Personal experience builds empathy, awareness and through art, that awareness can become advocacy and action. First, students and teachers need to decide what is intolerable. Social justice happens when the pain of changing becomes less than the pain of staying the same, when something simply must be done. This decision empowers students to do the next right thing, it builds confidence, compassion, imagination and productivity. It helps teach them that hope is not a strategy and their greatest growth occurs outside their artistic comfort zone. But how do you get students to identify causes, turn setbacks into set ups, and a mess into a message? By teaching them that they are powerful human rights artists because they are powerful human beings who can become agents of change.
