16 | Hawaiian is a Polynesian language spoken on the islands of Hawaii. After the introduction of the written language by Protestant missionaries in the early 1800s, literacy rapidly grew and Hawaiians became prolific writers. There are thousands upon thousands of pages from newspapers with stories, translations, biographies, news, etc. available to read, many of which have yet to be translated into English. Widespread suppression of the language has led to a sharp decline in the number of speakers. Today the only place where Hawaiian continues to be the first language of the majority of the population is the island of Niihau. | |||||
