| ๐๐ป | Hi! I'm Jamie. I'm a design-minded developer. I work as a Software Engineer at Stripe. Prior to that I ran my own studio, Arbitrary, and before that I was Technical Director at Big Spaceship. I live in the Bay Area halfway between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay with my wonderful wife Hilary and daughters, Nola and Molly. |
| ๐ | I like wearing a lot of different hats. I'm a generalist programmer, full stack developer, iOS developer and creative director. I'm not particularly passionate about a specific language or framework. My focus is on polished user experience. |
| If I'm known for anything, it's my time at Big Spaceship. While there I led development on projects like NikeAir.com and Skittles.com. I also helped build out + manage a team of amazing coders, both in size and subject matter expertise.
| I'm proud of my ability to learn new technologies quickly, help define requirements where there are none, and invent polished user interface mechanics. I love being a part of the creative process.
| ๐ | My most rewarding work revolves around teaching and mentorship. While in New York I taught code and prototyping in the MFA Design + Technology program at Parsons. I carried that kind of teaching in the Design BA program at the University of San Francisco. More recently I've been developing a curriculum of my own around web development and prototyping. |
| My work as an advisor goes beyond my colleagues, employees, contractors and students. I've also advised early-stage startups at TechStars and Bolt. Some companies I've advised include Owlet, Enteriv, Safehub and Keen Home.
| ๐ | I love helping people learn. I've written several articles about prototyping and designer/developer collaboration. I also write about anxiety and imposter syndrome, since I suffer from both of those myself. |
| โ๏ธ | I'm a big believer in local food - San Francisco cannot make a good bagel any better than New York can make a decent loaf of sourdough bread. I'm an avid fan of coffee. I roast my own beans at home using a 1980s popcorn machine. I do the whole fancy pourover thing... it's like my own personal Blue Bottle here. |
