GEM PREP APPROVED INSTRUCTIONAL GRADE-LEVEL NOVELS
2
All learning materials are reviewed and adopted by the Gem Prep Curriculum Implementation and Adoption Committee prior to classroom implementation. Please complete the Instructional Novel Approval Request if you would like the committee to review a book or novel for approval. If a teacher or parent would like the committee to review an approved novel because it is viewed as harmful to minors, please complete the Curriculum Review Request form.

Classroom teachers can ONLY use novels for instruction on their grade-level approved list OR novels from grades BELOW THEM.

Background Information
Instructional novels are used during small group guided reading rotations which are scheduled for 30 minutes (per group) each day. Ideally, this daily group time is used to interact with and practice the skills found in ELA standards and dig deep into the text. Rather than just rush through content, we really want scholars to engage with comprehension strategies through discussions, written responses, and general practice with guided questions, thinking maps, etc. (view example unit plan). Of course, pacing depends on the grade level and the length of the novel. However, we estimate that guided reading small groups typically go through approximately one novel per quarter to allow time for small sections of daily reading, comprehension strategies (4-3-2-1, BUMPS, etc.), writing, and time to balance novels with nonfiction passages.
To ensure teachers have the materials they need, we provided teachers with science and history leveled readers, teacher-selected guided reading group novel sets, and access to digital libraries via Sora and Common Lit. For example, each 3rd-grade teacher was provided with 11 guided reading novel sets to use for guided reading groups (Approved Instructional Novels), access to novel sets from grades K-2, ScienceFusion readers, myWorld readers, and full access to the CommonLit library including book pairings, novel units, and a wide variety of text options. Please complete this form if the resources provided to your grade level don't meet a specific skill or standard.
