We work towards sustainability and good land stewardship on our farm by encouraging, as best we can, a rich, full and vibrant soil ecosystem, relying primarily on cover crops for fertility, by keeping the soil covered as much as we can and by tilling and disturbing the soil as little as we can. Our first defense in term of insects and diseases on the farm is our healthy soil and healthy plants. Before picking up the spray nozzle, we turn to physical barriers and modifying planting times, locations and growing methods to deal with both insect pests and diseases. We will pick off insects if feasible. And if necessary, we simply stop growing the crops that just seem to need a lot of spraying.

We are Certified Naturally Grown, which is a peer to peer certification organization that uses most, if not all, the same standards at the USDA certification but without a lot of the paper work. Our primary fertilizer is cover cropping and compost. We have found, after many years of growing, vigorous and resistant varieties that do well in our area with minimal intervention. We also use physical barriers such as row covers to prevent insect damage. We use pesticides and fungicides very sparingly and as a last resort to deal with insects and disease.

All OMRI Certified Products: Harmony 5-4-3, lime, phosphorus
OMRI Products: Soil Mix, kelp meal, bone meal, blood meal, liquid fish fertilizer.
We follow the National Organic Program standards. While insecticides such as Pyganic is a broad spectrum spray, our process is not to spray when our crops are flowering so as not to hurt our pollinators. Many times we risk losing our crop over spraying; however, if we do want to save a crop, we spray evenings when the pollinators are not feeding. We only use OMRI sprays that have a short residual period so they break down in the environment quickly with sunlight. We typically only spray a handful of times over a season.

We strive to meet or exceed the requirements to be a "certified" organic grower. The a a few areas where our farm in not in compliance with these requirements. We use of a corn-based biofilm that we put on our raised bed. Ironically, using a petroleum based film is allowed in certified operations but the biodegradable corn-based film is not. We only use GMO-free seeds, but we do use some seeds that are not marketed as "organic". We do not use any treated seeds for our vegetable or flower crops. We select seed varieties that perform well in our challenging growing environment that do not require any synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or fungicides. The proper plant varieties allow us to only use organic approved products to manage the health and vigor of our vegetables, fruits, mushrooms and flowers. We have used cover crop seed that has been treated with synthetic compounds, but we do everything we can to source cover crop seeds that are not treated.
