Local Ownership & ControlVermont First = Produced or manufactured in VT or within 30 miles of VT borderSodexoSodexo staff gather reports from everyone they buy from (farms, distributors, etc) to track $ spent at the account and statewide levels.It's an easy indicator to track because state boundaries are already well-defined and state regulations concerning food are all standardized. It's also a good branding technique for the state of Vermont as a whole. It may artifically exclude nearby producers (e.g. New Hampshire or Canada), but the 30 mile extension attempts to resolve this.

Farm to Fork vendor = Within 150 miles; owner operated; AND under $5 million in revenueBon AppetitBon Appetit enrolls each qualifying vendor in Farm to Fork program. Tracking is done through accounting systems, goal is 20% of purchases from Farm to Fork vendors. It recognizes ownership of the food operation (vs. contracting from multinationals like Tyson, for example). The 150 mile boundary is flexbile around state and international borders, but may arbitrarily exclude valuable producers beyond that distance.
