Physical DescriptionBackground

Just about as manly as your average flower-selling girl, if there’s one thing Shen Leikong isn’t, it’s ‘imposing’. Or, well, ‘bearded’.
It doesn’t help his manly image that he -does- seem to spend a fair bit of his time petting and brushing fluffy vulpix fur.

Looking closer will reveal discordant notes, though: a calloused dominant hand from training in the use of the sword since the youngest age, and a net of endless pale, light scars - mainly on his forearms, but there’s at least one on his forehead and another at the side of his neck - as reminders of every lesson learned during real-weapons sparring.

His left palm even has a vivid reminder of his first attempts at the “Flickering Flower Meditation” - Which is fancy talk for “Hold this lit candle in your hand and sit there meditating until the pain makes you scream.” Learning to properly control fire can be a painful task.

He dresses in high-quality clothes, mostly in the tones of red and black. The materials and craftsmanship used point at at a noble - or at least rich - character, but the design is clean, easy to walk in and with plenty of loose room and hidden pockets to keep -stuff- into.
The Shen family has a long and colorful history with the Fire Temple: rumors say it was founded during ancient times by a runaway nameless monk who fell in love with a fox spirit in human form, and developed a wholly new martial art that mixed his own explosive techniques with the trickery of the spirit.

Of course, that is more legend than history and nobody knows what exactly happened so far back. The only thing that matters is that now the family is essentially a part of the Fire Temple - their martial arts are (supposedly) shared freely with everyone else in the Temple, and it’s there that every talented youth receives martial arts training

Leikong was one such talented youths - perhaps the best in his generation. Of course it did take a bit of pain to get there, but that’s a trifling detail: his talent at manipulating fire Qi was judged insufficient to properly represent a potential candidate for future head of the family, and as such the doctors proceeded to fix things: the procedures needed to free the flow of Qi through his meridians left him with a small collection of not-yet-completely-healed burn scars, but it worked.

At the temple he learned plentiful ways to punch people, while at home his studies focused on courtly behavior, fine arts and dirty family secrets. Dirty family secrets like the fact that he had a brother, a brother almost ten years older than him. A brother currently fighting for entrance in the “top-ten most wanted dead by everyone ever” list. A brother that was his responsibility to end without much fuss - because family’s dirty laundry should be washed in the family.

And because if the Fire Temple caught wind of the fact that the fast-growing sect of ice-cold marauders has connections to the Shen family they might stop turning a blind eye to their attempt to evolving their martial arts to prevent a similar event from happening again.

Always smiling, always playful, always teasing; building upon his harmless appearance, his behavior is yet another weapon to keep others from properly gauging his abilities: just like his combat school teaches, any trick is fair to lead to an opponent lowering his guard.

Of course, just like his appearance it’s not a -completely- artificial personality: that would be almost impossible to keep up believably. He really is a playful person - he just has been trained to channel most of his negative emotions in that direction too instead of letting them show.

Being human, the mask can crumble when tackling issues really dear to him: chats about his brother from someone who know the whole story are unlikely to see him smile.
-Learning and mastering all the variants of The Sutra of Smoke and Deception - failing that, obtaining pokémon representatives of the different substyles to help him learn the differences.

-Stopping his brother: he barely remembers him, since even when Qiang wasn’t gone yet they spent most of their time separated… but blood still runs thicker than water, and Leikong does feel like stopping him is his responsibility.

-Obtain enough fame and respect to rise to the position of family head - if only to discover just how many more dirty secrets the Shen family has been hiding for generations: he doesn’t particularly care for power, but he fears there might be more like his brother hidden in the dark corners of history.

-Drink, celebrate life and be merry: despite his very serious long-term objectives, he -is- still a seventeen years old who just got out of long years of hard training - now he has an important job, but also more free time than he ever had, and he fully intends to use it.
Besides, a lot of his training -did- involve preparations for court life, which includes alcohol resistance.

The Sutra of Smoke and Deception
More commonly known as “The Fox-Fire Dance”, this martial art’s primary inspiration are pokémon of the Vulpix and Fennekin line. The basic tenet of the martial art is weakening of the opponent through tricks, feints and mind-games until he shows an opening, then hitting that opening with an overwhelming attack.

In time, it spawned two splinter arts, which some might go as far as to consider “heretical” or “impure”; the first (“The All-Consuming Vitriol Flame”) takes a lesson from Houndours and mixes poison and hidden weapons into the art, claiming you don’t -really- need a finishing strike if the opponent is deprived of any chance to fight back.

The second (“The Flame of Illusory Hope”) learns from Litwicks and puts a heavy focus on stealth and mind-games: the perfect expression of that path would be leading an enemy to self-destruction without them ever knowing they were in a fight.

Yet a third - even smaller - subschool claims that everyone else is wrong, and that since the school started by imitating fox-like pokémon the proper way to advance it is by following the original trend and integrate the arts of the best illusionists of all: Zoruas and Zoroarks. However, they have yet to act on this theory

The Illusory Ice Mirror
Also known as "The Blood-Drenched Mirror" due to the ruthlessness of most of its practitioners, this is the style of Leikong’s brother Shen Qiang and of the sect he founded - The Hungry Ice Ghosts.
It’s a Yin-aspected mirror to The Sutra of Smoke and Deception, using ice, crippling fear and life-leeching secret techniques as its main tricks; so far, nobody found a way to practice it without permanently crippling their own ability to circulate Yang-aspected Qi and turning into sociopathic, unfeeling monsters as a direct consequence.

Earth-piercing spear-hand
Hong Fanlei’s style - martial arts can hardly get any more direct than this: based on excadrills, this style emphasizes punches (at first) and four-fingers piercing strikes (after an insane amount of body conditioning). Kicks are almost completely unheard of, as legs are used to maintain the solid foundation needed to deliver full power with every strike.
Essentially: if your punch doesn’t go clean through rock, you’re not punching hard enough. Same if you don’t down your opponent with a single strike.
It’s actually an incredibly dangerous style and pretty hard to test in sparring situations, as the goal is to punch -through- the opponent, not -at- him.
Future Class Options - Well, three classes out of four are picked, so he doesn't have a lot of wiggle room - moreover, he wants a LOT of stuff from those classes, so he'll probably stay there for a while more. But just for the record, Hunter is currently the most likely fourth pick.

Potential connection changes - fire fits him pretty well, but let's see where the plot leads. After all he has built-in reasons to swap to ghost or dark already.

Everybody wants to be a messiah - pondering things about Reshiram, but low priority.

Shen Qiang, the Starving Tiger of Shuzheng
Older brother and Nemesis
Born anemic and sickly but with an innate talent for martial arts, it was revealed that his disease was caused by an almost complete inability to breathe and circulate Yang-Aspected Qi. Some training and a careful way of living would have allowed him to at least carry on and live life as a normal person, but he aggravated the issue in his attempts at learning the family’s martial art: by forcing his predominantly Yin-aspected Qi where Yang should have been he broke -something- and was never whole again.

On one hand, this allowed him to develop a Yin-aspected martial art mirror to the Sutra of Smoke and Deception: The Illusory Ice Mirror.
On the other, it completely destroyed his ability to respire Yang Qi naturally - turning him into an unfeeling, inhuman monster who needs to sap the warmth of those around himself just to survive. He's officially dead and does nothing to disprove that myth: it's been years since he used any name other than "Starving Tiger"

Hong Fanlei
Friend, rival and sister at the temple
Friend and rival from the fire temple, she fits the stereotypes to a T, and fights (and lives) in the most straightforward, direct manner one can possibly imagine. So far their record of victories against each other in unofficial combat is roughly even - but she tends to lose her cool in official matches, especially if judging or spectators are involved, leading to an abyssal difference in their ‘official’ ranking.

Feng Jian
Partner in crime and brother at the temple
Flashy. Flamboyant. Always up for trouble. How -else- would someone whose martial arts style is based on Hawlucha be?
Every single punishment Shen incurred at the temple for breaking some stuffy, boring rule, it was with Feng. The day he had to leave the temple to take care of family problems they swore eternal brotherhood - that sure won’t get Shen entangled in even more problems, will it?

Shen Honglan

Mother and Sifu
A good 70% of the practitioners of the fox-fire dance are female, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the deepest secrets of the art are shared matrilineally. Leikong doesn’t have sisters, however, so it falls to him.
...Now, if only she just -stopped- disguising ‘you really should get married to this adorable girl’ meetings as martial arts matches.
He falls for it every time.
