Aggie House hopes to fill the need for additional emergency shelter options for students, while also taking an innovative approach of being community-based, as well as volunteer and student-led. Our goal is to use a peer-run model to inspire and empower shelter volunteers to become leaders in social justice. Aggie Trading PostSustainability Clothing, Activity, CommunityAggie Trading Post is the second branch to open on a college campus, following the mission and values of Isla Vista Trading Post at UC Santa Barbara. We host trading events where community members exchange clothing, establishing a small-scale circular economy. Events have a "three for free" policy, allowing attendees to take up to three items, regardless of if they donated clothes. Aggie Trading Post strives to create a more environmentally-concious, interconnected community through a daily commodity: clothing. Art and the Oceans: Marine Conservation Through Writing, Painting, and PhotographyEnvironmentalArt, Activity, CommunityWith the dire effects humans are having on the planet, ocean health is severely declining. Through art, we can promote sustainable living and raise awareness of the importance of healthy, biologically diverse seas. We fundraise, hold product drives, and host fun packing parties to put together care packages and deliver requested products to these distribution partners. Environmental Project at UC DavisEnvironmentalActivity, Community, Professional, CompetitionThe Environmental Project Team builds a water treatment system for the competition but also builds knowledge, confidence, and friendships. Participants in the Environmental Project get exposure to the Environmental Engineering field; providing practical engineering design experience, project management skills, teamwork, and many other skills not found in school. During the competition, the project is judged on sustainability, treatment efficiency, cost, and an oral presentation. Team members conduct research into possible water treatment technologies, test raw and treated water, design and construct the water treatment system, and prepare a presentation. Our hopes are to improve the retention rate of these students pursuing health careers. We plan to do so in several different ways. One way is to provide guidance to club members in the form of mentorship and presentations (provided by health professionals, health professions students, etc.). I.H.A also plans to provide enriching opportunities through outreach experiences to Native communities and community event participation in areas such as Sacramento as well as surrounding areas. This will allow club members to foster relationships with neighboring Native communities in order to build connections/networks and help mold students into well-rounded future health professionals. Pilipinx Americans in Science and EngineeringSustainabilityEquity, Community, ProfessionalPASE is a student-run organization at the University of California, Davis that orients students of similar cultural and/or educational backgrounds through the academic rigors of engineering and the sciences. Our goal is to assist members grow in their college careers. Academic Support. We have members who are more than willing to give advice on what classes to take and on ways to succeed in a particular class. Furthermore, we offer an extensive collection of exam files that covers most areas of engineering and the physical sciences. Professional Preparation. We prepare our members for the professional world by offering various workshops, such as resume and mock interview workshops. We also have alumni members who share their experiences about their careers and life after college. In addition, we hold 2 exploratory events centered around a) Major and internship exploration and b) Intersecting identities in STEM-related fields. Social Opportunities. We hold many social events throughout the year like movie nights, video game tournaments, and karaoke nights. We want students to know where and how they can obtain cheaper, more sustainable foods. This is done by spreading information regarding existing systems/resources that the school provides to students (ASUCD Pantry and the Aggie Compass Basic Needs Center), nonprofits (Davis Night Market and Freedge), and coupons/sales in groceries and stores that sell food. Another goal is to teach students how to cook the basics, and learning recipies that can easily fit into their schedule, or foods that can be eaten hours after being made (like bentos). Our goal is to foster a better understanding of our native biodiversity. We hope to increase the sustainability of Davis’s urban ecosystem by planting native, drought tolerant species. Increasing local plant biodiversity can provide better habitat for insects, and by extension, broad reaching ecosystems.
