Sleep disturbance as a symptom of chronic back painAbout: An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from some form of chronic pain. Studies of chronic pain patients show that one of the main complaints in 50–88% of patients is difficulty with sleep. Commonly reported sleep disturbances include difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, and feeling rested in the mornings. Consistent disturbances lead to clinically significant insomnia, defined as sleep disturbance which causes stress and/or impaired daily function for at least one month. Insomnia may also result in daytime fatigue; therefore, improvements in insomnia symptoms often correlate with less fatigue and less pain. Taken together, issues with sleep are recognized to decrease emotional, physical, functional, and social quality of life. REM sleep behavior disorders in neurodegenerative diseasesREM sleep behavior disorders (RBDs) are a subset of parasomnias that involve abnormal behaviour in the REM phase of sleep, usually manifested as the sleeper "acting out" their dream as a result of a lack of sleep paralysis. What makes RBDs especially noteworthy is their association with numerous neurological diseases, ranging from narcolepsy to stroke. Most importantly, they have a strong association with neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy. This article should explore the possible pathophysiology of RBDs and their correlation with neurodegenerative diseases, as well as discuss the possibility of RBD as a predictive tool for these diseases.

Chronic fatigue syndrome – what we know and what can be doneChronic fatigue syndrome is a somewhat mysterious medical condition. It is characterized by long-term fatigue and other symptoms (impaired memory and concentration, post-exertional malaise, myalgia, arthralgia, unrefreshing sleep, etc.) that can have debilitating consequences on daily functioning of the patient. This article should explore what is the definition of chronic fatigue syndrome, is myalgic encephalomyelitis its synonym or a different entity, as well as what is known so far about its pathophysiology and what treatment options are available.
