what was the exact number of that rantanen figure? cause i heard it was a decent range, which tells me the larger one probably had some weird stuff like no nmc at all or something. honestly, the leafs would be able to sneak them both under the cap. think people are underrating the cap space we have. would be jt gone though (unless he signs for very little and a knies bridge).

we’ll have like 17-18 mill in space to sign just jt and knies. and the rest of our team is already signed (robertson is the only other guy we’d have to sign but obv we’d just have to trade him). and we didn’t even fully retain on laughton and carlo. if we got rantanen we’d have spent some extra picks and got them fully retained. that 17-18 mil number could get up to close to 20 with that and really going barebones in the bottom six (jarnkrok and kampf gone).

i think the current group ends up being a bit better than the 2023 group (tanev > brodie). although it remains to be seen how rielly - carlo compares to rielly - schenn. oel helps solidify the bottom pair considerably, but if there's injuries, the 2023 group was deeper.

benning or mermis haven't really played nhl hockey at all this season, which is less than ideal for your 8d (i don't think hakanpaa is coming back).

but at the end of the day, the current group should be better on paper. what really is troublesome is analytically this group's defensive results don't show an improvement over previous years, especially in the second half of this season.

maybe it's systems, maybe it's rielly taking a step back. but they need to figure something out over the next few weeks.

uninformed opinion:

1st goal against looks like laugthon getting used to playing a center. he comes off the bench to join the forecheck, but in ends up with a 3v2 against. some confusion as oel is getting off the ice (and would have been able to intercept the puck), and rielly doesn't know what's happening. the it's just a great deflection.

2nd goal was initially a breakdown in coverage caused by jarnkrok/oel. i think oel thinks jarnkrok is trying to pass off carcone, jarnkrok thinks he should stick with it, so they end up 2v1ing a player by the blueline. jarnkrok makes a good attempt to intercept the puck but isn't able too. carlo fails to adapt and maybe thinks tavares is a step behind his man on the other side of the net, leading to a wide open player and a simple tip in.

3rd goal against - i have a hard time parsing what's supposed to happen there but yeah it might be carlo too. seems like mccabe sees the whole situation and reacts at the last moment, and he maybe covering for carlo to pick up that man in front of the net. i was overstepping my knowledge here - but this looks like carlo is more used to a diamond pk (where mccabe might pick up the net front) and we play a box?

i was not able to watch the game last night (puck drop after 11pm my time). from the highlights i watched this morning,  it looked like carlo blown coverage of his guy on 2 of the utah goals. i'm sure he's still trying to mesh with his defense partner but that's rough. any other notable mentions that the highlights missed? such as the benoit fight. zero coverage of that.

i agree with you. big 2 points and you take what you can get!

the margins are super thin in this league. we looked a step behind during the last few games. we are at the tail end of loads of road games and a huge amount of travel the last 13 games.

most of us fans probably don’t want to hear it but that makes a difference. we won tonight because we had the better skill guys but we couldn’t match the effort. that happens sometimes, doesn’t mean we’re a bad team.

it’ll be nice to get tanev back and actually have some practice time for carlo and laughton.

honestly, morgan reilly has been my leafs defenseman pretty much of all time.... grew up on mccabe and kaberle lol we've never had such a good d core as we do now. once we have tanev to take on more minutes i think carlo will easily pick up his play.

pretty much the idea is we traded petr mrazek 3 years ago, and what we got for him (minten) plus additional other stuff (2026 1st and 2025 4th) was then traded for carlo.

i personally am not a fan of trade trees because they're visually confusing and often lack context, but that's what the graphic is trying to show.

trade trees aren't necessarily like that despite what people are saying here but the ripples from those trades carry on for years. we had minten because of the mrazek trade and we traded him for carlo. chicago got 2 assets in that trade 1 was mrazek the other was the player they drafted with our 1st round pick.

then mrazek was traded to detroit later on.

the "limbs" of these trees end when a player becomes a free agent or retires or our good friend future considerations shows up.

steve dangle used to do a youtube series on sportsnets youtube channel about these and it was fascinating to see trades from years and years ago are still kinda branching out because trades keep happening.

so our current d-core is very solid. but past this season i'd like brad to look into orlov to really round it out.

this slots everyone perfectly, obviously cheif can make adjustments with the bottom 4 based on chemistry but that is a very formidable d-core going into next season.

orlov is a really good puck mover who can go up and down the ice and make up for carlos' lack of footspeed and play on the powerplay.

ideally we find a way to move reilly since he dosent fit berube's system and replace him with a cheaper option (hope we find another rhd to play with oel since he's better suited on the left side). move benoit for cap space as well.

i don't think brad is done yet, still a little tinkering that can be done with the back end.

these are all great points, however allow me to play devils advocate. obviously the plan a is to sign marner, but pivoting to bennett and others isn’t the worst idea either.

sign bennett to a contract with deffered salary similar to mccabe. 7.8 x 5 years with 5 million deffered, the adjusted caphit would be 6.8 million.

make a strong offer for marchand, i’d start with a deal similar to patrick kane’s last contract. 5m x 1 year w/ a 2.5m signing bonus.

re-sign tavares to the exact same deal as mccabe, or 6.5m x 4 if he doesn’t want to do the deffered salary.

knies is a bit more of a wild card, i’d offer him 7.125m over 8 years. however the leafs would likely have to increase the aav or reduce the amount of years of the contract. i doubt there would be a short term bridge, but maybe they could compromise and agree to 7.125m over 6 years.

i think this was more due to the fact that berube wanted a shut down pair. rielly cannot do that at all so it was a bit of a mess when they were together as we couldn't play any other pair against top lines. once mccabe and tanev got together it changed the look of the whole defense. now with carlo not having to go up against top lines but just complement rielly, everything sort of falls into place - on paper anyway.

when 34, 16, 88, or 91 is out, the other three can pick up the slack. when tanev is out, it’s just mccabe who plays a similar game. hopefully carlo helps with that.

i think you're quite right about that. tanev has made such a huge impact on our defence this year, he along with mccabe have been spectacular. it's frankly alarming how much having one player out of our lineup has affected results, speaks pretty poorly for our defensive depth. hopefully carlo can help fill tanev's role a bit better as he gets settled in to our team's systems.

i love reilly and always have and i want him to be amazing, i think carlo helps that. once tanev is back and they are the #2 pair i really feel we level up a lot. this is the best d core and goalie tandem of my life and i remember the burns years vividly lol.

laughton, yes. imo carlo is a legitimate hockey trade that we needed. our d is in shambles and we go on losing streaks anytime a single dman gets injured.

that's just not correct. most of the time what tampa has been spending assets on is creating stellar 3rd lines.

for example, nick paul wrecking us for an entire series.

what we needed to spend more time doing is getting younger assets that will be willing to stay like that. carlo and laughton at least have years left in them, and same could be said for mccabe and lafferty (although we traded him).

once they do stay, don't give them protection so we can recoup assets if needed.

agreed. laughton was a terrible trade for a first. i really like carlo and at the price we have him. i'd do that one all day.

tbh, i think the problem with the bottom 6 is that domi and robertson have been huge disappointments this year. streaky and not showing the compete level or good choices. you can throw anyone in there and not sure it'll pay off.

yeah. a lot of the goals that laughton/carlo were on the ice for were communication and systems breakdowns.

it wasn’t because they had a bad turnover or got burned one on one. so for that reason i’m reserving judgment.

philly and boston both crash down on their net way more in their own zone than we do. so in your example laughton probably isn’t used to applying as much high pressure.
