It's my understanding that the city was working with organizations such as the Alliance for Downtown New York, the South Street Seaport Museum, the Berkshire County Historical Society, and the Melville Society to honor author Herman Melville's connection to the Battery and surrounding area. This included installing a bust of Melville at 17 State Street, the location where he was born. Barbara Christen of the Alliance for Downtown New York helped plan events spotlighting the bust, which included the "incorporation in three concentric arcs of 18 foot letters in the concrete of the newly renovated plaza in front of Pier A at Battery Park." The planned text was going to be taken from Moby-Dick about the Battery, supposed to be installed around September 1996. I don't believe the quote ever became part of Pier A, but I would like any information that BPCA has about the planned installation and why it never occurred.
