As a second year employee I will only have 120 hours of sick leave. HR will allow me to use sick leave for teaching days only which will bring me to about 5 weeks of paid leave. This does mean that I’m still officially “on duty” for research and service requirements. The department has been more supportive in verbal negotiations, of my two courses 1 will be a “second 8-week” course, and the other will be taught by my TA for the first few weeks. They likely will not expect much from me and be accommodating in terms of actual service and research productivity.

Official policy is 12 weeks paid leave. Since the semester is 16 weeks, this meant that I did not teach the fall after my baby was born (over summer). On return from leave, the expectation is that faculty will be full time for the remainder of the semester and in place of teaching will take on additional service. Both parents are eligible to take 12 weeks of paid leave within the first year of the child's life (or within a year of adoption or fostering).
Leave is standard, deates negotiated with HR. 1 yr tenure clock extension is standard, but must be requested from the dean of CAS

Our leave is tied to when you deliver. I delivered during the semester, so had full relief from teaching AND service/admin work all semester. If birth occurs outside semester, then it's a 3 course release (we teach 3-3) and you can choose when to take the courses. You have 6 weeks leave from service/admin if you deliver outside the semester, and if you want a full-semester administrative leave in that case, there's a pay cut. I could have extended my clock but didn't feel like I needed to.

Tulane UniversityPolitical ScienceMirya Holman10/7/20172016Parental2 courses10NoNoAvailableLeave is technically teaching only and must be applied for to the Dean. The faculty gets the semester off teaching if it is within 6 weeks of the semester - so someone could deliver during the summer and not get leave. The dean normally grants leave in these circumstances though. Tenure clock stoppage is available but not automatic.
