In general, I think there have been enough toxic experiences with our game that the current tools and policies do not cover well. As the userbase and number of games increases, dealing with moderation for valve will become a greater challenge. Better tools are important, but having Valve use its power within the system to address the behavior of its customers would be even better. Taking a proactive approach in dealing with habitually abusive users or user groups, so that small indie devs don't have to be the bad guy, would be incredibly helpful.

Even though I agree with Steam's new policy of being open and letting new people in, it used to be that Steam itself brought a substantial amount of sales for indie games just from being there. At that time it made total sense to charge [Valve’s Revenue Share %] for serving the games.

Nowadays, however, and having shipped a game recently ([Game Title], [Month] 2017), I can say that it felt like putting my game on a short and furious popularity contest and lasted on "New & Popular" for 3 days before being buried into obscurity at the avalanche of new games coming out.

I understand that Valve wants games to find their own audience and figure out how to present themselves attractively enough to Steam players to get sales, but if the platform is going to turn into an automated vending machine from my side, I don't see why I'm being charged [Valve’s Revenue Share %] for it.

Again, I respect that Valve is putting effort into improving Steam and that costs money, but the value proposition of the platform (from our side) is massively lower than it used to be, so it would be fair that the share reflects this.

It's pretty clear Valve is able to drive traffic and sales to my game at a far greater rate than I could on my own, so I'd rather they take [Valve's Revenue Share%] of a significant amount than me taking 100% of very little

I don't really have a problem letting lower-sales developers earn a greater rev share, but perhaps that would add incentive to fake game spammers, and could also see the inverse argument that those generating a lot of money for Valve should be able to keep more of it. So I'm mixed.

I think the graduated revshare is really important for making game development more sustainable for smaller developers. It would also be a fairer shake than the current [Valve’s Revenue Share %] revshare, which is not getting smaller developers as many eyeballs as it did in 2013/2014.

With everything being automated or farmed out to users, and even the best and highly promoted independent games falling through the cracks, Steam's last few advantages are eroding - no longer is there any sort of curation or much assistance on anything, and the huge audience doesn't matter if they don't buy our games. Steam taking a [Valve’s Revenue Share %] cut of every sale in order to... not promote games? Have users do the work? Support racist, sexist, hate-filled forums that glorify abuse and allow players to hold developers hostage by rating games poorly? I don't see the value proposition.

Two options for a platform: 1) Help sell our game. You are a publisher whether you like it or not. 2) Or get out of the way. Connect us with our customers and let us own that relationship (and all the revenue). There's a third option which is to grow fat on unearned rents. That works for a little while, but isn't stable.

Power laws result in a few winners and a whole bunch of losers. A totally hands off "Let the market decision" approach means the rich get richer with fewer bigger hits. This is a poisonous ideology because these markets stagnate.

Valve has stopped curating games and are allowing all game content onto the platform. As a result, the value of store in general is going down in a similar fashion to the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Being on Steam will provide no marketing value, which it previously did, and will end up being no different than distributing your game on your own personal website.

Instead of graduated revshare rates, Valve should re-evaluate their revshare based on the value they are providing to the games on their platform. Revshare should change based on Valve providing additional support, features, promotion, etc for a game, not based purely on it's popularity.

Algorithmic-based surfacing of games boosts games that have the budget/expertise to market themselves effectively. It reflects awareness more than quality. Human-based surfacing allows 'hidden gems' to break through, adding variety to the Steam marketplace and potentially reflects quality more than awareness. A balance of the two would be preferable to those of us without the budget for a large amount of marketing.

Not really sure I like Steamspy and their haphazard estimates of game sales in the critical first few months / days post launch. I know influencers are heavily influenced by these numbers despite their own warnings. I think SteamSpy should be shut down, helped, or Steam should make these numbers available, but currently it's kind of a website with too much influence for too little accuracy.

Valve's(understandable) moves towards automation feels like an implicit request to "stop bothering our humans". I suspect they don't want it to feel as unfriendly as that. But it kinda does.

There are many common phases of pre-launch use for steam. It would be nice to codify some of them so it's both easier for developers and developers can be sure they're not abusing the key system. (developer only release, close friend testing, limited public testing, crowdfunding backer testing, crowdfunding backer release, etc.)

I have different publishers for titles I administer on Steam. Improvements to help be better understand my reporting and verify-ably communicate those reports to them would be great.

Their backend is powerful, but it's big and sprawling and it's hard to find somethings sometimes. It's obvious it's grown organically over the years and there have been some efforts to unify and improve, but it could use another pass on how all the pieces fit together.

Valve's cut remaining at [Valve’s Revenue Share %] is not in line with the fact that storefront saturation continues to rise. The end result of the decline in quality control and opening up the floodgates with Steam Direct is looking like the trashfire that is the Apple AppStore.

Featuring opportunities becoming scarcer and scarcer with hidden heuristics as to what does and doesn't get featured is also not assisting quality developers get the opportunities deserving of their efforts.

If Valve doesn't feel they can prevent the steep decline of value their storefront provides, especially with competitors popping up around the place, Valve's [Valve’s Revenue Share %] cut should be altered to reflect this.

It's absolute madness that Steam users can delete developer comments on reviews of their own games.

The ability to message forum users is sorely needed.

An editorial pick would be wonderful, kind of like an Apple Editor's pick, if Steam had a daily Steam's pick of the day, adding another opportunity to feature games. Also provide the ability to recommend another three games, on a game's Steam Store Page, so we can cross-promote.

Steam Reviews should NOT be presented on a page based on up-votes, our game has an 85%+ score but our Steam page is almost always red with negative reviews because only negative reviews get up votes. Its really stupid. A game's Steam page should have a spread of negative and positive reviews based on their % of negative vs positive reviews.

More sales data on marketplace trade fees, and Inventory sales, its near impossible to get any good data from Steam's backend on these areas and there are bugs in the reporting for inventory items that is hugely annoying.

Also an export to printer friendly feature for financial reporting would be huge, as every dev/publisher has to currently copy paste format or screen capture it every month for their own accounting/reporting.

I'm not super sure if the "graduated revshare" implies valve's cut scaling up or down with sales volume. Toxic user tools are probably the thing we care most about on this list -- especially users being able to delete developer comments from their reviews. It creates a situation where a potential buyer reading a review can't tell the difference between a review I ignore and one I try to address, and that's not great.

Regarding the 'do they earn their [Valve’s Revenue Share %], I guess it depends on how much value we can assign to the store infrastructure and having access to steam customers. So if we say the charge is 30% for that then certainly they earn it. However, I'd agree more strongly about earning the [Valve’s Revenue Share %] if they had dedicated developer support people that were assigned to partners with a 24-hour response time.
