Very thought-provoking and interesting class. Discussions were facilitated well and leading the class discussions gave everyone a chance to participate.

I participated frequently and attended almost all the classes. This was not my first choice class but Professor Tan made it interesting and fun!

Professor Tan is a great addition to Hamilton! Always willing to help, quick to respond to emails, and always available to meet, truly wish every Hamilton prof was like Tan!

Great effectiveness. Class discussions gave people chances to participate, critical discussions reinforced what we learned in class, and discussion leads challenged you to think critically about the paper.

There was a very welcoming learning environment. Students are encouraged to participate and Professor Tan was very helpful in aiding students to think through certain things.

I put forth significant effort in this class both in and out of class. There was a good amount of work and we were required to maintain engagement in the course materials.

Professor Tan gave very effective comments on returned work, although I do wish it was done a bit more promptly. Some assignments were not graded in a very timely manner, although it was highly effective once returned.

Professor Tan was very interactive with students both inside and outside of class. He was always available for meeting or quick questions after class and the meetings were highly effective.

This was a very high quality course. I was quite frustrated that I was unable to take financial economics. But the readings that we did for this course were interesting and I enjoyed them.

Professor Tan was very effective. He was engaging and created course work that was interesting for students. Specifically, he asked what we were interested in the beginning of the semester, and added a paper on Unions after hearing that many students were interested in it.

The course covered a range of topics and gave me the opportunity to develop my understanding of the subject. The instructor organized the material in a way that was generally easy to follow.

I attended class regularly and completed the assigned work throughout the semester. I came in with some prior interest in the subject and tried to engage with the material as it was presented.

Feedback on assignments was provided in a reasonable timeframe and gave me a sense of where I stood in the course. The grading standards were consistent with expectations set at the start of the semester.

The instructor was approachable and willing to answer questions during class. Communication was clear and I felt comfortable asking for clarification when needed.

The course was well-structured and covered material relevant to the subject area. It was a reasonable use of my time as part of my broader coursework.

The instructor was knowledgeable about the subject and presented the material competently. Overall I felt the course met the goals outlined at the beginning of the semester.

I think the course is very thought-provoking. Classmates are attentive and conversational. Communication is encouraged, and all are very thoughtful. I think the instructor did a great job facilitating class collaboration. I really enjoyed taking this course.

Every work returned has clear annotations and good suggestions. Sometimes I wish our work could be turned back a little earlier, but in general, I think the work returned has high-quality comments/suggestions.

I believe the course is very high quality and well structured. I enjoyed reading papers in depth, having meaningful class conversations, and leading conversations. I think this course cultivates a variety of skills, including critical thinking, oral expression, and economic techniques.

This course was very thought-provoking and required us to think critically for a set of 11 papers. It has definitely improved my critical thinking skills and communication skills. In addition, although there was not too much writing, my writing skills have improved too.

I always attended class and aimed to participate at least a few times for each lesson. There was not too much going on outside class except critical summaries and the occasional empirical assignment. I have been taking economics for a while now and I needed this course for a data science requirement.

The grading has been a bit slow for this course, especially the empirical assignments, however the feedback is very meaningful, which is good. He also set a good standard for our work.

The instructor had plentiful office hours and always took questions. In addition, he was very clear in his speech.

Overall, just like 266, this instructor is very effective as he communicates course material very well, has a lot of office hours, always takes questions, and makes his standards very clear.

This was a great learning environment where we really engaged with different papers like I hadn't before. It was nice to get to take risks in papers and point out potential flaws. Questions were always encouraged which I really appreciated.

I went to every class and participated. I went to office hours for help with writing assignments also. I was not extremely interested in labor economics prior, but somewhat interested.

He was timely in getting stuff back and was clear in how he graded things. I always knew what the expectations were for papers in particular.

He was incredibly responsive to questions especially over email. Sometimes there would be confusion when explaining something in class, but that was because he was doing it on the fly and there were a lot of confusing tables. Prof Tan was always willing to find time if I needed help.

The professor cultivated an excellent learning environment. He was very receptive to feedback and looked to engage learning and intellectual development through discussion and asking good questions to his students, never making them feel dumb for asking a question.

Attended every class I could, participated regularly, and had a strong prior interest in economics and econometrics.

Overall, very great feedback on all assignments -- including written work and empirical assignments. Sometimes feedback was a bit slower than I imagine he would have liked, but it was never really too slow for me.

The instructor was very clear in their communication. They were extremely responsive to questions and comments, always having a great answer to students comments, and had a lot of office hours.

Overall the course is high quality. The course exposed me to new econometric techniques (like Regression Discontinuity and Shift-share instruments), while also reinforcing old techniques DiD and (more standard) IVs that I have learned in the past. I then got to see how these techniques are exploited in papers that look at pretty important labor outcomes. A lot of papers also had a cool historical angle too, so I feel like my knowledge expanded in terms of econometric techniques and also my ability to talk about those techniques and understand how they are applied in a real-world setting by economists.

Overall, this instructor is arguably the most effective one I have had at Hamilton. He is really great at having students think critically about pretty complex econ papers.
