The defining feature of MDS is a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy showing heavy infiltration with abnormal-looking bone marrow cells.

MDS should be considered in any patient with unexplained cytopenias (low blood counts) or clinical findings related to anaemia (insufficient amount of healthy red blood cells), infection or bleeding/bruising, morphologic dysplasia of blood or bone marrow, or unexplained bone marrow failure.

15FRIQuestions to ask your doctor🩸 If you are being treated for MDS, you should feel free to ask any question, no matter how seemingly insignificant. The American Cancer Society has compiled a list of questions to ask your doctor. - supportive medical care to alleviate the problems caused by the disease
- pharmacological therapy to slow down the progression of the disease
- chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant to destroy cancer cells and inject healthy stem cells from a matched donor.

22FRITreatment options🩸 Despite a high median age at diagnosis, it's crucial to consider all viable treatment options: People over 75 may be treated with low intensity therapy or supportive care. However, there is no absolute age limit beyond which high-intensity therapy or transplantation are no longer recommended.

25MONWhy early diagnosis matters🩸 The course MDS can vary greatly: In some people, the disease worsens within a few months of diagnosis, while others experience relatively few issues over several decades. It is therefore critical that GPs are familiar with its symptoms: If you repeatedly treat a patient with symptoms typical of MDS, do not hesitate to refer them to a specialist!

28THUHow can YOU help MDS patients?🩸 Donate blood! Your contribution might save a life. Around 70% of all patients suffering from MDS are anaemic and become dependent on blood transfusions as their disease progresses. Because their anaemia is "refractory," they rely on regular blood transfusions, with many needing red blood cells or platelets several times a month to stay alive. We encourage you to contact your local blood donor organisation to see if you are eligible to donate!
